Yes, but it's also in a vacuum....how does it compare to GB historically, and is it worse/better than the rest of the league?

No better, no worse, whether in GB's history or league-wide. The bottom half of the depth chart is akin to a landslide in terms of stability no matter what team you look at. Let's take the '96 Packers for an example, and how awesome they were at Special Teams compared to the NFL that year. That was a unit that underwent changes almost wholesale throughout the season, and they had several players who joined the active roster real late in the season, and even had an early replacement issue with their longsnapper positions(a guy named Mike Archer started the season in that role, and by SB XXXI was done by a tandem of Jeff Dellenbach and Mark Chmura). And in the off-season, famously, Desmond Howard left for Oakland. Maaaybe three or four stalwarts remained on the roster playing ST snaps off the top of my head, and I'm probably forgetting a couple of others.

Random thoughts:

  1. Don't think we lost anybody invaluable.
  2. I'll be surprised if more than one of our cuts gets claimed.
  3. So I assume we'll have our picks for the practice squad.
  4. Sixteen practice-squad spots, between injuries and callups, a lot of opportunities for those guys.
  5. A little surprised that they kept all three of Dillard, Glover, and Telfort over Johnson.  10 OL?
  6. Shocked that Lloyd didn't go IR.  Happily so.
  7. Shocked that they only put Ford on the IR designated-to-return list.  If it seemed hard to keep somebody they really liked, they could have easily used that for somebody, whether Lloyd or Morgan or somebody else.
  8. I'm totally fine with Joseph.  Hope he does well.
  9. Given how many callups come from PS, will be interesting to see who fills out the 69-man roster.

Yeah, people who get paid to write about ball. Give us an article on special teams turnover.

Idk. What i can tell you, which i find pretty interesting, is that we were last in league in touchback %. By a healthy margin as well, 57% of our kicks were returned for a 23.8 yad average.. next most was Tennessee with 53%. The only 2 teams who had opposing squads return it against them more than half the time.

Only 4 TDs scored on kickoffs last year. None against us.

So we get a lot of opportunities to make some plays on kickoff.. thats for sure.

Inversely we didnt punt the ball often and when we did we werent particularly good at it. Net yardage of 39.7 good for 4th lowest in the league on the 7th fewest punts. Consistent with that only 23 returns against(7th fewest) and we let up 1 TD.

Whelan will be dealin' this year for the few times we have to punt.  May he have some luck  of the Irish with the wind forever at his back.  Actually the one bright spot from the specialist debacle we are currently working through.

Anybody know how many of our practice squad guys played in games last year?

I think eight of the initial PS Roster; Patrick Taylor, Bo Melton, Henry Pearson, Kristian Welch, Corey Ballentine, Innes Gaines, Benny Sapp(the Third), and Kiondre Thomas.

The new kickoff rules will almost certainly change how the reps are distributed.

Anderson will replace Leavitt

Sims will replace Deguara

Oladapo will replace Owens

Wilson and Balentine is still here

Glover will probably take over Yosh

Hopper is probably taking Welch snaps

Not sure about Patrick Taylor, maybe Evan Willams?

Edgerrin Cooper played a lot of special teams in College - 580 ST snaps playing on all coverage units

He and the new safeties all could play a role there. Quick, solid speed, and don’t mind getting dirty are all good traits on ST. Rookies need to contribute there until they are solidified as starters and even then they might have to support some units.

A question for long time Packers fans, whenever the backup QB situation got dicey, Packers fans, generally speaking, always clamour for an experienced QB.

Has that ever happened? fulfill the fans wishes by bringing in an experienced QB? I feel like they always bring in a project backup QB.

Kizer and Willis are the most recent ones I remember.

They chose to keep Boyle as #2 rather than finding someone better and more experienced.

When Rodgers got injured Hundley became our starting QB and we brought in some random nobody as backup.

It seems the Packers front office MO is to bring in young backup QB to develop and this doesn't appear to have changed under Gute. If that is the case then why are we wasting our breath screaming for an experienced backup when the evidence suggest otherwise? 🤣

How soon you forget the gospel of Matty Flynn. The second coming of our prodigal son was not really glorious, but it won us a game to help get 12 back in time to break the Bears in a final game to win the division.
