Redskins hire Brian Lafemina from NFL to lead business side

NFL officials say they expect the former league executive will play a role in planning for the Redskins next stadium.

The Washington Redskins hired Brian Lafemina as the teams’s president of business operations and chief operating officer in a newly created position.

Lafemina will head the business side of operations and report to team owner Daniel Snyder, the team announced. He worked for the NFL the last eight years and was directly involved in NFL-wide programs focused on fan experience, ticketing strategy, Super Bowl strategy, Pro Bowl strategy and stadium development.

Several people within the NFL said they expect Lafemina to become a central figure in the Redskins’ planning for their next stadium, a task that has been the primary responsibility of team president Bruce Allen.

“He’s very well thought-of in the league office and by the teams,” said one person familiar with the league’s inner workings. “He’s really data-driven. He sees things from the fans’ perspective.”

Lafemina has worked particularly closely with teams with overhauling and improving their ticket-selling operations, that person said.

“Brian has been one of the most highly regarded NFL executives amongst league ownership for many years because of his deep understanding of our business, his focus on partner relationships and his genuine belief that fans must be at the center of every decision we make,” Snyder said in a statement.

“Brian is coming to Washington with fresh thinking and big ideas to implement, and I have full confidence that with Brian’s addition and with Bruce Allen continuing as team president, the Redskins’ success will continue to grow, both on and off the field.”

Owner Daniel Snyder has added league office executive Brian LaFemina as COO and President of Business Operations. In that role, LaFemina will oversee all club business operations and report directly to Snyder.

“I am thrilled to welcome Brian to the Washington Redskins,” Snyder said in a team-issued statement. “Brian has been one of the most highly regarded NFL executives amongst league ownership for many years because of his deep understanding of our business, his focus on partner relationships and his genuine belief that fans must be at the center of every decision we make. Brian is coming to Washington with fresh thinking and big ideas to implement, and I have full confidence that with Brian’s addition and with Bruce Allen continuing as team President, the Redskins’ success will continue to grow, both on and off the field.”

LaFemina said in the same press release that Snyder approached LaFemina “about a year ago” to discuss the possibility of hiring him.

“Working with Dan and Bruce to develop a new, dynamic stadium that matches the vibrancy of this organization and its fan base will be an exciting challenge and one of our top priorities,” LaFemina said.

The fact that LaFemina will report directly to Snyder (and that the press release contains no quote from Allen) suggests that Allen at a minimum has been undermined by the move, and at most could be on the way out. Indeed, if Allen were getting done everything he needs to get done, as the president of the team, there would be no need to hire a President of Business Operations/COO who reports directly to Snyder.

The fact that the discussions with LaFemina began roughly a year ago hints that Snyder possibly began looking for someone to do many of the things Allen was doing at roughly the same time as Allen clumsily fired G.M. Scot McCloughan and took plenty of flak from fans and the media for chasing a successful football executive from the organization on dubious grounds, at best.

Multiple media outlets have expressed how well Brian Lafemina is respected amongst NFL circles. Above all else, everybody knows that you do not mess with Dan Snyder's money and this guy is experienced in all things ticket sales and stadiums. I think it is a great hire if he can make the game day experience at FedEx enjoyable and the overall business side of the operation competent. Maybe fix the PR situation and change perception of this organization. Or not and things will stay the same.

Not sure what this means, but the fact that the new guy directly reports to Snyder does not bode well for ole Bruce Bruce.

While disappointing, not surprising.

Yeah, this is actually the worse possible scenario. Bruce will have less to do with the business side and the new stadium and more control over football personnel.

Not at all. We all know that Dan doesn't really care about the personnel department....Bruce was integral to the new stadium initiative, so if he has effectively been replaced, than him bumbling and stumbling on the personnel side would get him axed quicker than him being tied to the new stadium initiative (The lease on Fedex is up in 2027).

I highly doubt Dan Snyder wants to pay ANOTHER high level executive big money...there has been multiple reports of him being mad at all the PR disasters under Bruce.
