There were heavy reports that the Raiders were interested in Penix. The Broncos and Vikings both picked QBs within 4 picks of ATL taking one. Who's to say one of those teams had Penix higher on their draft board but never got the opportunity to take him?

Imagine you're the falcons and YOUR guy is right there at your pick, you trade down one spot because "they already took their qb" and then Poles turns around and trades it to LV for their 2nd/4th and future 3rd because ATL wouldn't have made that trade to LV. Then ATL is sitting there with their extra future 4th but without their top choice of remaining QB.

Regardless of if the pick was good or not (heavy argument against that reasoning) i'm ok with their process to make sure they get their guy. The Carter/Wright trade last year worked because we knew they were getting Carter because Phillys window is "acquire guys to put us over the top" whereas Poles is/was in "more darts on target"

I’m just trying to figure out why my quote from last week about Elon’s porn bot Twitter got quoted here lol.

To your point (which is a good one btw), I wouldn’t have any issue with the Falcons draft process if I were one of their fans. Your guy is your guy and he’s there at your pick, then pick him. I’d never fault that. I would have a MASSIVE issue with the roster construction philosophy and player evaluation though. If you’re THAT high on Penix then the Cousins contract is a bad one, and if you see Penix as a guy who should sit 2 years before seeing the field then he’s not worth the 8th pick.

So then you should have a problem with the draft process, right? Your second point contradicts your first. You should have an issue with their draft process if you have Cousins for 2 years and thus Penix will sit for 2 years- barring injury. In a vacuum, if he's your guy, go take him, but not if you just gave a guy who's plays the same spot that much money

If Bears are calling you, you know why.

It's because they want Odunze.  Not because they want to trade with someone else.

You make a good point though.   It could theoretically play out like so:  Bears trade with Atl with intent to draft Odunze.  Then as soon as they make the trade LV calls Poles and makes an offer he can't refuse.

So thinking is why risk that possible scenario for a 4th rounder?

But if I am Atl GM I ask for assurances before saying no.  Who are you taking?  Would you trade the pick to someone else?

Maybe he won't answer.  Then you can just say no or you play the probabilities that they are trading up to take a player - most likely Odunze.

Would LV have made a snap decision to trade up with Bears and acted that quickly?  How fast would Poles have turned that card in for Odunze before they could?  Probably pretty fast.

LV probably has no idea Atl wants Penix at this time.  A trade down would have thrown them more.

If LV did want Penix they probably think they have a good chance of getting him at 13.  Maybe they didn't even want him.

I think 98 or 99% chance Atl gets the 4th rounder and Penix.  Few thought he was going top 10 in first place.   I take the gamble.

Atl thinks they are going to do a long term baton handoff just like GB did with Rodgers from Favre and Love from Rodgers.

I admire the confidence, but I think its far more likely they just cut their own throats (jobwise).  This is NFL - not for long.

Once you go big money on a 35 year old FA QB you (the current Coaches and GM)  have to win with that guy within next 2 years.   You can't just throw away a top 10 pick for some future after he is gone.  Jets aren't doing that.  It is madness.

Because, maybe it is right thing to do theoretically, but if 35 year old big money QB doesn't win soon that future you planned for won't include you.

Unless Penix steps in and saves the day like Purdy did for 49ers after Trey Lance trade debacle.  What are odds of that happening?

I just meant I agree with them following their board on draft day. I didn’t word that particularly well. The stuff leading up to that point is where the issues are.

Imagine tackling this guy.  Look at him. LOL.  This is why I passed on playing college football.  Even D2 or D3 not that I had any D1 offers.  It wasn't worth what it does to you body if you have no chance to go pro or aren't getting an expensive University fully paid for.  I was sore on Sat. mornings in HS.

I remember coaching youth football in my 20s and I was coaching with this guy who played semi-pro.  He wanted me to get back in shape and come be a player coach for his team.  Play LB.

Then he is telling me about their new RB.  He goes he is 6'2 and 240 and runs a 4.4!

I said,  "thanks, but pass."  Going to work every day with a sore neck making an $100 extra a week is tempting.  But I turned it down.

who knows. maybe there's a previously talked about deal with LV that's "if X is on the board, we'll do this" then they call and say "hey, we think atl is gonna take our guy but wont trade with us. can you swap with them - they wont think you're taking a qb. we'll throw in a sweetener"

even if Rome goes off the board before we would have picked at #13 in that scenario (with picks in 2nd/4th this year coming back and 3rd next year) - i'm wouldn't have complained if in that scenario we grabed Bowers at #13, Frazier in the 2nd - plus had that bonus 4th to not trade our future 4th, and a 2025 3rd.

the draft is full of "what ifs" and butterfly affects. ATL took the player they wanted and didn't feel like the chance of not getting him was worth a future 4. seems simple even though everyone is seemingly ****ting on them..

I was shocked at how brutal DIII practices were. I was more sore after most practices than I was after any HS game. To go through a fill season in the NFL? Damn that would suck lol.

But as for the pick since you took the Bus, I'll go Jalen Hurts if I get the tush push and that OL. Otherwise I'll throw Payton out as my Homer pick, or if counting FBs I'd happily hand off to Mike Alstott.
