New Orleans

We come into this season full of motivation after an overtime defeat in the bizzbowl, with the hopes of going one step better. We'll be up for a match against a division of rival of ours and look to get this redemption season on the right track early.

Offense:

75% - 3 WR 1 TE 1 RB
10% - 4 WR 1 RB
10% - 1 WR 1 TE 2 RB
5% - 2 WR 2RB

Ball Control Offense: We’ve reworked our offense in the offseason and are continuing our transition towards an offense which is based on moving the ball down the field steadily and avoiding turnovers. We’re looking to have as many as 40-50% of our plays as runs, between Allen, Jacobs and Henry. While Jacobs will see the majority of snaps, we’ll see Henry closer to the goal line and getting almost as many touches as Jacobs does.
Moore will be our number 1 and given the full route tree, while Rice will work out of the slot primarily with the aim of being our YAC guy and finding soft spots in the zone when Raleigh line up that way. We’ll frequently use rub routes in man coverage with Rice and Moore lining up alongside each other, with the idea that if we can execute one effectively and get one of them free, there should be plenty of ground to gain as Thomas or Williams stretches the defense deep.

Passing out of the backfield: While Jacobs excels at all facets of being a running back, the decisive edge he holds over Henry is as a receiver so as part of this ball control oriented offense, our plan is to get Jacobs the ball in the passing game as many as 5 or 6 times and letting him work in an open field against much smaller men in the secondary.

Thomas Jr. and Williams as deep threats: These two will rotate with the key objective being to get down field and stretch the defense. If they open the field up for Moore and Rice underneath, they’ll have done a successful job but on a few occasions we’ll have Allen toss it down field to them if they get single coverage deep. We’re comfortable in their ability to win jump balls, or in Thomas’ case to get by the defense and hit either a huge gain or score a TD.

Defense:

Take-away the deep ball: Stafford’s success is very much based on being able to stretch the field and hit those big plays. We want to take that away primarily. We’ll do that by having Julian Love playing as our primary deep safety, with James being given more of a roaming role, but with a focus on also playing somewhat deeper and to help limit the intermediate passing game.

Sporadic Blitzing: We’re going to be more aggressive than normal and throw a bunch of blitzes in to mix-up Stafford’s rhythm and not let him get that clean pocket from which he needs at this age given his injury history and declining mobility. We’re going to do this with 3 of the most experienced players in our defense, being James, Davis and Mosley

Heavy DL Rotation: While our DL this season may not have the same star power that it has had in years gone by, it is deeper than it’s ever been. Given the threat that an offense featuring McCaffrey can pose in the running game, it will be necessary to ensure our guys on the DL are as fresh as possible. Therefore we’ll see our players rotating with the aim that no one on the DL plays any more than 70% of the snaps.

Setting the edge: On early downs, we’re going heavy on the DL with Smith and Armstead on the edge and specifically, to have them set the edge and force McCaffrey back on the inside. We feel our interior duo of Simmons and Hargrave is as good as any you’ll find in the BDL and our LB duo of Davis and Mosley, along with James just behind them, gives us immense confidence that we can stop any running game as long as we can keep it between the tackles.

Coverage:
Primarily cover 1 man, with a bit of cover 2 man as the situation requires.

Love will be our deep safety, James will operate at the intermediate level, being given the choice to either stay there or drop back depending on what our pre-snap read of the offense is. In terms of man assignments, we’ll go with:

Harrison Jr. - Taylor-Britt
Sutton - Douglas
Jeudy/Mooney - Lenoir
Davis - McCaffrey
Mosley - Andrews/Knox

Raleigh

OFFENSE

Base formation: 3WR, 1RB, 1 TE

Run/Pass Ratio: 40 run 60% pass

3rd and Long formation and substitutions:

11 formation won’t change but Andrews and McCaffrey can be split out to give more options in the passing game. Mooney will sub in often for Jeudy or Sutton in this scenario to get a deep threat. One of my favorite things to do in this situation will be to send my WR’s on deep routes and the hit McCaffrey on and angle route and give him space to run

Short Yardage Formation and substitutions:

Dawson Knox subs in for Jerry Jeudy for extra run blocking or for a bigger body in the pass game.

