Interesting thing with Apke is that he doesn’t seem like a very good tackler, which is a little disappointing for a guy with his size and speed and explosiveness. Expected him to be laying the wood, and that’s not really the case.

He’s going to be one heck of a ST player at the very least though.

Yeah, he looks pretty weak in his highlight tape. His “highlight” tape was pretty weak all around in my opinion. This is definitely a project and if he can’t tackle, he won’t last long in the league. Hopefully this is something he can develop. We’ll see.

Hmm, the wide differing of opinions on this selection reminds me of last year when we took Nicholson in round 4. I hope he proves the doubters wrong. I like it, and his upside, just like I liked Nicholson and his upside last year. I will say this though, I had wished with each guy that we could’ve gotten them a round Or 2 later, but that’s all a guess, there’s no guarantee that ever happens no matter what mock drafters predict. I don’t think anyone is saying a year later what they said about Nicholson last year on draft day and they’re elated with that selection except Dashing who for some reason doesn’t like Nicholson. Apke could be a steal with some more development, he made big plays in the Ohio State game last year.

Apke's the first pick that I'm a bit hesitant about. Not that he might work (though he's a gamble), but I think that if you were not going to pick for another 55 picks, you would want to address the major hole in the offensive line.

I would argue that they should try trade up in the 5th, but they don't have much firepower in this draft and I'm not sure they should give up stuff from 2019.

Giants having a hell of a draft

Every year the Giants aren’t afraid to load up on defensive line and for that reason they are always stout and deep there. I feel like the Redskins are like “Well, we took Payne so we’re all set there”. I wish they would keep going at the line. Pick up Settle or Hurst or someone before this draft is over.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison at all. Apke is a more fluid athlete than Archuleta. He’s converted WR, he has better hands and coverage ability as just a one year player at safety than Archuleta ever showed in his 5 year or so career. Archuleta was only an in the box safety and should’ve played Will LB and would have in today’s NFL. Apke can do that and more. He’s showed deep coverage ability, slot ability as well as being able to make plays around the line of scrimmage.

You’re comfortable with a Harrison Smith comp, but comparing the tight-hipped workout warrior S with a limited history in the secondary to Adam Archuleta is a problem?

Having watched him a bit more though, I do agree that it’s not a great comp. Apke isn’t physical enough to routinely play in the box like Archuleta, and while I like him going downhill, I think he needs to be kept clean and given a little space to make his speed a factor. Definitely a better option than Archuleta in terms of the deep range, but his angles and ball skills moving backward and laterally need a lot of work. Better at moving forward and making plays right now.

As a side note, I know everyone thinks “Adam Archuleta” is an insult — but I don’t mean it as one. This kid would kill to have Archuleta’s career. But you’re right that this kid isn’t Archuleta. His game is actually more like TJ Green — which is probably not a great sign for him (or us)
