Here is an opening day classic that no one seems to ever talk about. In 1981 the Chiefs led by Marv Levy traveled to Pittsburgh to take on Chuck Noll's Steelers. The Steelers were starting to fall off as the top dogs of the league, but still had high expectations heading into the season. The Chiefs were a fledgling franchise at this time, not having made the playoffs in 10 years.

This was a wild game that had many lead changes, and big plays off of turnovers, which there were also a lot of. Steelers alone lost the ball 7 times to the Chiefs 2 times, and it seems like it the Steelers could have done worse.

Bill Kenny had marginal success as a starter in the NFL, but on this day he went toe to toe with Terry Bradshaw in the air. Both had relatively good performances. A lot of downfield passes from both offenses at the time. Formations were limited of course. It is impressive how all of these guys were catching the ball with their bare hands. Gloves didn't become a staple for players until the mid to late eighties. All in all, worth a watch.

The first regular season game I ever watched.

Nice trip down memory lane regarding the 1981 San Diego Chargers. On a cold, muggy October afternoon in Baltimore, the 5-1 Chargers took on the 1-5 Colts in a week 7 showdown. Fouts and the Chargers offense basically owned the entire game. A lot of big plays made by Charlie Joiner, Chuck Munice, and Kellen Winslow on the way to a 43-14 blowout. This was Bert Jones' last season in Baltimore. The Colts were a mess at this point, and of course moved to Indianapolis 3 years later.

1985 Week 4. The Washington Redskins visit the Chicago Bears in a rematch of the previous season's NFC divisional playoff game. This was basically before the Bears had hit their stride of dominance, but they still crushed the Redskins 45-10. This was after initially spotting the Redskins 10 points. Bears then score 21 points in a flash by taking advantage of Redskins self-inflicted blunders, and getting a Willie Gault kickoff TD return. They don't look back at that point. Redskins fell to 1-3, but rebounded to 10-6. Due to a tiebreaker with the also 10-6 49ers though, they didn't make the playoffs. Bears of course went on to win the Super Bowl.

1983 Week 14. The 11-2 Dallas Cowboys traveled to Seattle to take on the 7-6 Seattle Seahawks. The final score of this game was 35-10 Dallas, but on rewatching highlights, the Seahawks had their chances in the first half to take control of the game. However key turnovers (two Curt Warner fumbles inside the redzone) just cut their ability to keep up with Dallas. Dave Kreig was sacked 8 times in this game. It was more of the Dallas pass rush that was relentless than Krieg holding on to the ball too long. Chuck Knox and his staff had him roll out more as the game wore on to try and stop the bleeding, but it was too late. Both Tony Dorsett and Danny White had huge days for the Cowboys. The game wasn't as bad as the scoreboard indicated at the end to me. Interesting side note is that **** Vermeil did color commentary for this game.

This was a 1995 week 3 MNF game between the Dolphins and Steelers in Miami. Mike Tomczak was starting at QB for Neil O'Donnell that night. Not sure, but probably due to injury. Unfortunately for the Steelers, he doesn't inspire confidence early as he throws two bad interceptions that lead to a quick 10-0 lead for the Dolphins. The Steelers all night shot themselves in the foot, and at the end of the half the Dolphins led 17-3 after three turnovers. All in all, The Steelers had 5 turnovers to the Dolphins 0. Marnio has a decent game, but is regulated to the sidelines late in the second half after he's popped good. Not serious, but Bernie Kosar finishes in his place. Jim Miller replaces Tomczak late in the game, and plays well leading the Steelers to a TD, but overall it's too late. Dolphins win 23-10.

1999 Week 11 St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers. This game as a 49ers fan sucked. Probably the same kind of game that is going to happen in a few days. Maybe worse. Earlier in week 5 of the season, the 49ers got blown out by the Rams in St. Louis 42-20. It was the first time the Rams had beaten the 49ers after 17 straight losses. In this second meeting the 49ers don't get beat as badly, and actually play well for the most part despite the final 23-7 score. Rams only score one offensive touchdown during the game. What killed the 49ers was mostly self inflicted damage. Terrell Owens catches a long pass early, but fumbles. Steve Stenstrom who was starting in place of the benched Jeff Garcia throws a pick six. 49ers end of up with 5 turonvers to the Rams 1. Credit where it's due, the Rams defense knuckles down all game long preventing anything other than a Fred Beasley touchdown in the first quarter. This game was huge for the Rams franchise, as it marked the first season since 1980 that they had swept their division rivals.

