“Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne became the first player to receive the franchise tag this offseason, according toESPN's Adam Schefter. If he signs the deal, Payne will earn an estimated $18.937 million, per Schefter, on a fully guaranteed one-year deal.

More than anything, this extends the window for Payne and the Commanders to negotiate a long-term extension. The two sides would have had until Mar. 15 — the official start of free agency and the 2023 league year — to agree on a new deal. But now, the Commanders have until July 17 to sign Payne to a long term deal.

Worst case: Payne plays the 2023 season on the franchise tag and the cycle restarts next offseason.“

Refusing to trade him was the biggest mistake. Dude clearly didn't want to be here anymore. At the point that he didn't get extending after playing on the tag the first time, he should have been shipped off to the highest bidder.

Gotta be able to read the writing on the wall.

Well, we get a third. We had no trade leverage. Not sure how we could have done. Only a 3rd and 5 th for Trent. Not much for them and Capt Kirk. Terrible management for sure.

We didn’t just get a 3rd we got another year of play out of him too.

Sensible move. Would love to see a long-term deal worked out once the new owner is onboard — or a trade. The year-to-year franchise tag thing isn’t an answer, but this buys them some time to get a new money man in the building to go ask for the funds to seal a deal.

Lions fan here with a question.

Assuming he signs the tag before the draft so he could be traded how would you feel about using him to trade up for a QB?

For example if one of the top 3 QBs is still there something like

Detroit gets: 16, 118, Payne

Washington gets: 6

I think that values him around a 1st round pick I'm not sure on the value chart stuff.

I doubt it would happen but off-season is boring and a good time for what if scenarios.
