Man I'll be honest I did not see this coming out of Parsons. I didn't think he'd live up to an off-ball linebacker status for that selection, but damn, he's amazing at the edge.

I think I had it in my notes for Parsons that I thought he displayed some ability to rush off the edge, I saw it on tape a few times, but I never thought he'd be like this. I thought he'd like occasionally do it.

I’m just happy he ended up with a defensive coordinator that uses his versatility. That was my instant concern after drafting him and I started to have some instant regrets thinking to myself what if he goes and plays strictly off ball and isn’t blitzed often. That is where the value of off ball comes into play and regardless of that I did have him 8th on my board so I just crossed my fingers and stuck with it and had to trust my evaluation as I wasn’t reaching for need like some drafts in the past. I wanted him to end up in a 3-4 as an OLB or ILB in a blitz heavy scheme. But Dallas is using him in a multitude of ways which is great. Just last night he was running with the slot receiver down the sideline disrupted that pass leading to a Kearse interception. Played MLB and blitzed A and B gaps, as well as dropped into middle zone. Played edge rusher, and at the end of the game was used as a spy on Taysom. Can’t ask for more versatility than that.

Yeah, it's nice when a guy actually gets to display his versatility. Then here in BDL you can use him in a variety of ways. Sucks to have a guy who you think can be more versatile but he never gets a chance to show it.

Exactly that was my fear after I drafted him. And for every Parsons there is going to be a guy that is handicapped by scheme use like you mentioned.

I always enjoy looking back at these. My mock for us from November 18th

1. Sacramento (from Portland)- Trevor Lawrence QB Clemson

No change here.

2. WSR (from OKC)- Penei Sewell OT Oregon

With no threat of Sacramento to take a QB at 3 WSR can pick between their top non QB pick here. Sewell, Chase, Parsons could all get looks but ultimately Sewell is likely a generational talent and gives WSR a LT/RT for ten years.

3. Sacramento- Micah Parsons LB PSU

Parsons is a versatile defender that can allow me to utilize him in various ways in gameplan scheming and if I take away anything from the league this year it is have players that can do multiple things because injuries are a nasty mutha.

4. WSR (from Hungary)- Justin Fields QB OSU

WSR gets their QB. Fields has displayed incredible accuracy and decision making and WSR gets their LT and QB of the future in the first four picks.

5. Seoul- Ja’Marr Chase WR LSU

Seoul traded Sutton and they grab Chase here to give Kyler his number one receiver.

6. Antarctica- Kyle Pitts TE UF

What a receiving corps and then you add Pitts at TE? Yikes. No Oline is worth this pick with Sewell being off the board, so they add the explosive weapon to better their offense.

7. Sacramento (from Camden) Jaylen Waddle WR Bama

I add another Alabama speedster to my WR corps for the second year in a row. I believe he will come back healthy from his ankle injury and he gives my offense a dynamic playmaker for my QBs to utilize.

8. Rome- Kwity Paye Edge UM

Paye didn’t play this past week but he has been a terror before this week with 25 pressures in 3 games played. He has great size and athleticism and he really displays an all around game for a 4-3 end.

9. Sacramento (from NOLA)- Patrick Surtain ll CB Bama

I go back to the Bama well and add Patrick Surtain at CB. I have a solid group of corners despite what the critics think. Bryce Callahan has been a stud and I will likely 3 up him. Darious Williams has made 4 incredible interceptions and is really playing solid. Ceedy Duce is a solid player at nickel. Donte Jackson and CJ Henderson have great potential and Chidobe has been hurt this year but has shown potential as well and could be a possible 3 up. However in this league you need as many solid corners as you can and Surtain is good value here.

10. IC- Caleb Farley CB VT

IC goes corner here with the very talented Farley. He has size and ball skills to match great athleticism.

11. Singapore- Gregory Rousseau Edge Miami

They added Fletcher Cox to pair with Donald and now they add Rousseau who had 15.5 sacks as a redshirt freshman. He will help them with an edge presence and keep building on their dominant dline.

