A 2nd round guard should be expected to start IMO, even if they’re not great right away. They should be capable early. If we draft a guard at 39 or 48 and they’re only a depth player in 2022 most people will say it’s a wasted pick or that the pick is a miss. I will agree that tackle sees less year 1 starters from R2.

The numbers don’t really support that.

Agreed. I don't think we'll see a high-value FA acquisition.

This is a consequence of having 45M in dead money. The good news is the Bears can roll over as much unused cap space as they want into 2023.

We have 130 million dollars next year. They aren’t restricted financially.

If you look at the last there drafts it does…

2021:

Creed Humphry should have been a Pro Bowler.

Landon Dickerson played extremely well in 14 games.

Jackson Carman was a starter by the end of the year.

Josh Meyers (begrudgingly) looked excellent for the Packers before he got hurt.

2020:

Robert Hunt has been a starter from day one on the interior of Miami’s OL and only gave up 2 sacks in nearly 1,200 snaps last season.

Ezra Cleveland has been a solid presence inside for the Vikes.

2019:

Elgton Jenkins has been really good for the Packers.

Max Scharping has been rock solid for the Texans.

Dalton Risner has started 47 games.

Erick McCoy has started 43 games.

Cody Ford has been up and down…Aaron Banks & Dillon Radunz haven’t had much opportunity since they were drafted by two teams with quality offensive lines as is.

You’re right. The point I’m making is that at least the unused dollars can be rolled into future years when the team might have some financial restrictions.

I think sitting on money this year is taking a big risk with Fields.

Last season Humphries was elite.

Meyers was good.

Dickerson was average.

Carmen was benched multiple times.

Banks was bad enough to be largely inactive.

Radnuz lost his job to a journeymen backup in Quessenberry.

Cosmi was okay.

Jenkins barely played

Eichenberg was very up and down and doesn’t look like he will hold the job.

Walker Little looked solid when he played late in the season.

Some of this just isn't true at all...

Dickerson was way better than average...which would still be far better than we had last year.

Carmen didn't start a game till week 3 so wasn't benched...he came in because of injury and started 3 games before going back out the lineup when the starter returned...

Radnuz didn't lose his job either given he was inactive 3 out the first 4 games...

Cosmi, Jenkins, Eichenberg & Little all played OT...which is clearly a harder position to play than inside so are a moot point.

Did we have any 2nd round draft picks that started from day one or shortly thereafter on our offensive line recently?

Cody Whitehair & James Daniels both started from day 1...if anything when they were young they were more efficient than they are now.

Exactly.

If we draft Zion Johnson at 39 and he doesn’t start in 2022 you can’t tell me that’s not a huge disappointment. C’mon now.
