PLAYOFF SCENARIOS FOR WEEK 16 BELOW: The playoff scenario is incredibly complex going into Week 16... perhaps more so than any other NSFL season thus far. Here is the scenarios I see (not taking into consideration ties). Note that I did these by hand, I could be wrong if I overlooked something... The Salsa conference in particular is VERY tricky. South Africa: - Clinches 1st seed with win vs Seattle and Kansas City win vs Chicago Baltimore: - Clinches playoffs with win vs Rio de Janeiro - Clinches playoffs with Tacoma win over Melbourne - Clinches 3rd seed with win vs Rio de Janeiro and Melbourne win vs Tacoma - Note: Even losing to Rio de Janeiro results in Baltimore finishing 2nd in the division due to conference record. Thus, Rio de Janeiro is eliminated. Chicago: - Clinches 1st seed with win vs KansasC ity. - Clinches 1st seed with Seattle win vs South Africa Tacoma: - Clinches 3rd seed with win vs Melbourne - Clinches playoffs with Rio de Janeiro win vs Baltimore Melbourne: - Clinches playoffs with win vs Tacoma - Clinches 3rd seed with win vs Tacoma and Rio de Janeiro win vs Baltimore Things in the Salsa conference is a bit more complicated so I simplified the situations a bit: Iowa: - Clinches playoffs with win vs Miami - Clinches playoffs with Rhode Island win vs Egypt - Clinches 3rd seed with win vs Miami and 2nd place in Yellow division is Egypt or Indianapolis Indianapolis: - Clinches 2nd seed with win vs Phoenix - Clinches playoffs with Rhode Island win vs Egypt - Clinches playoffs with Miami win vs Iowa - Clinches playoffs with Southview win vs Motor City - Only fails to make playoffs if loses vs Phoenix, Egypt wins vs Rhode Island, Motor City wins vs Southview, and Iowa wins vs Miami Motor City: - Clinches 2nd seed with win vs Southview and Phoenix win vs Indianapolis - Clinches 3rd seed with win vs Southview - Clinches 3rd seed with Miami win vs Iowa and Rhode Island win vs Egypt - Clinches playoffs with Rhode Island win vs Egypt - Clinches playoffs with Miami win vs Iowa - Fails to make playoffs if Iowa wins and they finish 3rd in the division, which occurs if they lose to Southview and Egypt defeats Rhode Island. Egypt: - Clinches 2nd seed with win vs Rhode Island and Southview win vs Motor City and Phoenix win vs Indianapolis - Clinches playoffs with win vs Rhode Island and Southview win vs Motor City - Clinches playoffs with win vs Rhode Island and Phoenix win vs Indianapolis - Clinches playoffs with win vs Rhode Island and Miami win vs Iowa - Eliminated from playoffs if they lose, would have tiebreaker over Indianapolis or Motor City if they win and one of those two lose. In this case, despite Iowa having the tiebreaker over them, they are guarenteed the 4th spot in the playoffs. These situations for Salsa look werid for a number of reasons: - Egypt has the tiebreaker over Motor City and Indianapolis if they finish with the same record as one or both. - Iowa has the tiebreaker over Egypt and Indianapolis, but Motor City has the tiebreaker over Iowa. - Motor City is in a weird situation that if it loses, it can't really make use of its tiebreaker vs Iowa because both Egypt and Indianapolis hold tiebreakers over them. Thus, Iowa would get in over one of their division rivals as the 3rd seed and Motor City would fail to qualify due to their failed tiebreaker over them. The only situation Motor City's tiebreaker over Iowa is relevant is if Egypt loses. - The bottom line is that Iowa, Motor City, and Indianapolis all control their own destiny, while Egypt needs someone to lose. Motor City's playoff position is far more vulnerable than Indianapolis' in the event of a loss. - Miami cannot finish over Iowa in the Green division and is thus eliminated even if they defeat Iowa in the final game. This tiebreaker would come down to conference record, which Iowa would still win. One remaining observation: - While parity was strong this year, there is a disparity between the Cheesy and Salsa conferences.