12. Cuba- Jaycee Horn CB SCAR

Horn is a riser and gives Cuba a big corner with excellent coverage skills to improve their secondary.

13. Camden (from Lancaster)- Devonta Smith WR Bama

Camden grabs Smith here to pair with Brown and Kupp after trading Hopkins and give them a player who can step in and run veteran routes and hit the grown running.

14. WSR- Rashod Bateman WR MIN

WSR adds a well rounded receiver who can do it all to their corps. They continue to build their offense with impressive building blocks after going almost entirely defensive in last years draft.

15. Seoul (from Berlin)- Dylan Moses LB Bama

Seoul adds Moses to bring an athletic heat seeking defensive presence to pair with Isaiah Simmons on their defense.

16. Gotham- Zach Wilson QB BYU

Gotham grabs their QB of the future with the rising Wilson.

Per tradion, here are your day one landing grades.  Please remember this is not an evaluation of the talent, more so in how I see their fit on the team and general playing time.  No one gets an F when you're a first round pick

Trevor Lawrence Jags:  A-   Jags have an actual offensive line that isn’t a dumpster fire which most rookie QB inherit.    The wild card is really going to see if Urban Meyer can be a successful coach at this level or whether he’ll be a Chip Kelly type dumpster fire.  Chark, Shenault and Westbrook give a solid trio with a reliable security blanket TE in Eifert and new RB Erienne

Zach Wilson Jets :  A-     Yes its New York, but if you look hard enough, this team actually doesn’t completely suck.  With the addition of Corey Davis and another rookie at guard, this team has a little bit of potential.  Davis as a number one is shaky but you have a deep threat in Mims and one of the best slot WR in Crowder.  They really need to address the running game though or people are gonna key in on destroying Wilson

Trey Lance San Francisco:  B   Some of this is the Jimmy G factor.  Normally a qb drafted this high doesn’t sit.  So if Jimmy gets moved, you can push this grade up.  Solid weapons on the outside, a qb friendly coach and a solid, if aging O Line.  I’m not as enamored with the WR as many are but Kittle is a stud and as long as he’s healthy will give Lance a nice safety valve across the middle.  Another team that may address the RB position soon in the draft

Kyle Pitts Atlanta:  B-   Pitts has amazing ability but he’s the third option in this offense with another tight end who is solid also on the roster.  There’s just a lot of mouths to feed in this passing game, not so much an indictment on Pitts himself

Jamar Chase Bengals B+   Joe Burrow connection makes this an easy higher grade.  He could easily become the number one WR here with tee as 2 and boyd as three makes a nice wr group.  What can hold this grade back however is the lack of time that may prevent Chase from getting downfield easily before Joe gets destroyed.  If the line outperforms, this grade is an A easily

Jaylen Waddle Dolphins C   Reconnecting with Tua will help, but I’m not sold on Tua, at all.  Not to mention he has another burner in Will Fuller already on the team with Devante Parker as well.  Kid can break any play at any time so if the offense gets creative that’s great, but you want your rookies to have guaranteed starting time, and I don’t know if that happens here outside of three wide

Penei Sewell- Lions A-  He’s going to start. They clearly like him a ton based upon the reaction in the draft room.  There’s happy, then there’s jumping up and down ecstatic.  Would be an A+ but rookie coach I don’t have a lot of knowledge about in developing O Line

Jaycee Horn Panthers  A+   Carolina’s scheme fits Horn’s playstyle and he won’t have to come in and be the number one right away with Jackson still there.  That’s basically the perfect recipe for what you want your cornerback to land in.  Starting gig where he doesn’t have to face number one WR in hs first year.

