He'd be, and I'm not exaggerating when I say this, the worst GM hire in the past decade.

He's being brought in so Fred and Jeff have a name to bounce off. He's not running the show, Fred hates analytics so nobody else had a reasonable opportunity, but Melvin's actual power will not be as encompassing as people think.

He offers absolutely nothing in terms of modern player evaluation, and he's going to be the highest ranking baseball mind in the organization.

That's pretty much how the team is run now. Fred Wilpon thinks it's still the 90's. That's why Melvin is getting the job in the first place.

I also don't get how the internet is okay with Peter Angelos on this. Apparently he's a labor lawyer, and he thinks the practice is unfair, so he just opts out and that's supposed to be okay?

Teams only have $155MM or so to spend on LA players total. If Angelos opts out and chooses to ignore it, there goes 3% of the total pool. It'd be like saying because you're opposed to minimum wage, you just won't have anyone work in your fast food place, while homeless people sit outside. Yeah minimum wage sucks, but not as bad a $0.

Angelos isn't just a labor lawyer, he's one of the best lawyers in recent memory across a couple different spectrums.  He's made a not so small fortune against Philip Morris, asbestos cases and numerous others, and his views have often collided with MLB.  He was one of three dissenters to the salary cap during the 1994 strike, he refused to use replacement players if the strike continued into 1995, and as such, MLB has refused to involve him in their labor negotiations despite his vast experience.

Angelos has a couple dissenting ideas on the international market.  First, he refused to sign Cuban defectors, as he negotiated a two game exhibition series in 1998 with the Cuban national team and the Orioles (one game in Cuba, one game in Baltimore) due to not wanting to draw the ire of the Cuban government.  Second, he does not believe in the posting system, but will allow a player to sign a contract with the Orioles internationally.  We have signed a couple players from Japan and Korea over the years, including Wei-Yin Chen, Koji Uehara and Hyun Soo Kim.  The Orioles have also used international signings in the past, but usually are very limited.  The biggest names they've signed are Jonathan Schoop and Jomar Reyes.

When Dan Duquette came to the Orioles, he talked about wanting to go into the international market, and one of the front office signings he was allowed to make was Fred Ferreira, one of the most renowned persons in the international scouting and relationship community.  However, the people above Duquette never let him go that direction, and the hiring of Ferreira was largely wasted, and he was limited to overseas scouting in Korea, Japan and Australia.  His contract wasn't retained, and he's gone, along with Duquette and the others.

This is why I am doubting the Orioles commitment to the international market.  We had the guy in place to make it happen, and we didn't let him and Duquette get to work.  Now we are expected to believe it's going to be a big focus?  It is no surprise that the Mesa's went to the Marlins, despite the Orioles having more money.  They can offer a better environment that feels closer to home, they have new ownership in play with a long-term plan and had Derek Jeter selling it to them.   Gaston, meanwhile, goes to the Rays for less money than the Orioles had available to spend, and of course, he goes to a system in Tampa Bay where they excel at player development and have a young team coming off 90 wins.  Also, both teams have already established inroads and relationships in the international scouting community.  The Orioles havent had much, if any, exposure there, so they were behind everything there too.

What is most troubling is a report from one of our local beat writers that said our acting GM actually got outbid for both Victor Victor Mesa and Gaston.  Meaning, we had the most money to work with, and didn't offer either one the full amount.  So, on top of not being the best fits, we also didn't lead with the most money.  Add onto that the complete lack of information coming about anything, and it really, really sucks to be an Orioles fan.

Sounds like whoever is going to be the next EVP of Baseball Operations isn't going to have the carte-blanche ability that the Orioles are currently trying to sell to their fans.

The Mesa brothers are signing with the Marlins. So the Orioles are just kind of sitting on a pile of IFA money now?

Yes, with no one to spend it on now since most everyone is signed.  They traded for all of that money, then traded $750k of it for some dude in the Phillies organization who is struggling in the GULF COAST league, then proceeded to UNDERBID for VVM and Gaston, despite having more money than the Marlins and Rays did.

You have to assume that they sign the Cuban pitcher, Sandy Gaston, for at least 7 figures.  But unless there are some late popup players, it's looking like they will.

Gaston went to the Rays for $2.6 million, and the Orioles bid apparently came under that amount.
