St. Louis Stallions - Expansion Mock (Starting in 2021)

Unfortunately, due to work obligations, I couldn't follow through on starting this mock in 2020. Therefore, I am starting it for the 2021 season. There are a few rules I am going to set. First, because Trevor Lawrence is such an easy slam dunk, I'm going to trade out of the first pick with whichever franchise gets him IRL (likely the Jets or the Jaguars). I'll obviously get a nice return for a talent like Lawrence, but it'll make it harder on me not having a slam dunk generational QB. (IRL, I'd obviously draft him, but that's just too easy.)

Second, with regard to FA, I can sign any player who is currently a FA or on a practice squad for the NFL minimum. If a team ends up offering more this off-season, I have the option to match it. When FA starts this off-season, I can sign a FA if I agree to outbid the team that signs him by 10% (because players generally don't want to play for expansion teams unless they're getting paid more). If a player resigns with his old team, I have to outbid by 25% to get him. The percentage is both APY and overall value.

Third, I will have an expansion draft during the playoffs or after the season. I'll likely just do it based on what players I think would most likely be in the Draft. In terms of the NFL Draft, I'll get the #1 pick in each round, the #17 pick in every round but the first, and the Mr. Irrelevant Pick (i.e., the Texans Rule). I will pick my coaching staff during the playoffs or after the season. Right now, I am leaning towards hiring Brandon Staley, the Rams DC. I have typically hired retreads in the past for their experience to start, but I think I'll likely go a different direction this time.

Now that the Jaguars have secured the #1 overall pick IRL, I'll make the hypothetical trade here. I think I could get more IRL because there would be a bidding war, but I want to be realistic (so I'll err on the side of reasonableness). This is the deal:

Stallions

#1 overall pick (Trevor Lawrence)

Jaguars

#2 overall pick

Rams 1st

Jaguars 2nd

Vikings 2nd (Yannick)

Jaguars 4th

Jaguars 5th

2022 2nd

2022 3rd

QB Gardner Minshew

I'm thinking about starting a Saints rebuild mock for 2-3 years, to see how I fair vs Sean Payton, Jeff Ireland and Mickey Loomis. I'm also considering doing a full expansion mock like this (which is why I started the Expansion Draft thread in NFL General), but I'm leaning towards a Saints alternate reality mock.

Mind sharing some pictures of your spreadsheets, or giving a rundown on how you keep everything organized year to year? I'm sure I could figure it out and will do things my own way, but seeing how someone else is doing it would be helpful. Much appreciated.

@jrry32

I'll just use Excel once the time comes. In my past long-term mock (which I retired after I built a team strong enough to contend), I started with Excel and then moved things over to a more user-friendly spreadsheet that Mike made for me (similar to his workbooks for his mocks). I don't have the spreadsheets made yet for this mock. I'll do that around the time FA starts. It'll be pretty basic stuff. This is what I was going to use last year, but I ended up killing the mock with plans to restart it this year because I ran out of time before the season began and wasn't going to have time to get it solved due to life changes (moving to a new state and starting a new job).

SLS-Workbook.jpg

It's pretty simplistic. But it's functional. I'll probably use a simplistic model again (the more complex ones are very time consuming, unless you're Mike lol).

With free agency expected to start next week, I'm going lay out my rules for FA and my list of targets. My top targets are the guys I want badly. The other targets are guys I might pursue. The other targets are listed in no order.

Rules

  • If a player re-signs with his original team, I can only sign him if I offer a contract that is both double the APY and overall value if the APY is below $10 million or 50% higher in terms of the APY and overall value if the APY is $10 million or more.
  • If a player signs with a new team, I can only sign him if I offer a contract that is both 20% higher in terms of the APY and overall value if the APY is below $10 million or 10% higher in terms of the APY and overall value if the APY is $10 million or more.

No one asked me, but...

1. I think if you want Lawrence you should take Lawrence. Overall, I think the trade you substituted is lopsided in the favor of the Jags, but that may have been your intention. Either that or you think Wilson is better or close. If I negotiated in the place of the Jags, I would have counteroffered this way: 1-2, 1-25 2-34 2(22) 1(23), and maybe tried to get a couple of your day 3 picks. Jags need players, and you do not need a boat of extra picks you need quality picks. You already have your boat of picks.

2. I cannot imagine the Cards signing JJ but then leaving Jones unprotected. But mainly I see these expansions as a drafting exercise so I don't get very upset either way. You are obviously earnest in your structure and not greedy, and that is the important thing.

3. I don't know what I'll do this year. Maybe keep both teams. Maybe sell one. I'm pretty prepared for the draft. I just find the rest of the management boring.

Picking Lawrence is too easy. I wanted the challenge of having to go it without him. The trade might favor the Jags, but I would rather be too conservative when making trade valuations like this. Plus, I wanted the extra picks. Quantity and quality are both important when building a team from scratch. I need depth.

I based it off of Dome's thread in NFL Gen. A Cardinals fans said they'd put Jones up.

I feel ya. Drafting is definitely my favorite part.

That's why I started mine with Bosa over Kyler too. Ended up with year two having Tua, Derrick Brown or Herbert at 4 the next year which was a tough decision. I went with Tua, but if Jacoby Brissett had been a touch better and wasn't about to lose his job to Rivers I would have heavily considered Brown since he was my favorite player in the draft. I'm not sure if you plan on still going QB with the second pick, but it is fun to take a lineman to solidify a unit a bit and then reevaluate to see where you can go year 2 (or 3 if you nailed a solid journeyman).

I was originally not going to take a QB, but I have decided that I'd be a fool to pass on Zach Wilson.

For free agents, do you have to make a decision on them within a certain period of time? I'd think you should have to match a contract or not within 24 hours so you won't know if someone else will later sign cheap elsewhere.

Also that trade for the first pick looks wildly unbalanced against Jacksonville.