Patrick Surtain- Denver  A:  See Horn, Jaycee.  Only reason not an A+ is a little more CB talent in Denver to compete with

Devonta Smith Eagles  A-   He’s gonna be used early and often.  Only concern for me is that Jalen Hurts is ehh whatever at QB.  However I feel they will scheme the ball in his hands and let him do his thing

Justin Fields Bears D+   I don’t even know where to begin.  This feels like Trubisky 2.0 except they just signed Andy Dalton and still have Nick Foles with a coach who needs to win now to keep his job.  Weapons are OK, line is meh.  May not play year one, or will he.  Too many question marks here for a high grade

Micah Parsons Cowboys D-  I, dont, get it.  LVE and Jaylon Smith already here.  They run a 4-3 .  Unless there’s a trade I don’t see what Dallas is doing.  Jerry probably wanted Surtain and didn’t bother making a backup plan

Rashawn Slater Chargers A  When drafted you hope he went somewhere he’d be a LT and not a guard.  Perfect fit here.  They will allow him to develop and with Bulaga on the other side, can slide protection if need be to help him out early

Aliijah Vera Tucker Jets A   He’s a guard, he’ll start.  Not much more to say here

Mac Jones Patriots  C   Yes I hear the Tom Brady comparisons.  But frankly this is still a Cam offense which is the complete opposite of what Jones does.  It’s like having to install two different offenses.  The good news is that the patriots have a really nice line to keep him upright but the receiving weapons are, eh,  just average guys

Zaven Collins Cardinals  B  This is the team that finally figured out how to use Hassan Reddick last year, Collins kind of compares to Reddick so if they can get the same thing out of him, great.  Would have preferred him in a more traditional 43 team personally

Alex Leatherwood Raiders  LOL    I imagine he’ll start, where I don’t know unless they are giving up on Parker already.  The Raiders developing lineman under gruden has been well, not great

Jaelan Phillips Dolphins A  Will clearly have a heavy role on this team that gets creative in how they use their pass rushers.  Stays in the same city he went to college in so little adjustment needed.  Probably the best fit for him

Jamin Davis Washington A+   One thing I know about Ron Rivera is he will get the most out of his defensive talent.  Thisi kid has tools for days and Rivera will find a great fit for him.  Would have preferred him being in more a cover three based look as his pass recognition skills are superb but he has the athleticism to go one on one, if not the most experience doing so yet

Kadarius Toney  D-  The only thing saving this from an F is he somehow got drafted in the first round.  He got Golladay, Slayton, Shehard, hell even John Ross on this team who they signed earlier.  This goes with the Dallas, I don’t get it grade

Kwitty Paye Colts  B   Was there any doubt, he feels like a Colts kind of guy and that’s where he ends up.  Indy hasn’t had the best recent history with outside pass guys, but he could easily take the old Autry role where he goes outside on run downs and inside on pass downs which I think would be a boom for him.  We’ll see if that’s how they use him, would really boost the grade

Caleb Farley- Titans A  Well i think that this is a great fit.  Tennessee clearly needed to replace Adoree and get someone just like him.  Assuming they can keep him healthy, this is a nice scheme fit as well

Christian Darrisaw Vikings A-   This guy kind of reminded me of Brian O Neil coming out of college.  Which is interesting cause well, hes drafted by the same team.  Unfortunately O Neil has become a solid RT so we will see if they can develop Darrisaw, the job should be his to lost however on the left side

Najee Harris Steelers  A+    This may have been the most barren RB group I’ve ever seen so he is looking at three down work right off the bat,  Some concerns with the o line and a pass centric offense but once Ben leaves it’s gonna become the Najee Nightmare train

Travis Etienne Jags B-   This is probably the hardest grade I’ve had to give.  On one hand the Jags have a nice offensive line, on the other hand Urban has shown to like to rotate backs throughout his college career and James Robinson balled out last year.  Can certainly carve out a nice role but I also fear the ghost of Carlos Hyde swiping goal line touches

Greg Newsome Browns  C    So the browns now have Ward, Greedy, recently signed Troy Hill and now Newsome.  From a playing time perspective this isn’t great.  The browns do like their off man coverage though which is what Newsome is good at.  Although they also have a terrible time keeping dudes healthy whcih is also a newsome bugaboo

