I don't love this. It should've been Young.

One has injury issues. The other doesn't. Sure Young is 4 years younger, but if his knee never keeps up, that would've been a rough move

You guys really need to get your GM, Coach, and QB on the same timeline, because right now they keep intertwining regimes and it's leaving you stuck without a clear vision for success. Whenever you guys wind up having turnover again in management, you need to clean house because this is a desperate move. The price you're paying isn't outrageous, but given where Fields is at, the move doesn't work with your time line that well. Hopefully you guys still follow through with taking Caleb Williams and he can ball out early and often.

Why would the Bears ever do something that smart?

In all seriousness, this isn't desperate. Sweat isn't even in his prime yet and the Bears have 5.5 sacks as a team. There aren't any DE's worth top 5 picks in this coming draft either. They know they need DL help in the worst way, and this has no bearing on Fields. He's not going to be here next year. Instead Poles and the new HC- Johnson or Harbaugh- will decide on Maye or Williams. That'll be as close as they'll ever get to having everyone on the same page

a second round pick? Is that not just insane?

It's not insane. Nobody at #35 or whatever will have the ability that Sweat does

If history holds and repeats:

We won't fire anyone at end of year.  We will draft Caleb and Flus will get one year with him.  Coaching staff doesn't want to throw Caleb to the wolves, so they limit his offseason reps and bring in a veteran to ease him in.  Vet gets hurt and Caleb gets thrown to wolves anyway without the benefit of offseason reps and starter preparation.  Then coaching staff gets fired at end of next year as criticism gets too be too much for ownership.   Wasting Caleb's first year of experience.

We look for a coach who wants to coach Caleb.   We hire either a defensive coach or more likely since we just did that a first time HC who is the hot OC name.  Some guy who had 1 good year with a loaded team under a good offensive HC.  Or a college coach with little pro experience.

Caleb will have to start over with a new OC and still play bad in year 2 being essentially a rookie.  Then the fan base, rabid for a winning season and tired of being patient will then turn on him and break him mentally.

Caleb, the can't miss prospect, will then be the latest QB not to make it in Chicago.

If they are shooting for a 1st- which I highly doubt they get for Johnson- hopefully it's with Dallas. SF's pick will definitely be in the 20's whereas there's always a possibility the wheels fall off in Dallas and they somehow miss the playoffs.

If any team trades for Johnson it will most likely be the 49ers.  They desperately need help on defense and they don't value draft picks that much so they may be willing to give up a second for him.

It sounds so foolish when you say it out loud.

Don't like the trade, nothing against the player, but what exactly does the GM think they're doing this season?

Without paying attention to the context of the season, I like it.  In the grand scheme of things, however, I don't like that this team is trying to improve at this point. Sweat on his own isn't likely to win the Bears more games, but at this point, the season is over, and I'm fully behind tanking it, and this is a step away from that.  I also would be curious to see what his contract extension will be.

ok but to be fair, Mitch Trubisky had bust written all over him. I won't say the same for Fields though.

Our fan base is so stupid.  Caller into ESPN1000 crying about how Sweat doesn’t improve the team and you gave up a pick that would undoubtedly make the team better. Bet the same guy cries when we trade JJ for a pick.

I don't know why the fans complained about this trade....  a 33rd DE pick is not better than Sweat!

It would make the defense better if CB Johnson somehow signs a new contract.

Other side of coin for Flus is now you have signed or traded for on defense in last two years:

Jones, Sweat, Billings, Ngakoue, Edwards and Edmunds.

Then you used early picks on Brisker, Gordon and Stevenson.  And Pickens and Dexter.

That is a lot of investment capital on defense.  And our defense currently sucks.