Redzone Formation and Substitutions:

The 11 formation structure will stay the same with 2 variations.

Mark Andrews as the slot WR and Dawson Knox in at TE to open up the run game and take advantage of smaller CB’s.

McCaffrey as the slot WR and Zack Moss in at RB to lighten the box and run Moss. I would use that to set up a McCaffrey jet sweep in a key moment

Offensive Focus Players: Christian McCaffrey, Marvin Harrison Jr, Mark Andrews

Run Game Philosophy: stretch the edges. NOLA has a great interior players and thumpers at LB. I want those old LB’s running towards the sidelines and force their edge defenders to contain MCCaffrey in the run game instead of being pass rush focused.

Pass Game Philosophy:

Pass early to set up the run later. Force NOLA to respect the WR abilities of McCaffeey and Andrews and keep their weaker CB’s on the field to try and cover. Put the game early in Stafford’s hands with drags, mid field in breakers and slants, to get McCaffrey, Andrews and Harrison on the move with the ball in their hand. Short passes on time to mitigate pass rush and let my weapons make plays.

Additional Information:

The Red Zone Fields package: maybe 2-3 in the game bringing in Fields instead of a WR or TE to do a Wild Cat formation, likely this will result in a McCaffrey run or a fake end around Fields draw up the middle

DEFENSE:

Base formation and coverage: 4-2-5 with 3 safeties: Budda Baker, Reid or Blakenship can rotate down as a LB/S hybrid to support the run but give me more coverage flexibility.

If NOLA opts to for a more spread out game plan, Blankenship will be subbed out for Wiggins to adapt

Pressure Rate: Moderate pressure. EDGE’s rush to contain the edge. Push the pocket from the middle with DT’s. Blitz 3rd safety

3rd and Long formation and substitutions:

Turner replaces McNeill and Wiggins subs in for Blankenship, Marcus Jones subs in for Campbell

Short Yardage Formation and substitutions:4-3 with Walker subbing in for Blankenship

Redzone Formation and Substitutions:

In the lower red zone Walker subs in for Blankenship to stop the run

Focus Players to Stop: Josh Allen, Derrick Henry DJ Moore

Run Game Philosophy: contain the edges and force runs to the inside into the strength of my defense. Baker and Reid rotating presnap so one comes down low to keep a spy of Josh Allen

Pass Game Philosophy:

Cover 1. Mix of Robber and 2 high. Cover 4 press bail mixed in as well. Be physical with receivers.

Kendall Fuller covers DJ Moore

Taron Johnson covers Rashee Rice

Nate Wiggins covers Brian Thomas Jr (or 3rd WR)

Box safety can cover TE/RB

Additional Information:

Josh Sweat creates a heavy 3 man EDGE rotation to keep rushers fresh as does Kobie Turner and BJ Hill to make for a 4 man DT rotation. Turner and Carter are in on obvious pass rush downs

How did we find stats for a player who hasn’t played yet? If he does this tonight I am burning you as a witch

I guess I jumped the gun here, plus side it doesn't change the final result of the game.

Going NOLA in this one…

While I didn’t think Jacobs or Henry were anything special this week the running ability of Josh Allen opens up the attack a whole lot more. Even with a spy his size difference over Reid and especially Baker can allow for punishing runs and falling forward for yards. The plan to use the receivers is appropriate based on their abilities and the rub routes should help Rice with some YAC opportunities which he is showing he excels. BTJ is a great deep threat decoy who can take one the distance of targeted. On the other end losing McCaffrey hurts. While Mason had a great game for SF he still is RB2 here as Moss is listed ahead on the bench and he is the only back other than McCaffrey mentioned in the gameplan. I think the weapons for Raleigh have more success with Stafford than they did irl but I think it just isn’t enough without the bellcow. McCaffrey would have had a field day with Davis covering him in man but unfortunately he didn’t play. I think Raleigh puts up a good fight and the pieces are there to be much better this year if guys develop and they stay healthy but they drop this week 1 matchup against the currently better team.