2000 Week 2 Jacksonville Jaguars at Baltimore Ravens. After being around 4 full seasons, the Ravens had never beaten the Jaguars. That changed in this game, which had one of the wildest 2nd halfs of football ever. The Jaguars surged to a 23-7 lead in the first half on the heels of two Jimmy Smith touchdown catches. Jimmy Smith would end the day with 15 catces for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns. Turnovers, and the Ravens offense ultimately did the Jaguars end as the contest progressed. Tony Banks found his groove late, and had a big afternoon. He threw two interceptions, but had 5 touchdowns including the game winning score to Shannon Sharpe down the seam. Jacksonville with less than 40 seconds remaining, and no timeouts couldn't muster another drive to get into field goal range. This was a huge comeback for the Ravens. Interestingly enough, Fred Taylor was out this game with injury, and replaced by Stacey Mack. Mack didn't produce much in terms of offense against the Ravens powerful defense, and had a key fumble which set up the Ravens perfectly in the redzone. Mark Brunell was probably the best passer the Ravens faced all season long until Gannon in the playoffs. Even though the AFC was weak on QB talent that year, the Ravens did prove they could hang when a quality passer came their way.

1990 Week 8 Cleveland Browns (2-5) at San Francisco 49ers (6-0).

This game was pretty interesting for a couple of reasons. The Browns were coming off a 9-6-1 season in 1989 where they made the AFC championship for the 3rd time in three years. Bud Carson was now in his second season as head coach. However, the Browns had started 2-5, starting QB Kosar was struggling, and the unit overall just wasn't playing well. A meeting with the 6-0 defending Super Bowl champions wasn't looking to help fix the issues. To their credit, Cleveland plays really well in the contest. In the first half they are the recipient of a couple of tough calls, but they hang in there. Kosar is benched at halftime for journeyman Mike Pagel. Overall the game is hard fought, and tied at 17-17 in the 4th quarter. Of course, Montana with under a minute left drives the 49ers into Browns territory (including converting a 3rd and 14 from the 49ers own 26), and Mike Coffer kicks the game winning field goal to make the score 20-17 49ers. The 49ers moved to 7-0, and Bud Carson last one more game (a 42-0 home loss against the Buffalo Bills), before Art Modell fires him.

Other aspects of this game include Steve Young lining up at receiver multiple times, Jerry Rice having a really good battle against Browns corner Frank Minnifield, and Bill Walsh doing color commentary with Charlie Jones.

1984 Week 5 Miami Dolphins (4-0) at St. Louis Cardinals (2-2).

This is a great example of Dan Marino at his finest. His dominant 1984 season was just getting started, and he's on fire the entire game here. Not only that, but his receivers Duper, and Clayton both have monster days making a couple of spectacular catches in the process. The Cardinals in 1984 were clearly a team on the rise, and ready to take the next step in 1985. It didn't happen, but they looked like the real deal in 1984. Neil Lomax and Stump Mitchell (in place of Ottis Anderson) try their best to keep pace with the Miami offense (since their own defense wasn't), but they ultimately couldn't keep pace. Exciting game to watch.

1992 Week 16 Dallas Cowboys (11-3) at Atlanta Falcons (6-8).

This is a game that Deion Sanders would probably like to forget. The magic from the 1991 Atlanta Falcons season vanished in 1992. At this point in the season their campaign was basically over, and the Cowboys were soaring trying to keep gain the top seed in the NFC. In this game, Atlanta gets an early 7-3 lead, but it's all downhill from there. The Cowboys would go on a roll ending the night with a 41-17 victory. The Falcons have 3 turnovers to the Cowboys' zero, while the triplets Aikman, Irvin, and Smith all have big days. Deion himself fumbles on a kickoff, lets Irvin have a huge night, and gives questionable effort on a tackle attempt which results in a big gain.

2004 Week 8 Atlanta Falcons (5-2) at Denver Broncos (5-2).

Good game. Jim Mora's Falcons head into Denver to take on Mike Shanahan's Broncos in a duel between two teams that would make the playoffs. Broncos strike early with two touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead, but the Falcons eventually roar back stacking up 31 unanswered points just after the start of the 4th quarter. Denver tries to make a game out of it late, but eventually falls 41-28. This was a huge game for Falcons QB Michael Vick. He accounted for 2 TDs passing, 252 yards, and had 115 yards rushing. All day Denver couldn't get to the elusive QB albeit once. Broncos QB Jake Plummer had a huge afternoon throwing for a career high 499 yards along with 4 TDs. However he also tossed 3 interceptions, which directly helped the Falcons build their lead. WR Rod Smith had 208 yards receiving, including an 80 yard TD bomb. Fun game.
