Browns crowded 53 man roster

It will be interesting to see what changes with the roster size when the league goes to 17 games, if at all, but for the first time in a long time, I'm really interested in knowing who we are going to draft.  If we play this right we could have a LOT of depth and be able to also choose the best players available.

I have listed below who we have at each position, and in red I have listed the borderline players who can easily be replaced in the draft or just not make the team, and underlined are the players who are not technically on the books for next year.

QB: Baker Mayfield, Case Keenum

RB: Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, D'Ernest Johnson, John Kelly

FB: Andy Janovich

TE: Austin Hooper, Harrison Bryant, David Njoku, Stephen Carlson

WR: Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, Donovan Peoples-Jones, KhaDarel Hodge, Jojo Natson

T: Jedrick Wills, Jack Conklin, Chris Hubbard, Alex Taylor

G: Joel Bitonio, Wyatt Teller, Drew Forbes, Michael Dunn, Blake Hance

😄 JC Tretter, Nick Harris

DE: Myles Garrett, JaDeveon Clowney, Takkarist McKinley, Curtis Weaver, Porter Gustin

DT: Andrew Billings, Sheldon Richardson, Malik Jackson, Jordan Elliott, Sheldon Day

LB: Jacob Phillips, Anthony Walker, Sione Takitaki, Malcolm Smith, Mack Wilson, Elijah Lee

S: John Johnson III, Grant Delpit, Ronnie Harrison, Sheldrick Redwine

CB: Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, Troy Hill, M.J. Stewart, Robert Jackson, A.J. Green

K: Cody Parkey

P: Jamie Gillan

LS: Charley Hughlett

There are some obvious places we can use draft picks to upgrade, such as CB, #4 Safety, #5 & 6 WR, #4 TE.

The place where I am REALLY curious what we do is along the defensive line.  We really only have 2 players on the line that are under contract after this year.
We also have a very talented line as it is, so cutting players Richardson or Weaver (possibly based on potential) could be a difficult decision.
I'm pretty sure we should draft a DT because it would be a large hole next year otherwise.  I'm pretty sure we should draft a DE because Clowney and Takk are only prove it deals and they may prove nothing.  I just don't know who you get rid of to make room on the depth chart for the players we inevitably need to draft.

We also should be looking for upgrades along the offensive line, because I don't know that we will be able to afford Teller after this year, I don't know how many years we have left in either Bitonio or Tretter, but we are currently paying a TON of money to our (rather outstanding) offensive line.  I don't know how long that can keep up!

WR will also be a really interesting thing to watch.  We could draft someone early, have them patiently sit behind Beckham and Landry, and end up next year with the drafted player, Higgins, and Peoples Jones as our core which would allow us to use that 30 million dollars saved to keep players like Teller and Chubb who might be more important to the team.

I just wanted to throw out what I've been thinking about a lot lately, and see what direction you guys see us going on the lines and in the WR group.

I haven't posted in a while, but i've been enjoying getting back into thinking about football as the draft approached.

Its so good to not worry about who were going to take at 5 who needs to turn around the franchise!

I could get used to picking in the late 20's and early 30's!

Great post highlights our lack of depth on defense. I'd like to see a replacement in the wings for jarvis and obj but it looks like we are going all on on defense.

Our defense should be known as the rentals.

Apparently there is a lack of depth in the draft in key areas for us, dline and cornerback.

Nick Harris is 100% more replaceable than a couple of guys listed as such (MJ Stewart/Hodge/Hubbard), but I do think this is a nice exercise in recognizing the depth on the team.

The draft is also strong at oline. In terms of guards he was probably the worst we put out all year

I’d be shocked if Hubbard is not on the roster this year.  Same with Hodge, he was a starter last year and a good special teamer.

I don't disagree but if they found a tackle they liked in the draft and were looking to cut money somewhere, I could see them saving the 3.6 million and not using up the roster spot on someone they replaced with someone cheaper in the draft.

Hodge I think is a different story.  He is under contract for this year but his contract has zero dead money.  Right now we have Beckham, Landry, Higgins, DPJ, Hodge and Natson.  We don't run more TE's out there than WRs.  We wont carry 7 wide receivers, I'm not even sure it makes sense to carry 6.  Natson right now is our 6th because hes a return specialist for us.  If we draft a WR who gets cut? You can argue its Natson, but with DPJ emerging last year, and Natson returning, I think the most likely is Hodge.  I would say Higgins is a possibility but his contract is mostly guaranteed.

Add OG Blake Hance, LB Elijah Lee, DT Sheldon Day, and RB John Kelly to the bubble spots IMO. None of them are guaranteed to make it but I think they'll survive until TC and get to compete for a spot.

Good grief, this roster is so good right now.

The players I put in red had some to do with guys who are replaceable , but also a lot to do with who drafted them, and why they were drafted.  I like Stewart as a slot, but if we sign another corner, and draft one, that pushes him to 6? Lets say we draft 2 corners, were probably not keeping MJ Stewart over Hill, Greedy, Ward, or the two guys we drafted.  I'm not saying he WILL be gone, I'm just saying it looks like he would be on the bubble.

Check my post above for Hubbard and Hodge.

Right now Harris was drafted by this front office, he fits the zone blocking scheme, he can play guard, and is currently the only other center on the roster.

That is what I got from this exercise as well.  I think not only will we be really talented, but I think we will be deep to.  I don't want to talk about what we could contend for but I can't WAIT for the season.

Does anyone else like Curtis Weaver as much as I do?

I keep seeing him as someone they don't have room for, but he was SOOOOOO good in college, I want to see what he can do!

I think his chances of sticking around are gonna be tied to how high of quality the DE we get in the draft is. If we get a DE in the 1st, I doubt Weaver makes it. But let's say we go CB/WR/DT with our first 3 picks. Then take a developmental DE in the 4th. In that case, maybe we keep an extra on the roster for depth, in which case I like Weaver to beat out Gustin for the spot.

I personally think tackle is a “need”, albeit a day 3 need.

Hubbard I think is here either way as he’s proven capable of playing 4 spots along the OL.  You don’t give that guy up without a PROVEN replacement imo.

Thats why I think they go tackle R4-5.  Get a guy they like, let him learn and grow for a year and he’s your swing tackle next season.

I think we could definitely see 7 provided the IR rules stay the same.  Receivers get banged up.

And id absolutely cut Natson before Hodge personally.
