The STL Cardinals Thread - New Season, Same Old Cardinals?

Keith Law's top 100 prospects came out...

Quote

Gorman ranks 39th. Law offers this assessment:

Gorman had some draftitis in the spring, trying to do way too much to impress scouts when he already had grade-80 power that was unmatched in the draft class. Freed from pre-draft pressure, he performed beyond all expectations last summer, skipping the Gulf Coast League, hitting .350/.443/.664 in the Appy League and finishing with Low-A Peoria at age 18, where of course he struggled. It speaks to how advanced he looked in short-season ball and how confident the Cardinals are in his bat and his makeup that they challenged him like that.

While he struck out too often for Peoria, that's likely going to be his game: a lot of strikeouts, some walks and prodigious power, the 30-40 homer a year kind of power that changes games and will sit him right in the middle of a lineup. He's best suited to third base, at least for now, needing work on the fundamental aspects of playing the position, but he has enough raw ability to end up average there with some effort. His future is really about the power, though. If he hits enough to get to that power, and I think he will, he's going to fight for home run titles for a long time.

USA Baseball's 18U National Team Director Matt Blood concurred, offering this assessment to TheCardinalNation.com: “I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that he will be a guy at the big league level — once he turns into a professional hitter — that is in the running to be the home run king each year. He has got that kind of power.”

Montero ranks 64th. Here is what Law wrote about him:

Montero came a bit out of nowhere to win the Midwest League MVP at age 19 last year, thanks to a .321/.381/.529 line that earned him a late-season promotion to High-A. He is a big, very strong kid who makes a lot of hard contact, with some pull power but also a lot of doubles the other way, strong enough to take pitches on the outer third and pull some of them into the seats. He has a solid idea of the zone and feel to hit, although he has just average bat speed and succeeds more on pure strength, even when he overswings, often wrapping his bat and getting very long to try to launch something. He plays third base now, but the consensus from scouts is that he'll end up at first. There's a good starter kit here for a No. 4 or 5 hitter, a 25- to 30-homer guy with a solid OBP but maybe not as much average as you would want from a No. 2 or 3 hitter, enough for a regular or more even at first.

Writing for TheCardinalNation.comDerek Shore had this report:

From a scouting perspective, evaluators said Montero stands out for his “special” hand-eye coordination. He shows plus raw power in batting practice, pulling balls for home runs and hitting plenty of doubles to right field. Scouts expect him to grow into all-fields home run power down the road.

Scouts said Montero struggles against pitchers with a plan of attack, but his hand-eye coordination, bat speed and barrel control gives him a chance to develop into a plus hitter with plus power.

One scout compared him to a smaller-sized Miguel Sano.

Maddux is talking about Martinez pitching out of the pen this year. I'm REALLY hoping this is some strategy to motivate Carlos because he needs to be starting.

Agreed. He's being paid as a starter (even if it's at a bargain rate)...

He's perfectly capable of it, as we've all seen...

Carlos Martinez will be on a no-throw program for two weeks due in order to strengthen his shoulder.

Not the best news after his arm issues last season, but the good news is that an MRI taken Monday showed no structural damage in the shoulder. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Martinez will be re-evaluated on March 5 for a possible return to his throwing program. Even if there aren't any hiccups, Opening Day could be in question
