They had a few things break in their favor, mostly the weather in most of the country. People probably chose to stay home where it was warm rather than venture out for their normal Saturday night out.

Six bucks for a football game vs. 100 or 200 n a night out. Throw in a DoorDash order than they are still ahead of the curve.

It's one of those things that people were mad about this year that will seem totally normal 5 years from now.

For anyone hoping the Peacock thing would fall flat, and the NFL would abandon the idea

Comparing it to Chargers vs Jacksonville is interesting.   Might be 2 of the smallest fanbases in the league.

Just a matter of going to worst case numbers from a tradition broadcast vs the streaming model.  It's a huge win for NBC/Peacock.  No way around it.

Was the chargers vs jags game Saturday night?  How does it compare to prior seasons?

Not sure.  Not my point.  It was under the year prior worst drawing game of that weekend.

Matching traditional OTA broadcast numbers was never the goal.  It was always expected that streaming numbers would be significantly lower than OTA broadcast numbers.  In fact, it was generally expected that the KC/MIA game would be the least watched playoff game of the modern playoff era.  It wasn't anywhere close to that bad.  The 23M viewers for KC/MIA is a home run for NBC/Peacock, and pretty much guarantees that the streaming model for the playoffs is here to stay.

Will Peacock’s exclusive NFL playoff game be the least-watched ever?

No NFL playoff game has averaged fewer than 20 million viewers since 2007 and no game has fallen below the 19 million mark since the current playoff scheduling format began in the 2002-03 season.

AFC Wild Card: Dolphins-Chiefs (8:15p Sat Peacock). Prediction: 17.42M viewers (including over-the-air simulcasts in Miami and Kansas City).

You have to remember that the networks have already signed the contract with the league.  Now it's up to the networks to make sure their NFL contracts are as profitable as possible on their end.  This is part of how they do it.
