I’d still like them to pursue CJ Mosley or Jordan Hicks, for example, and that’s the top end of the ILB market. I just think the current safety market is such an aberration that they should make an exception to that rule, because teams are getting quality starters on affordable deals — which is extremely rare in FA. And the truth is, even without taking the Redskins’ horrific history with high priced FAs into account, the highest end of the FA market has been riddled with pricey misfires over the last few years. Look at last year’s biggest FA earners: disappointing QBs (Cousins, Keenum, Bradford), WR Sammy Watkins (KC), OT Nate Solder (NYG), CB Trumaine Robinson (NYJ), WR Allen Robinson (CHI), OG Andrew Norwell (JAX), CB Malcolm Butler (TEN), C Ryan Jensen (TB), DT Star Lotulelei (BUF), TE Jimmy Graham (GB). Pretty much a wasteland. I would imagine almost every one of those teams would like to get out of those deals if they could. The top end in 2017 was better, but there were still a lot of busts. And the vast majority of the top end deals in 2016, the teams have already dumped the player (Malik Jackson, Olivier Vernon, Russell Okung, Brock Osweiler, Kelechi Osemele, Damon Harrison, Sean Smith, Kevin Beachum, Bruce Irvin) or still may (Janoris Jenkins, Josh Norman). It’s easy to assume that because a player has been good, he’ll continue to be good.