Rashod Bateman Baltimore B-   This is the tale of two scenarios.  The first is the Ravens clearly could use a large wide receiver upgrade.  The other side is they just completely suck at developing WR talent   He’ll have an opportunity for a large role however if he doesn’t suck

Payton Turner Saints D+   So this team gave Davenport the fifth year option earlier in the day and then drafted, another edge.  Unless Cam Jordan is on the trading block and I’m unaware Turner is looking at a rotational role at best.  The only thing that saves this from being a D or D- is that the Saints generally develop defensive lineman very well so long term its a nice fit

Eric Stokes  Packers B-    Definitely has a chance to start.  However, he feels more like Josh Jackson than Jaire Alexander.  The pack simply seem to draft at least one bust CB every year

Greg Rousseau Bills  B+  Has a nice chance to get a good piece of playing time.  If I had more faith in Buffalo developing pass rushers I’d give this a higher grade.  The better news is he probably won’t find as much trouble in Buffalo and he would in other places so maybe some of this off field concerns will be dissolved

Jayson Oweh Ravens  B-  A lot of people like the fit.  I just don’t know.  Ravens are really hit or miss with edge rushers and when they miss the guys almost never do better elsewhere.

Joe Tryon   Bucs C-  I just don’t like Tryon in a 3-4. Maybe they might switch to a more traditional look or have him do some situational pass rushing from the inside.  Not a lot of early playing time unless JPP or Barrett get hurt

A fun BDL tradition. BCB’s landing  grades

Man, Dylan Moses had such an enormous fall

I wasn't too shocked. I think his sophomore season was a bit overrated and mostly just showed potential to be a top guy. Then he had the knee injury and came back his senior year and did not play well. I didn't think he would go undrafted but I wasn't shocked by it either. To me, it always felt a lot more about his potential than how good he actually was.

Speaking of Bama linebackers, Christian Harris has fallen off since last season. I watched some of his tape after last year's draft and was impressed, he looked like a legit top half of the first round caliber kind of guy, maybe even top 10 if you're fine taking a LB that high. I watched some of this year's tape and he just looks so much slower processing and stuff. He's still I think a very late 1st, early 2nd kind of guy but nowhere near how he looked last year.

From December 23rd

2021 Mock Round 1

1. Sacramento (from Portland)- Trevor Lawrence QB Clemson

Jags, Jets, Sasquatch... all teams that could use TLaw

2. WSR (from Hungary)- Penei Sewell OT Oregon

Franchise Tackle to pair with Austin Jackson and improve the WSR oline. They have the cap space to 3 up Dion Dawkins also and have three good tackles and depth at a vital position.

3. WSR (OKC)- Zach Wilson QB BYU

I believe Wilson has played his way to QB #2 as much as Fields has played himself out of it. Wilson gives WSR a QB who can sling the ball from all angles, make plays eluding pressure, improvise, and make every throw.

4. Sacramento- Ja’Marr Chase WR LSU

I take a top WR here. Yes he opted out but the potential and early breakout production are there and hopefully Chase gives me a #1 I’ve been lacking.

5. Seoul- Micah Parsons LB PSU

Samsel likes versatility and Micah can do it all from the LBer position. They need WR help and there are two sitting here for the taking that could be worth this pick but it is also a deep draft at the position. Samsel opts to go with an enforcer here to pair with Isaiah Simmons and give him some defensive flexibility as he can rush Micah off the edge or inside gaps or drop him into coverage and interchange some responsibilities with Simmons giving this defense some unpredictability offenses have to try to account for.

6. AKB- Kyle Pitts TE UF

I am not breaking from this pick. They have a deep WR group and Kmet has flashed at TE, but Pitts is uber talented and can be a matchup chess piece for AKB. He is too athletic for LBers and too big for safeties and corners. He wins jump balls and can rack up the YAC. Definitely a player I wouldn’t want to face twice a year.

