Oh I don’t feel attacked. I did nothing wrong and I know that. I like the risk of the whole RFA situation. That’s why I traded him to get more now than I would if someone offered him a contract I couldn’t match. That’s how I took on the situation. Or I could have kept him for the season let him leave and get a first, or matched a contract offer and have him locked up on my team, or no one offers and I can three up him the next season. All these options is what makes it exciting to me.

It makes more sense though now that I've been reminded that RFA contracts can be matched so really we only lose a player if we don't want to pay him

You can't three up a rookie deal.  It's ludicrous and I've tried to change it multiple times in owners meetings.  Your only hope is if the niners sign him to an extension before deadline(which is possible)  then you can three up based on that contract.

But the way the rules are written, even if hes signed to a new deal irl I wouldn't be able to 3 up him. Because he'd still be an RFA and not an UFA. And according to the rules as they're written only UFA can be 3 upped.

This is the point people are forgetting. He doesn't have to "give" anyone anything. He tenders the player,  another owner makes a  contract offer. He then can choose to match the deal or take the tendered pick. Pretty fair.

That's true. But instead of getting the 75% contract I was banking on I'm probably going to have to pay well over 100% of what his contract is going to be.

Then don’t trade more than a first for an upcoming RFA. That’s the risk you take. That’s a thing I really like about this league. The options and risks. If we start making it too easy to retain players then this becomes a pancake league. Let’s look at the flip side of this. I was in Rackcs position with him so that’s why I moved him. I was ahead of the curve. Got more than a first and now I can offer a crazy contract get him back give them back a first and have  those additional picks. I’m not going to offer him or Kupp though because I don’t want to. But I have every right to if I desired.

I'm not blaming you at all. I gave up what I gave up and it's on me for not interpreting the rules correctly. I'm mostly mad at myself for that and then the rules for being dumb in this situation. My only hope at securing a long term deal for any young player who is an RFA is to pay out the *** to match someone's contract.

I don’t think you’ll have to pay as much as you think.

Huh? Based on what? You have no idea the contracts that will be offered.

Second this.  You won't have to pay over 100%.

Just look at last year with Tyreek.  Pheltz offered him 17.5k and he'll probably get a contract in the 20 mil a year IRL range.  So while not 75%, it's still a discount.
