swede700
I think it certainly points to something whether Evero is not interested in staying, or he didn't click with Payton.

That's my thought right now. HC offer or not, he doesn't seem to want to stay....and he wants to join his friends Kevin and Kwesi as Kings of the North. SemperFeist
If they are interviewing Flores, or anyone, for a position that is currently filled, that’s an obvious sign that it’s a position no longer filled.

They’re probably hoping that he gets a head coaching job so that they don’t need to buy out his contract. Likewise, they probably don’t want to truly let him go if there’s a chance they lose a guy like Flores to a HC job. If they allow him to interview for other DC jobs, why would they need to buy out his contract?
vike daddy
Steve Wilks was identified as a candidate to be the next 49ers defensive coordinator before DeMeco Ryans was officially hired as the new head coach of the Texans and his meeting with the team about the job has now been set. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Wilks is scheduled to interview with the 49ers on Monday. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/02/03/steve-wilks-set-to-interview-with-49ers-monday/
vike daddy
The Broncos were named in Flores’ 2022 lawsuit, in which he alleged that then-General Manager John Elway and then-president Joe Ellis put him through a sham interview before ultimately hiring Vic Fangio as head coach. The Broncos called the allegations “blatantly false.” Ellis is no longer with the organization and Elway only serves as a consultant. Also interestingly, the Dolphins were planning on pursuing Payton to replace Flores last offseason before Flores’ lawsuit. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/02/03/report-broncos-request-interview-with-brian-flores-for-defensive-coordinator/

swede700
Sounds like they're following the exact same interview list as the Vikings...well, since Atlanta already hired Nielsen, I guess Payton can't go that route. 🤣

I don't find that immensely surprising. He already knew he wasn't the #1 choice here (as he wasn't a year ago), so why let himself continue to twist in the wind? Well, now it's basically Flores or Evero...with, of course, Pettine being the ultimate fall-back plan. Edited February 3, 2023 by swede700
SemperFeist
Worst case scenario is that Flores and Evero get the Cardinals and Colts head coaching jobs, respectively. But I would see that as a long shot. Desai withdrawing his candidacy for the spot is unfortunate, but as @swede700 said, he wasn’t the top choice and he knew it.
