Why didn't the 2002 Patriots repeat?

In 2002, the patriots had their playoff destiny in their own hands in week 17 v. Jets @new england.

The long and short of it is,,, Chad Pennington was better than Tom Brady. Exit Patriots.

They faced the Dolphins in week 17. Ricky Williams ran for like 200 yards in that game. They still won in OT but it didn't matter because Brett Favre did Brett Favre things against the Jets.

No, it’s not.

Belichick literally grabbed the best talent around the league for years.  He drafted Brady and Gronk, but that’s about it.

All his other talent came from other teams and were already proven.

Noll managed to keep and maintain a super star team that he drafted and won multiple Super Bowls with them despite them getting older over the decade.

The free agency process has made it easier for teams to build a dynasty.  Chuck Noll did that at a time when you  solely had to go by draft picks and walk ons.  It’s was much more difficult on his time than now.

How many teams have built a dynasty in the Free Agency Era?

I would just say that it's hard to win back to back super bowls. It has only happened 8 times.

I also would like to say that I think its funny that people always say the Patriots cheated and were spying on other teams, when they got in trouble for filming from the wrong location. The filming part was fine it was just they were in the wrong spot. The wrong pad thing was actually practicing in pads at a May rookie camp, which also had 15 veterans there. You can also add Crampgate (2012) Tarpgate (1976) Salarycapgate (2000){lost a 3rd round pick} Steroidgate (1970-2007) Impedegate (2013) to the Steelers' list of accomplishments. But none of these were responsible for the Patriots failure to repeat in 2002.

You are underselling the Patriots scandal. There is a reason that Goodell destroyed the tapes. If the only issue present was the location of the taping, the league would have released to footage in an effort to give more credibility to their sport. In what way would it have been a benefit for the leagues to destroy the tapes if they were as you claim?

There are reports that they had gone as far as to film the Rams walkthrough practice. You might try to argue that it didn't make much of a difference too, but BB is the greatest head coach of all time, right? Why would he risk his legacy on something that wouldn't give him any advantage?

Spygate isn't a new conversation and has been talked to death so Its not worth arguing over. Just wanted to highlight some curious points.

funny looking back at that team and the NFL during that yr. I remember talks of the pats as being a one off Cinderella type team and people wondering if the NFL will suffer from no longer having dynasties due to the salary cap..pretty sure that was a debate on PTI

Devil's advocate here.

It's generally accepted that it is harder to build a dynasty in today's NFL due to competitive pricing afforded by FA and the salary cap.

It would also seem that the Patriots actually had a huge advantage over the league because of this. Because of " the Patriot way"' i.e. Tom Brady taking very team friendly deals and Bill being able to leverage Toms willingness to take less for the good of the team, by convincing other players to do the same the Patriots were able to consistently field very competitive teams while staying below the cap while other teams were being forced to overpay players, which severely impacted those teams ability to match the Patriots talent level.

I want to be clear here. The Patriots had/have one of the best if not the best dynasty in all of sports. They dominated football for 20 years. This is not meant to be a dig at them. I just think it's worth wondering aloud whether the common notion the Patriots dynasty is made more impressive because of FA and salary cap restrictions holds up, or if they were more auccesfull because of it, thanks to their players being willing to take less than other players on other teams.

A lot more teams in the league today are potential dynasties.

The cheatriots just have the most trophies because Belichick has unprecedented pull with Goodell and the players association.  They have let him get away with a lot.

He’s good for ratings because he is pro football’s Darth Vader/**** Cheney.

He is the guy every team in the league wants to upset (and part of the plot is for Mac Jones to be the next Tom Brady).

That’s why the NFL puts New England on more prime time games than any other team.

It’s not a hard concept.  The NFL is becoming more and more like the WWE everyday.

Seriously, a very quick Google search dispels this notion...

So unless Belicheck secretly went to coach Dallas or Pittsburgh, your claim is full of hot air.

I am a research nerd and try to correct any misrepresentation of facts.

I went back ad took a look at Noll and he won 2 NFL Championships as a player with the Browns and lost 2 others.

  • He was a 2-way Guard/LB but I could not say one way or another about how good he was. (56 starts in 77 regular season games)

Those count, so put Noll up to an incredible 11 Championship games... its still 5 less than Belichick.

TV only cares about ratings. The NFL cares about TV paying them as much as possible.

Pittsburgh and Dallas established themselves as the top 2 teams in the 70s and fortified that with the 90s (Dallas) and the 2000s (Pittsburgh)

NE was on all the time because they won all the time and because they had Brady. They still did not draw like Dallas and Pittsburgh.

AFAIK, the Steelers have played home games in St Louis (2015 before the Rams moved) and DC (in the last 10 years when fan indifference meant a 70-30 Steelers fan split at Fed-Ex)  The Cowboys are probably the number 3 football team in Philly behind the Eagles and Steelers. It was crazy how many Cowboys fans existed in Philly (Cataldi on 610 called them cockroaches (you see one but there are hundreds more))
