2023 Combine-Who Are You Most Curious About?

Just Want A Title

Ok, makes sense.  I guess I would want to combine it with like a 3 cone or some other change of direction measure because if you are claiming additional value for a route runner who is bigger but has acceleration, he needs to show he can do it when changing direction.  If both are running straight routes, I would prefer the faster 40 guy with a similar 10 yard split no matter the height (within reason).  But if making moves over the middle and being a big target within the 10-15 yard area, changing directions and accelerating makes more impact IMO.

I have the speed score (HASS), Explosion Score (Bench + Vert + Broad), Agility (3C + SS)... I just tweaked the Explosion and Agility scores to account for height and weight where I previously only had the ES adjusted for height and I didn't account for either in the Agility scores. JSN went from an elite score to a relatively average score based on his height and weight (the individual scores were showing as elite in purple). Might change that as I don't think it's as reflective of what it should be.

What I'm trying to do is something kind of like RAS but maybe less simple - colour coded metrics that help guys stand out in terms of their athleticism and how they compare against previous draft classes (and their peers). This should help to bring awareness to someone maybe we should be paying attention to. If you marry it with production (either a PFF score or more in depth with some of the other metrics I've used post-season) you can get a better picture of what this person may or may not be.

Guys like Maxx Crosby and John Cominsky have popped out in previous years although there's always athletic freaks that don't wind up doing much on the field either.

  • Darkangelo - 6'1, 230 lbs - 77.1 OVR; 85.6 RDEF; 57.8 COV
  • Graham - 6'2, 220 lbs - 67.5 OVR; 64.5 RDEF; 69.9 COV
  • Nowaske - 6'2, 234 lbs - No PFF Score
  • McCaskill - 6'0, 220 lbs - 51.1 OVR; 56.9 RDEF; 51.5 COV

Just highlighting a few guys from the local visits. It might provide some perspective on what the Lions are looking for in terms of their prospects.

Nowaske had an incredible pro day

  • 40: 4.50 (1.59 10YS) = 117.60 Speed Score (Elite - Top 5%)
  • VJ: 34.5 (Top 30%)
  • BP: 25 (Top 30%
  • BJ: 122" (Top 20%) > 184.65 Explosion Score (Top 10%)
  • 3C: 6.75 (Elite)
  • SS: 4.20 (Top 30%) > 10.76 Agility Score (Elite - Top 5%)

He offers some solid athletic tools, seems to have a good head on his shoulders and was productive. He's a guy that would need some time to develop and get up to speed but he has some promise either as a late round or UDFA guy.

That hadn't come up on POD or other searches. I've been trying to curate from different sources since there seem to be gaps on different sites.

From what I know, Risdon is a beat person, so I'd say I would count that. It is also on POD now.

I just don't have Twitter otherwise I'd be seeing stuff like that. I just try to rely on sites like POD or other lists (since POD has missed a couple ones as well) and bring it all together.

He seems like a run-stuffing NT.  He may be big but he doesn't seem create too much pocket pressure.  Maybe the Lions see something more.

I don't like Ika that much - he has short arms and just doesn't seem to offer much.

Surprisingly, he actually rates better as a pass rusher (76.1) than run stuffer (69.1). However, he has a below-average pressure rate (8.3%), sacks (0%), and stop % (6.6%). He did have above-average hurries (6.9%) and hits (1.4%). Keondre Coburn has better production and tested better despite being similar size.

Regarding visits, this has been nagging my brain... Do we have confirmation that Carter visited the Lions? All the stories were that he "will visit," and that was the same day that Campbell made his "interesting information" comment. I never saw a follow up story that he came in today and talked to the team yadda yadda, or they went somewhere to meet with him. Do we know if that happened? Because if it didn't, well that obviously says a lot.

I don't know when it happened, but Justin Rogers is about as credible as you can get with this info. Pretty sure in the Campbell interview during the owners meeting he confirmed the meeting.