7. Sacramento (from Camden)- Patrick Surtain ll CB Bama

Big corner can make plays on the ball and has become a very dependable run defender. Great pedigree and a true football player.

8. Rome- DeVonta Smith WR Bama

Playmaker to replace Juju. Gives Herbert a dependable weapon who just always seems to be open. Despite his size he plays much bigger and has great hands and sneaky elusiveness and speed.

9. Sacramento (from NO)- Kwity Paye Edge UM

I need edge help and Paye is arguably the most well rounded player against the pass and run while also being a physical freak with great game effort. He had an injury derail his season but he was off to a superb start with over twenty pressures in three games. Hopefully he can continue his development at the next level and give me a much needed upgrade at edge.

10. Camden (from Lancaster)- Jaylen Waddle WR Bama

Fields is tempting here for Jlash, but Baker has been playing well and Love is hopefully the future for him. Now he may go Fields as BPA but I think Waddle gives the offense another dimension. Adding him to Brown, Kupp, and Hamler would give Camden more explosion and another tough weapon to matchup with.

11. WSR- Caleb Farley CB VT

WSR would have liked Waddle to fall here but they get a nice consolation prize in Farley. Farley is a big athletic playmaker at corner and could be a replacement for Slay if he is not 3upped.

12. Gotham- Justin Fields QB OSU

Gotham picks up their QBOTF and Derek Carr replacement here. They may look to the shark tank for another starter but Fields is BPA and Gotham roles with the Buckeye.

13. Singapore- Gregory Rousseau Edge Miami

Singapore has some key contributors at edge heading to FA this offseason and while they have Hunter and Preston Smith, they can continue to make a scary dline even scarier with the super talented Rousseau. Now experience is what’s missing for this prospect as he really only has one season of tape, however as a third  rusher for a team that already has starters outside while he develops his pass rush moves to go with his dominant physical tools he is too good to pass up and Singapore can afford the wait.

14. Seoul (from Berlin)- Rashod Bateman WR MIN
Bateman is underrated imo and with Seoul passing up the opportunity to add a WR at 5 they take their Sutton replacement here. Bateman has a really good all around game and can be a number one for this offense.

15. Cuba (TBD went in alphabetical order)- Daviyon Nixon INT Iowa

Sira1 introduced me to this player and he has since won Big10 defensive player of the year. A penetrating DT with strength and athleticism he will rise come Draft time and fills a big need for Cuba on their interior Dline after shipping Cox away.

16. IC (TBD went in alphabetical order)- Trey Lance QB NDSU

Whether they win the Bizz Bowl or not they have had a successful season with a lot of young talent returning in 2021. They will likely bring back Tannehill but can definitely afford to take a flier here on Lance as their QBOTF. He has a lot of tools to like and knowing how IC has drafted will probably turn into a pro bowler for them soon enough.

Round 2

17. Sacramento (from Portland)- Christian Darrisaw OT VT

I like what I’ve seen from Wills this season and believe he will continue to improve. With Havenstein and Collins back next year I do like my tackle group. However going BPA and never being able to have enough good olinemen, I go with my #2 OT in the class in Darrisaw. He has prototypical size and plus movement skills to be a franchise LT.

18. IC (from OKC)- Jalen Mayfield OT UM

Mayfield is on the rise as a prospect in this draft. A young player with great length, athleticism, and play strength he would give IC a good prospect at a much needed position.

19. Sacramento- Wyatt Davis OG OSU

Joe Thuney is a 3up candidate for me but he might be priced out of my range. I  am happy with the play of Risner and rookie Jonah Jackson who has started for Detroit since game 1 this year, however again you can’t have enough depth on the Oline and Davis is a better prospect than both and likely would earn a starting job on my line.

20. IC (from Hungary)- Creed Humphrey C OU

Four Olineman in a row thanks to SacTown and IC!? Yep. IC continues to build their oline with Humphrey at C. Humphrey is a strong mauler at C and him in between Damien Lewis and Zack Martin adding Mayfield at T gives this team a dominant Oline to protect their QBs and open up running lanes for their RBs.

