Let’s say Bell is gone...

Free Agent RB for 2018:

Carlos Hyde, RB, 49ers. Age: 27. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
Hyde has averaged better than four yards per carry throughout his career despite never running behind a strong offensive line. He has also been paired with mostly terrible quarterbacks throughout his time in San Francisco. Hyde has the potential to explode in the right situation!

Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns. Age: 25. star.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Crowell has a lot of natural talent, and he flashed it early in 2016 before the Browns had offensive line issues. However, he was a big disappointment this past season, failing to do anything behind an excellent front. Imagine him rejuvenated after leaving the Browns...

Thomas Rawls (RFA), RB, Seahawks. Age: 25. star.gifstar.gif
Thomas Rawls showed tremendous potential as a rookie, rushing for 830 yards on a 5.6 YPC carry. Injuries and lethargy have hurt him in the past two seasons, but he has potential to bounce back to 2015 form.

Orleans Darkwa, RB, Giants. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gif
None of the Giants' running backs were any good this past season, but Orleans Darkwa was the best of the bunch, averaging 4.3 yards per carry despite some horrific blocking in front of him.

After this it falls way off....

Steelers just restructured Tuitt's and DeCastro's contracts and freed up $13m in cap space.    New deal could be imminent, even though Im not particularly thrilled about paying Bell the type of money he is about to get.    IMO, the money could be better spent elsewhere.

If you want another back scoop up guy that can fill a certain role where you think you're deficient. Bell can do it all. Conner is a great backup. Those two alone you're solid at the position. Any of these bums they try and put in there like Toussaint don't really add value to the team. If you want to add value I'd add a backup specialist in either a receiving threat or power back.

As pure luxuries, I like Justin Jackson from 2016 - didn't see him much this year. And I like Bo Scarbrough as day three picks.

probably not the same as the thread itself but I'll say it anyway.

What if we tag then trade him? Bell is a low risk comparing to the Redskins. If so, how much would you trade him for? Teams with high salary cap actually have a need for the RB. (Psst, Browns- trade your this year 2nd round and next year 1st round for him).

Anyway back to the point. If I'm the FO, I'm letting him walk and sign Tre Boston (he'll command more than Mike Mitchell) and Duke Johnson, he's a perfect complimentary back to Connor. Then I'll see how much Landry is commanding.

These guys are the best FAs out there if, as the title says, Bell is gone. Not to be his backup...

Not really - we don't have Bill Belichick. He can get away with it. Our coaching staff cannot

Sorry, but this is nonsense.

Obviously, Tomlin isnt remotely close to Belichick, but who the hell is?

Beyond that, Im struggling to see your point here.   The Patriots usually have effective run games, but their run games arent special.   its not like they are plucking RBs off the street and having elite run games.    They are just effective.   Last time I checked, when Bell went down, a 32 year old everyone thought was washed up came in and didnt miss a beat.    James Conner and even Fitzgerald Toussiant showed the ability to be effective behind our OLine.  As good as Bell is capable of being, he was a pretty average runner most of 2017.   His ability in the passing game is what we would miss, and we could absolutely survive that as well.

And as far as why the Patriots running game works with no names....its not just Belichick...its a) the fact that they always have a pretty solid OLine and b) the guy under center who takes most of the attention away from the run game.

Another thing is....the thing about Belichick is he is smart enough not to pay a freaking RB an insane amount of money.     You claim our coaching staff cant get away with it....yet the last two times our team made the Superbowl, we had average at best run games.  We havent, however, been able to "Get away with" having mediocre defenses.

With that knowledge, a much more logical conclusion would be it would be wiser to NOT pay Bell, and instead use that money to try to improve the defense.    Some of you clamor for this staff to make decisions like Belichick would.   Well, paying Bell $16m a year isnt a decision Belichick would ever make.   He would let that player walk and instead replace him with a committee in the backfield, which would be very doable for us.

Bottom line....Im not completely opposed to keeping Bell, and if it happens, I wont be upset.   However, your claim that this team cant get away with not signing Bell is way off.     In fact, it could be argued that paying Bell the money he wants could actually hurt this teams chances over the next few years.

It's the simple fact that Belichick gets the most out of his talent by putting them in a position to succeed. The rotation of Lewis, White, and Burkhead was seamless. It was almost as if I knew what they were going to run when a certain back was in the game. How can Marvin Lewis not use Burkhead, in fact, cut him and Belichick can make him look like a player I want on my team. Their OL is not good. It's play calling. Yes, it's afraid of being torched by Brady that I'll give you 4 yards in the run game. Not too mention his audibles and short passing game that acts like a running game. Their short passing game is their running game - it has been for the last 15 years. The biggest problem on this team is Mike Tomlin who is protected by the Rooney rule. Maybe after this year they'll get it. How many times do you gotta lose to teams that pick in the top 10 before you get this. He plays homeboy. A long time ago he chose to be the players friends to gain trust, instead of being a great leader of men to gain their respect. That's why Tomlin is Mike, and **** LeBeau is Coach LeBeau.

Last time I checked, the Pats don't have a good OL. Here's the proof in the pudding and remember this team has gone to the Super Bowl eight times in this window. Here are the Pats OL in the last 15 years. Logan Mankins 6 time Pro Bowler, Matt Light '06, '07, '10, and Damien Woody 2002. And Mankins was thought so little of that he was given away. They don't have a good OL. It's Brady and coaching. We have more and get much less. That's coaching. Remember we had the same OL personnel with Kugler and then somehow Munchak with the same group got so much more out of them. Is this when you say, yeah, of course - Munchak. Yeah, that's coaching.

