AFC Championship - Buffalo at Kansas City

Even before the game was set, there was already a big issue. Will Patrick Mahomes be available or still on concussion watch. We will see.

Something else is true. The game will set history. For the first time ever, the same team will host three AFC Championships in a row. Never happened since the merger in 1970.

Early word on Mahomes is good.

Update: It appears Mahomes may have a neck injury rather than a concussion. That has it's own problems, but chances of him playing Sunday have increased.

Since concussion protocol is going to be an issue, here is a summary. Mahomes passed the tests at the stadium. Now he gets an independent nuero-focused exam. This also applies to Bashaud Breeland.

The early line on the game is a toss, with maybe a paper thin edge to the Chiefs. 538 has it as 52% Chiefs. Packers are strongly favored in the NFC.

The forecast is currently for 50° and rain. Make of that what you wish.

Snap counts are in.
https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2021/1/18/22237177/chiefs-browns-snap-counts-lbs-stabilize-hardman-and-williams-play-more

Other than increased time because of player injuries, not much new on offense. The OL was Eric Fisher, Nick Allegretti, Austin Reiter, Andrew Wylie and Mike Remmers the whole game. This a bit surprising, since Remmers was listed as questionable. Darrel Williams, not Le'Veon Bell got 80% of the snaps. Nick Keizer did not have an uptick with Deon Yelder out, except on ST. Instead, the team used fewer two TE sets. Hardman, and Pringle picked up slack from increased standard sets and Watkins being out.

On defense the secondary was normal until Breeland went out for concussion. Then Hamilton had two snaps. At LB Hitchens and Wilson carried the load with Neimann getting about half the snaps. Up front, Clark and Jones went 80%, Wharton, Okafor and TK were about 50%, with Pennel and Danna at 25%. This is probably the planned defense unless Breeland is out.

While most of the attention has been focused on Mahomes concussion/neck injury, it should be noticed that there was a toe injury as well. Chris Simms was commenting that it will restrict his mobility severely, may have actually helped his pocket mechanics.

Tough, tough day this one. Josh can and will move the ball up and down on us. I really think it will be a game where we need to hold them to FGs. They probably will run it, even though they don't have as good a run game, but I think they test us. HAVE to do something about Diggs. Tyrann?

Their defense hasn't impressed me outside the Baltimore game (where it really did impress me), but Mahomes and co. are a completely different animal.

I really rate Milano and White, and elements of their DL but otherwise I think we move the ball on them and score

The Pro Football Writers announced their All-NFL team, which includes Kelce and Mathieu, no surprise on either. Mahomes, Hill and Chris Jones made the All-AFC team. The Rookie team includes CB L'Jarius Sneed and P Tommy Townsend. That's a 4th round pick and an UDFA in case you are keeping track.

More on Sneed. Great pick.

Is it me or does it seem like Townsend has been here for longer than this year?

Fun fact. In the first playoff game, Townsend never punted.

Matt Lane did his film review on Darrel Williams. Rel had a nice game, 17 touches for 94 yards. He had a TD, but mostly he was the guy moving the chains. One thing that I like is that he is a verticle runner, vs Clyde and Bell's more lateral style. Since our OL is strongly biased to pass pro, a downhill RB makes the most of smaller holes.
