Predict the Final 53-man Roster

Obviously it's a bit early for this, but I have work to procrastinate, so here goes.  These first predictions will obviously be wrong, but this thread can serve as one place for discussion on roster construction and developments moving forward.  There are 53 spots.  You guys know the drill.

Projected week 1 starters are in bold.
Rookies are in italics.

Offense (24)

QB: Flacco, Griffin, Jackson (3)
RB: Collins, Dickson, Allen (3)
WR: Crabtree, Brown, Snead, Moore, Scott, Lasley (6)
TE: Hurst, Williams, Andrews, Boyle (4)
OL: Stanley, Hurst, Siragusa, Yanda, Lewis, Brown, Eluemunor, Skura (8)

Defense (26)

DL: Williams, Pierce, Urban, Davis, Wormley, Kaufusi, Henry, Ricard (8)
EDGE: Suggs, Judon, Z. Smith, Bowser, Williams (5)
LB: Moseley, Onwuasor, Correa, Young (4)
CB: J. Smith, Carr, Humphrey, Young, Canady, Averett (6)
S: Weddle, Jefferson, Levine (3)

Special Teams (3)

K: Tucker
P: Koch
LS: Cox

Practice Squad (11) - I cheated a little here, it's one too many

Waller, WR/TE
Zach Sieler, DL
Jaylen Hill, CB
Darious Williams, CB
Chuck Clark, DB
DeShon Elliott, DB
De'Lance Turner, RB
Greg Senat, OT
Bradley Bozeman, C
Janarion Grant, WR
Christian LaCouture, DL

Notable Cuts/Trades

Perriman - If all six guys above make the team, he's the odd man out.  Maybe dealt for a conditional or fringe player from somewhere. Ultimately, I think an injury or an "injury" to one of the rookies keeps him around.  I think the team wants to see if he can possibly do something with all of his physical tools.  Assuming health and no moves, he's gone, though.

McClellan - I know the staff likes him, but I don't know how they can afford to keep him at this point (specifically with a roster spot).  He's probably the first guy who makes the roster if there is an injury pretty much anywhere in the EDGE or LB spots.

Man it's really tight. I think you have the right base 53. But, it just can't be locked in like that (even before injuries), since a couple of the guys outside will earn a spot, plus an UDFA we haven't heard of. I'll just predict the guys on your 53 who I think WON'T make the initial 53 in rough order of confidence of who is outside and pick some replacements.

1. Buck Allen - Replacement level RB with no upside. Can't run for more than he's blocked for. Can catch the ball, but doesn't do a ton after. I predict an UDFA RB with more juice will make the team. I'll fill in a name later once I watch them.

2. RG3 - I get why he makes sense to keep in camp and the idea of him mentoring LJ8 is nice. But, the key is how likely are we to lose a guy if we release him. We can call RG3 back anytime. No need to keep him on the roster for the initial 53, before injuries, when the roster is at it's tightest. Instead they keep Breshad Perriman, to take one last shot at the craps table. He looks good in minicamp/practice like he usually does and it ends up being too hard for them to walk away.

3. Siragusa to PUP to start the season - lets us keep an extra lineman like Bozeman. Easy way to keep more guys.

4. Brandon Carr TRADED - keep a young guy instead. With our injury luck with CBs we probably won't need to, but since I'm not predicting injuries, this gives us room to keep a young DB. I want to say Hill

5. Kaufusi cut for Zach Sieler - another equally injury-prone Brent Urban on the roster? Nah, one is enough. Having a more durable player makes it easier for me to take a roster spot from the D-line...

6. Carl Davis cut - I need to cut someone because DeShon Elliot is making this team. We need another safety for the defense and we need one for special teams too. The kick return units are going to get smaller with the new rules. Chuck Clark is also a strong option for the same reasons, but I'm going with the rookie.

I would consider Eluemanor a likely candidate to the PS and Bozeman elevated to the roster. Vince Mayle at tight end would be very likely in case of injury one of the other tight ends, he really stood out on special teams last year.

Ricard should just take on the full role as a fullback and special teamer.

Kaufusi I think is gone. He got some real bad reactions from the coaching staff, so something must be off.

Elliot has to make the team. Either Carl Davis or Michael Pierce could garner trade considerations.

Chuck Clark has to get onto the roster. Outstanding on special teams and he fared much much better when he saw the field than I anticipated. The little I saw from him in college, he was excellent when the play was in front of him and a really good tackler, but playing in space covering tight ends, runningbacks and wide receivers - then it was really bad.

Agreed on this point certainly.

Also, some of these logjams will be taken care of naturally through injury.

On the RG3 point, I more so was thinking of having him as the actual backup so that LJ can take a true redshirt year (rather than direct mentorship).  That's a good point about him just being a phone call away, though.  It's not like he was in huge demand from other squads before we signed him.

I believe we actually get 11 spots as long as the German Football player is one of them (Chris Ezeala)

Cant promote him to the 53 man during the season tho.

Well, he's not one of the ones I listed, so I still cheated.

Offense (24)

QB: Flacco, Griffin, Jackson (3)
RB: Collins, Dixon, Allen (3)
WR: Crabtree, Moore, Snead, Lasley, Scott (5)
TE: Hurst, Williams, Andrews, Mayle (4)
OL: Stanley, Hurst, Lewis, Yanda, Brown, Siragusa, Eluemunor, Skura (8)

Quick Notes:

*The best five on our OL are the ones in bold. No way I don’t see this crew starting. Of this crew the most logical lineup is to have Lewis at center. He’s got enough life experience and practice experience the past few years that I see him beating out Skura. In terms of the backups, it’s a good mix of talent and versatility.

