How much cap space do we have now?

We were at 50.5M after Collins restructured.

Trent's extension has a 17.855M 2024 cap hit. His previous cap hit was 10.757M (Reserve/DNR doesn't count his 2024 new allocations). So, 7.098M in additional cap will be allocated this year.

Deebo's restructure frees up 16.47M in space.

That would have us at 59.872M (50.5 - 7.098 + 16.47). Spotrac still shows Trent's old contract with the 31.5M cap hit.

I don't think this changes anything with a possible deebo move, but maybe makes it more likely to be a 6/1 cut as opposed to a pre 6/1 trade?

Seems like it's more likely he gets extended than cut/traded.

Before, any pre-June 2nd move would have a dead money cap hit of 15.143M, saving the 49ers 9.058M in cap space. After June 1st, they would have a 6.65M dead money cap hit in 2025, saving the 49ers 17.551M in cap space. They would have a 8.5M dead money cap hit in 2026.

Now, any pre-June 2nd move is going to have a dead money cap hit of 31.62M, consuming an additional 3.3M in cap space. After June 1st, they would have a 10.77M dead money cap hit in 2025, saving the 49ers 17.551M in cap space. They would have a 20.851M dead money cap hit in 2026.

When they love a specific player, they tend to be loyal. If Jimmie Ward had been happy playing for the 49ers, he'd probably still be a 49er. But he didn't like how he was being used by Kyle after losing his starting safety job. He went to Houston and Ryans said he was there to play safety.

I get that but it still doesn't seem wise.

Deebo is more of a gadget player that doesn't create much separation as a WR so he's not even a decent WR2 imo.

His role is more of a slot/WR3 guy who'll also get touches in the run game.

That type of player won't age well and he's already had problems being nicked up during the season.

Pearsall & Cowing will really have to make strides in Year 2 for this line of thinking to work imo.

Not to mention that that money should probably be used to bolster the O-Line so we're able to keep Purdy upright or resigning DMO.

And Deebo's the best in the business at that role. Maybe the best that's ever been. He's an all time great in terms of YAC over expected, for instance. If you want to turn some of the least valuable WR touches in the game - screens and constraint play runs - into weirdly incredibly valuable touches, Deebo's just about one of one. But it's a limited role. Then you add in that he's also a running back in terms of the physicality required to be that good at the role (leading to a high likelihood of earlier physical decline) and in terms of injury history. Then you add in that Deebo runs very hot and cold in his own conditioning. And you have a fascinating player who has skills that are high enough level for you to build an offense around, but doesn't really come with the consistency that you'd need to pay him like a centerpiece player. And you end up with a guy that's better as a training wheel player for quarterbacks that can't handle making the throws that are inherently higher value targets. I think Deebo's the exact sort of guy you should pair with your rookie quarterback to ease him into the league or with your aging veteran to turn their cheap dump-offs into more explosive plays. And he's exactly the sort of guy that you shouldn't pay if you're willing to give your quarterback a big contract. Because then the QB can unlock explosive plays on his own.

So... about that Deebo contract... I don't know if OverTheCap has some insider info or they messed up, but they are showing a restructure on next year as well. Converting 15.494M of salary to bonus reduces his cap hit from 24.2M to 16M in 2025.