Belichick doesn't pay money for a RB because he can create Le'Veon Bell by using three players. Putting them in the right situations so they get Bell production. Why would I go to a five star restaurant to get steak and potatoes and pay $40 when I can go here for the same dish and just about the same damn thing for $18.99? That's what he's doing.

Last two Steelers Super Bowls:

2010 - Rashard Mendenhall 1200 yard rusher led the team. 13 TDs. 4th in the league in rushing. T-2nd in the NFL for TDs.

2008 - Parker and Moore combined for 1200+ yds and 10 TDs.

It would seem you are wrong here - again. Fact checking is great.

A logical conclusion would be to check facts before spewing them to save us from your generalizations that you preach as gospel. Here's one. Don't let the best RB in the league walk for free. If you wanna trade him - fine. Pay him - fine. I just don't think that I have the coaching to re-create Le'Veon Bell in three parts if he walks, and I'm not wasting a draft pick on RB when my defense sucks.

So, you want to not pay Bell and then sign free agents, which you must overpay, which we don't do, nor have had any success? How about a better solution of taking 7 defensive players in the draft? Instead of taking a 4th WR or 3rd RB or another 0% QB. These would be your free agent signings where you pay less with less competition. Much like that 32 year old you mentioned at the beginning. If you wanna help the team, then help where it's weakest. So you can stop complaining that you don't have a defense. Honestly how much better does this team have to get before the blame finally goes on coaching. We've had the most talent in the league for the last three years now.

Literally none of this disputes anything I said.

Im not going to continue debating these absurd comparisons to Belichick like Belichick is the norm.      We already know Tomlin isnt anywhere close to Belichick.    We all know Tomlin has his flaws.   The point that you (and others like you) either ignore or fail to grasp is that no other coach is remotely close to Belichick.     Even if we move on from Mike, clowns like you will be calling for the next coach to be fired soon after if they arent immediately dominating the league.

Their OLine is always solid BECAUSE of coaching.    Its not supremely talented, but they never have a terrible OLine.     Thats the point.

I know the facts, sweetheart.

Perhaps if you would stop looking at bulk stats without context and actually watch the games, you would know what you were talking about.   Knowing you though....probably not.

Both of those years, the run game was average at best.    We had a few games here and there where the run game was really good, but it wasnt consistently effective throughout the season.    In both years, our run game averaged less than 4 yards a carry.    Both years, they finished bottom half of the league in run game EFFICIENCY, which is more telling than bulk stats.

Little Chrissy, you preaching anything regarding "logic" is beyond comical.

And as I already pointed out, looking at bulk stats on ESPN isnt "fact checking".    I actually watched the games and remember the running games both seasons.      They were extremely inconsistent both years.

Yes....because its easy to trade a guy who isnt under contract.

And tagging and trading rarely ever happens....and its not the way the Steelers do business.

I just don't think that I have the coaching to re-create Le'Veon Bell in three parts if he walks, and I'm not wasting a draft pick on RB when my defense sucks.

Funny how you blatantly ignored that we were okay without him when we had DeAngelo.

His ability in the passing game will be missed, but its not irreplaceable either given the talent we have at WR.

The hardest thing to replace might be his ability to block in the backfield....but thats not worth the money that he wants.

Quote

So, you want to not pay Bell and then sign free agents, which you must overpay, which we don't do, nor have had any success?

I want them to spend the money more wisely than spending $15-17M a year on a freaking running back who has major maturity issues.  So yeah.

Quote

How about a better solution of taking 7 defensive players in the draft?

Thats not a better solution, nor is it going to help us "win now".

We need some veteran talent.   Not saying we should spend crazy money on a free agent, but some smart pickups COMBINED with a good draft could drastically help this defense.

Quote

Instead of taking a 4th WR or 3rd RB or another 0% QB.

None of which have I ever suggested doing.

And whether you or I like it or not, they will draft offense at some point.   They draft based on value at positions of need....not just straight need.

Quote

So you can stop complaining that you don't have a defense. Honestly how much better does this team have to get before the blame finally goes on coaching.

Stop complaining we dont have a defense?   Umm....no.     Thats a pretty big reason we havent gotten back to a Superbowl in recent years.   So, I think Ill keep on chanting that we need major defensive help, despite your "logic".

The bolded doesnt even make sense, but in regards to coaching, I think we have all admitted this team has some coaching issues many times.    Just because we arent all on the "Fire Tomlin" bandwagon doesnt mean we are ignoring coaching issues.      I said I wanted to see Haley and Lake replaced this offseason, and it happened, so I am content with that.    We will see how it works out.   Tomlin is signed through 2019.  I could see the Rooney's letting him walk after that if some things dont change.

Quote

We've had the most talent in the league for the last three years now.

On offense....okay.

On defense....we arent even top half in the league.  Heyward and Shazier are the only two consistently dependable guys we have had on defense in recent years, and one of them is now unlikely to ever play football again.

Try again.

Can sign Dion Lewis & Jamaal Charles for the less than the cost of Bell easily.  Jamaal Charles was more than fine and explosive behind that porous Oline and the horrible QB situation.

Jeremy Hill

Jerrick McKinnon

Damien Williams

All possibilities as far as free agents.

Draft Nick Chubb, Kallen Ballage, Reshard Penny.

I am not a fan of Royce Freeman.

Very likely that Bell will have an extremely productive 2018 but a significant fall off is common in the year following based on age and use. Signing him to a long term guaranteed contract is like buying a house in 2006.