* I expect one of the tight ends to go down with an injury. Bad luck hit Williams last season, we’ll see how he bounces back, either way I see four on the roster.

* We have so many new FA faces and new draft picks and new QBs that I can’t see an undrafted option stealing enough opportunities to shine at WR. Also with the kickoff being slowly phased out, we should have enough return ability with Moore to be solid. One of our depth RBs (Dixon/Allen) or depth WRs (Snead/Lasley) should be able to show something on kickoffs enough to go with them.

* Can’t see our RBs not making it. Allen is our most reliable back, Dixon our most versatile back, and Collins our most exciting back. None of them are true game breakers but none of them are bad enough that we need to rely on an unproven rookie to tote the rock.

* I’ve seen the argument made that we can always resign RG3 whenever we want. But I’d MUCH rather start an average return man than to start a WR at the QB position. It was one thing to go with two QBs when Flacco was impregnable in regards to durability, but that has not been the case as of late. Jackson is a running QB, I don’t expect durability to be a concern, but what if he’s concussed in a game? No way we win a football game with Chris Moore at QB... but we can win games with Chris Moore as our return specialist. I’ll “roll the dice” on RG3 as the backup and hope we never need him, then to need him and wish he hadn’t signed with that one team that saw him do pretty good in a preseason game.

Defense (26)

DL: Williams, Pierce, Urban, Davis, Wormley, Henry, Ricard (7)
EDGE: Suggs, Judon, Bowser, Z. Smith, Williams (5)
LB: Mosley, Bradley, Young, Onwuasor (4)
CB: J. Smith, Humphrey, Young, Carr, Canady, Averett (6)
S: Weddle, Jefferson, Levine, Clark (4)

Quick notes:

*No way Humphrey is benched again for Carr. He’s a second year player that proved himself in game experience. Carr will start if Smith isn’t healthy, but Smith will get the star veteran favorability.

* Bam Bradley might look like a surprise, but he was making plays last training camp before tearing his ACL. We usually have our UDFA LBers sit before they compete for the starting spot. Peanut didn’t do a good enough job and thus others will be given a shot. I expect Peanut to stay relevant enough to make the team, but Bradley has a better size profile to handle NFL size blockers and the 4.5 speed athleticism to still make plays.

* Should be a good battle between Bowser and Judon. Judon has the definite advantage to start, but I can see Bowser being the 6th man (basketball reference) with regard to Suggs/Judon. Filling in for both roles. Too talented to not get him on the field.

Special Teams (3)

K: Tucker
P: Koch
LS: Cox

Injured Reserve

Nick Boyle

John Brown, WR

“Deshone Elliot, SS”

“Zach Sieler, DL”

* the italics denotes the good ole “redshirt IR” designation, where you don’t want to risk putting them on the practice squad to get plucked. Elliot is too good and Sieler was Ozzie’s last pick, can’t see them giving another team a shot at him this soon.

Practice Squad (11)

  • Greg Senat, OL
  • Darious Williams, CB
  • Bradley Bozeman, C
  • Tim White, WR/RS
  • Alvin Jones, ILB
  • De'Lance Turner, RB
  • Jaylen Hill, CB
  • Janarion Grant, WR/RS
  • Christian LaCouture, DL
  • Gus Edwards, RB
  • Chris Ezelea, FB (Germany)

Notable Cuts/Trades

Breshad Perriman- We all know the story. He’s mentally weak, he has talent and athleticism, and I thought he had a shot; but Lasley is a true competitor and will soon be a coaches favorite. Scott is similarly gifted as Perriman but with better hands. No way he beats BOTH guys out of a spot.

Kamalei Correa- Getting beat out by Peanut last year regardless of what his “true” position is says a lot about his mental fortitude. His mother sending those tweets only further goes to show where Correa is mentally. He’s still focused on the position switch and not on what he can do to be the greatest asset to the team. Guys like Bam Bradley, Peanut, and Young won’t be focused on that. Getting rid of Perriman means the team is willing to clean house of players who think they’re above the team. They’ll get an example shown from both the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side of the ball.

Hey, I’m trying to be realistic. Someone has got to get hurt. I don’t know who, but we never make it through camp “lucky” and with no injuries.

I actually thought about throwing two more people on IR, but I didn’t want anyone to confuse me for GRRM or Thanos.?

This is from Lance Zierleins breakdown of Perriman. The negatives are scaringly accurate. Especially the part about giving up on routes which doesn't involve him as the primary target is exactly what I came away with when watching the Ravens in London.

Quote

Raw in his routes, relying on speed and athleticism over any precision. Rounds routes and is inconsistent at selling and finishing routes that don't involve him as primary target. Sits and waits on the throw rather than working back to it. Redirected in his routes more than expected for receiver his size. Disappointing hands that might always haunt him. Slow catch readiness, allowing too many throws to beat him up. Too much double catching and his focus drops over second half of the season were maddening to watch.

Honestly, I just don't think he is a talent which can be saved.

Is this a draft report or is he watching tape from this past season? Just curious.

No Brown actually means that you're only at 23 on offense (rather than 24, which you have listed):

3 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 8 = 23
