People don’t seem to get that $2 mil per year too much for an elite player isn’t as bad as paying a scrub $2 mil per year too much.

The guy we signed from Atlanta is terrible. Why are we even wasting our time with guys like that when you can find mid to late round picks to do the same thing.

Brycen Hopkins

Brycen Hopkins is almost assuredly not going to be an instant starter.

First of all, he can’t block, which will limit his ability to get on the field. Beyond that, he’s not a particularly polished receiver at this point (big drops issues), and TEs are slow-developing as a general rule. Only 5 rookie TEs in the last 20 years have caught 50 or more passes, and only 15 have caught even more than 40 passes.

Many much more talented TEs have come into the league over the past few seasons, and with the exception of Evan Engram, none of them have put up legit starting TE numbers. Maybe Kittle, who of course is an absolute All-Pro — he put up 43 catches for 515 yards. So if Hopkins is as good as George Kittle (who, incidentally, is also a top blocker), he might put up starting TE production for us.

Otherwise, it’ll be someone like Nick Vannett or Delanie Walker taking most of the snaps. And the team will pat themselves on the back for resisting the urge to pay Austin Hooper $11M to catch 70+ passes a year.

I have to admit, my mention of Hopkins to Lavar was more of a troll then being serious.

I’d take Nick Vanette and draft a TE in the mid rounds to develop. I’m not interested in Delanie Walker. He broke his ankle two years ago - missed almost the entire 2018 season - last year he only played 7 games bc of the ankle & he’s going to be 36.

So you can draft a different position like TE, WR, LB or DB.
