These things are still big projections though. It's hard for me to assume he'll be able to play a position he's never played because he's tenacious and works hard. He'll likely be able to do it, but it's completely reasonable to be skeptical. There aren't many ILB's that are as small as Griffin is. Doesn't mean there aren't guys that have done it, but he's not the prototype at any spot regardless of how many hands the dude has.

It's not hard to assume it once you watch the film and see his instincts. As for his size:

I absolutely loved his tape. Loved watching him tear apart Auburn in the "national championship" game. He's a nightmare to deal with, but I don't buy into the idea that he's not a tweener. He's never had to read guards. He's never had to react to quick traps. He's never had to disengage from OG's in the hole and make tackles. Could he do these things? Maybe, but it's still a question mark that remains unanswered. These unanswered question marks will likely keep him out of the 1st round regardless of whether or not his body has all the pieces and parts to it.

Those question marks didn't keep Haason Reddick or Deone Bucannon out of the first round.

From watching his bench, I thought they gave him a lot of benefit of the doubt in what counted as a clean rep, due to his prosthetic.

They give everyone the benefit of the doubt, there isn’t a strict rep the whole combine.

Bouncing, questionable lockouts, etc.

IMO none of it matters much.  Anyone who regularly lifts knows what a decent rep looks like and I didn’t see anything from him that didn’t look passable.

It is a great story, but in the end, Mayock's last comment was that he would be a solid special team's player, so we will just have to wait and see if he can be much more than that???

Mayock is a fool.

thought Mayock's comment was mostlly about his size.  Not a lot of 227 lb linebackers make an immediate impact on defense in the NFL.  It may turn out that Griffin is best suited to one of those "hybrid safety/backers" that were all the rage when S'ua Cravens was in the draft, but guys take some time to develop at that "position."  With Griffin at least you can be pretty sure he's going to work at it really hard.

Eh, there’s a role for that type of guy on passing downs for every team in the league IMO.

227 isn’t that small.  He’s definitely big enough to play in sub packages and the weak side.  If Deone Buchannon is big enough...

Nah, honestly people say this, but just because a guy's fast doesn't make him a "SS hybrid" player.  He's fast, but he's also not all that quick. You could see it with his 40, he gets off the blocks slow and then his finishing speed was insane.

He actually reminds me of a mix between Telvin Smith and Jatavis Brown (both of whom tested horribly in the agility drills for their size/how fast they are).  He's got Telvin's leadership, and instincts, but matches Brown's body type and speed to the football.  He's definitely got questionable traits, but I think if you leave him at the Will and just let him flow to the ball, and chase down plays on the outside, he's going to be a beast.  I don't see a team trying to make him a pass rusher, but will probably blitz him enough.  He's got the speed, but not the bent or power conversion to be an edge rusher/PR specialist.  You have to drop him out and let him chase plays in front of him, trying to play anything behind him is not going to go well.

I was under the impression he was already mid round prospect prior to the combine, and absolutely would get a fair shot in the NFL. After that combine I imagine the real question is just how high will he go. His size is not an issue in modern NFL.

I wonder if he can turn that stump into an advantage. Due it's shape and smaller surface area, he can likely apply more PSI on the football itself than anyone else. Think the peanut punch, but better. That would be lethal if he got it down to even half of the degree Tillman did. Also in coverage, I would think refs rely a great deal on the jersey's movements when calling defensive holding, and that wouldn't be a problem for him, but he could still mimic the effects of defensive holding (slowing down receiver, throwing off timing) by giving WRs/TEs a good jab with it. Normally your hands give away what you're trying to do, whether it's grab, jam, redirect, so it would not be easy to tell whether he'd just be placing his left arm on the WR legally for tracking or actually jamming them up.... In all likelihood it's an absolute non-factor, whether as a disadvantage or an advantage, but interesting to brain storm.
