A lay person would realize if there was truly mutual interest at whatever price, Cousins and Minny would be working on a deal.

Cousins: "That's kind of our attitude [waiting]. We do have a lot of work to do between September and February and when it gets to February and March, now we kind of are past it and it's like, all right, we hired an agent. The team has its role. Let's just see what happens and we kind of become like everybody else."

eh. what does Kirk know about the timing of his own business dealings and contracts?

During an live report Sunday morning, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said the Vikings would like to keep Kirk Cousins by signing him to a new contract but the team is also "examining all options" in the event Cousins lands elsewhere in free agency:

"My anticipation is that Cousins will have a strong market even at age 35 coming off a torn Achilles. Minnesota is examining all options in the event that Cousins could end up landing elsewhere. If in fact, the price tag goes too high, the Vikings would likely pursue a more economical veteran."

Other names such as Las Vegas's Jimmy Garoppolo, Atlanta's Desmond Ridder and Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield could also be on the move but the one name Pelissero connected with the Vikings is current San Francisco 49ers backup Sam Darnold.

Kirk’s quote above goes with what I said. If there was mutual interest they’d be working on a deal. The waiting game may be happening because one side might not be fully on board.

I appreciate that potential reports are now being put out from the Minny side, saying they’d like to keep Kirk and are examining all options. Basically saying anything is possible.

The “legal tampering” phase of free agency begins on March 11th, so if Minnesota is interested in re-signing Cousins, it likely has to do it at least a few days before Cousins sees the light of the open market. Some fans have held out hope that Cousins would accept a “hometown discount,” while others recognize his market value, which is around $45 million annually.

The Vikings encountered a somewhat similar situation to Cousins’ with Case Keenum in 2018, and that news surfaced on February 26th, 2018 — that Keenum was not in the organization’s plans after he helped guide Minnesota to the NFC Championship. There is a chance that word is leaked to the press before March about Cousins’ fate in Minnesota.

Yet, according to Cousins, it’s a March thing. He told Sky Sports about two weeks ago, “Many people who ask including friends and family are surprised conversations don’t really begin until March.”

Kirk brings out a SF and KC bag. But i didn’t see a Minny bag.

oh good gawd...

perhaps he's a respectful, and even humble, guy who didn't want to detract from the game between the two best teams.

Which tells me we'll have a clearer picture of what will happen for the season on Pi Day.  If he's not extended before then, he gone...

If the Vikings are going to re-sign Cousins — which of course requires both sides to agree on a deal — they will get it done before the new league year begins. Otherwise, the entirety of the salary cap damage from those four void years ($28.5 million) will hit the Vikings' cap in 2024.

They might decide to let Cousins walk, in which case that $28.5 million would hit the cap. But they wouldn't let that date pass and then work to sign him afterward. It just wouldn't make sense from a structural standpoint.

So by March 13, we should know whether Cousins is back or not. And that decision — which has pros and cons on both sides — will clarify what the Vikings are going to do in the draft.

Yes and no. Getting a deal done before his current contract voids certainly gives them the most flexibility in creating cap space for 2024. But, given his age, how much money should they kick down the road into void years?

If they don't kick the $28MM from Cousins' current contract down the road further, they can always kick $28MM down the road in other ways.  I agree that it is most likely they would do it earlier for maximum flexibility, but I don't think they absolutely have to.  There are so many ways to manipulate the cap numbers of a given year they can survive without kicking that particular $28MM down the road and still sign Cousins later if they had to.