21. AKB- Jaycee Horn CB Scar

They have needs at Edge, OL, and CB. AKB roles with Horn to group up with Lattimore and Okudah with hopes of being able to matchup and stop three receiver sets. Horn is a physical corner with NFL bloodlines, who can press and bring a toughness to the AKB secondary.

22. Sacramento (from Seoul)- Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah LB ND

I have been very pleased with the play of Cole Holcomb since he returned healthy for Washington and the continued growth of Kenneth Murray. Adding JOK will give me a rangy fly to the ball LBer to matchup on backs and TEs while also blitzing as he has successfully done at the college level. He is a versatile defender who makes some big plays and would be a welcomed addition to our defense.

23. Rome (from Camden)- Jaelen Phillips Edge Miami

Phillips has really come on this year and looks like the former number one recruit he was touted to be when he arrived at UCLA. A couple years later and he has been having a very good season for the Canes. Rome needs an edge presence and after Paye and Rousseau there is a battle for the third edge. Rome rolls the dice on the very gifted Phillips and hope that he continues to develop into a game wrecking edge in the NFL.

24. Rome- Eric Stokes CB UGA

Rome adds a very talented corner to their roster. Eric has experience going against some top receivers in the SEC. Humphrey and William Jackson are due to be FA and this gives Rome the flexibility if they do not want to 3up both or added depth to develop behind them if they are both resigned.

25. Camden (from NO)- Travis Etienne RB Clemson

Etienne is a talented do it all back that pairs well with Damien Harris to give Camden a good 1-2 punch. RB value might not be the best here but Etienne is a game changer and can really help the Camden offense become more multi dimensional and have another talented receiving option in the passing game as well with Etienne’s ability.

26. WSR- Azeez Ojulari Edge UGA

With Shaq Barrett possibly leaving in FA, WSR grabs a pass rusher to pair on the other side of Burns. Ojulari has a quick first step and would give the Soul Reavers quite the pass rushing Tandem for their 3-4 defense.

27. Gotham- Najee Harris RB Bama

Gotham grabs a RB here to pair with Jacobs to give them a 1-2 punch better than Camden’s... Harris has been great this season and really can do it all. A violent runner who fights for extra yards and provides a reliable target in the passing game. Insurance for Jacobs and some of his injury woes he has had this season, in case they carry over into next.

28. Camden (from Lancaster)- Terrace Marshall Jr. WR LSU

Camden already went Waddle in the first and have plenty of receivers already. However I have a sneaky suspicion they like Marshall and take him here. Camden will go BPA and double up at positions as shown with the Evans and OBJ selections in the past and they do that here with another LSU receiver.

29. Singapore- Rashawn Slater OL NW

Singapore has Duane Brown on a one year contract going into 2021. They could use depth behind him and an upgrade at G and Slater provides the ability to do both. Slater opted out but had some good tape in 2019 including his performance against Chase Young. Samuel Cosmi could be an option here at OT as well but Singapore goes for the versatility here.

30. Berlin- Trey Smith OL TENN

Berlin gets one of their favorites here. Berlin has had some good oline play this season and this may be a luxury pick here but Smith is quite the prospect if his medicals all check out.

31. NO (from Cuba)- Zaven Collins LB Tulsa

Collins has made plays all season. He’s a big backer with good movement skills and instincts. He could really bring a dynamic playmaker to the Jazz defense and provide some versatility as a rusher or coverage player depending on scheme and play call. I think Lukic could have a lot of fun utilizing this player.

32. IC- Trevon Moehrig-Woodard S TCU

IC needs a FS and TMW reminds me a lot of Justin Simmons in his build and play style. TMW has very good range and can play deep but also has the size to come up and play the run. FS is the biggest weakness on that very talented IC defense and they fill the hole here.
