NFL news is clearly grasping for stories. I agree it is a dumb article. Not sure why someone would post that on a professional news site. That's something that belongs on a blog or forum

PossibleCabbage
I thought the "massively expand the NFL" thought experiment was a fun one, but it didn't tackle the basic problem with the idea- diluting the talent pool. One of the reasons international soccer can support a massive number of elite teams is that basically the entire world plays futbol and you can find talent anywhere. While the NFL is better at finding like "big athletic guys from Africa and Oceania" than it was 20-30 years ago, it doesn't have the same untapped pool of talent. One thing is the number of players on the team. Like there are 15 players on an NBA team, 25 players on an EPL team, but 53 players on an NFL team. But like it wouldn't be weird to see the NFL go to 40 teams, 2 conferences with 20 and then either 4 divisions with 5 teams or 5 divisions with 4 teams. I think that could work. It would be interesting to see whether the shortage of NFL quality QBs is more about "there aren't enough people on the planet who can play QB at a high level" or more about "NFL teams don't develop QB prospects correctly." Like it doesn't seem implausible that Jordan Love could have been already out of the league had a team pressed him into starting Week 1 of his rookie year, but now he's in line to get a top of the market QB deal. Love got development time because GB had a quality starting QB. That shortage of quality QB means some QB get pressed into starting too soon stunting their development. NFL owners and GM/ HC have short timelines for said QB development. Missing on that cheap rookie contract window may drive some of that. There is also a lack of development at the college level.

You could hypothetically fix this with a real minor league. Like colleges aren't interested in developing players to be good at NFL football, they're interested in developing them to be good at College Football because they want to win College Football games. Sometimes you do that with like the triple option or a catch-rock-and-throw based offense. A lot of things work in college football (a lot of misdirection stuff) that simply won't work in NFL football, and it's not a College coach's job to tell the difference between those things. Still the lack of QB development is an issue that is more than just NFL teams.

I think this is a more likely outcome anyway. There needs to be an NBA G League type of situation for the NFL. There are still only a small number of kids actually benefitting from the NIL money. A twelve or sixteen team minor league would be great. Just like in baseball and basketball, there would still be a place for college football.
