Mike Pettine Defense

From today's OTA via PackerNews:

Apparently Pettine was not duly impressed with the energy and preparation

"Pettine, with his bald head, dark shades and “Blunt Force Trauma” nickname, has an intensity that matches his demeanor. He also has a reputation for not shying from confrontation when warranted. So it was Monday.

Almost a third of the way through a 30-minute walkthrough to close the final open organized team activities session, Pettine, unhappy with his players’ attention to detail, stopped the drill. He called them into a huddle on the field, resetting their focus for the final 20 minutes."

His nickname is BFT ? That's awesome for a DC

From Packer Wire

More acclaim for DL Kenny Clark

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2018/06/03/pff-packers-dl-kenny-clark-nearing-elite-status/

From PFF’s Austin Gayle:

"The former UCLA standout and 2016 first-rounder flew under the radar as one of the league’s best nose tackles this past season, as he earned a career-high 87.9 overall grade to rank 13th among qualifying interior defenders. He also ranked 12th in run-stop percentage (9.1) and tied for seventh in pass-rush productivity (7.5) among qualifying defensive tackles"

Daniels + Clark + Big Mo is a very talented DL for Mike Pettine to work with

I've got high hopes for Adams as well and Lowry is solid depth.

This seems fine in theory, however, we don't have David Harris or Bart Scott. Those two were animals when they played for Pettine during those years. Conversely, despite what we may think about Ryan and Martinez overall, both are fairly weak in the blitzing/rushing department. Ideally, your best bet to generate a consistent rush from an ILB would be Matthews, but we are lacking in depth at EDGE to move Clay inside too often. Just hope Pettine has the pieces he needs.

Conversely, our starting edge rushers are MUCH better than the ones on the Jets. Totally different personnel

Clay will probably have the majority of his sacks rushing from the ILB position this year based off that information.

That makes me worry a little bit tbh. The opportunity cost of putting Clay at ILB and sitting Ryan and playing a different edge player, and having ryan and martinez at ilb and clay on the edge is a lot imo.

Clay is gonna be moved around, it makes it harder for the OL to target him. It also means he's lined up an inch away from a less athletic C or OG instead of a yard plus away from the fast-footed OTs who engulf him with their wingspan. It also makes it harder on the opposing OTs because they have to study and prepare for several rushers instead of just Matthews/ Perry

Wave upon wave of demented avengers rushing cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream...

I am guessing that from Pettine's view, Clay playing some snaps lined up inside isn't a problem, its part of the solution.

I've never really looked into it, but how often did we blitz with Martinez and Ryan?

87% of their snaps were blitzes in 2017. Really disappointing how little they got to the QB.

Just kidding. It's Friday and I'm not going to look up that stat. But have a great weekend everybody!

from PackersNews

The shuffling of Jones from deep safety to box safety to a position mirroring a dime linebacker speaks to the fluidity of Pettine’s defense.

Expect players like Clay Matthews and rookie Oren Burks to have similar, multi-faceted job descriptions in the months to come.

“It really depends on the job,” Pettine said. “When we go to a subpackage where we have five DBs on the field, a lot of times that sixth position — Oren Burks plays that as well — it’s our dime spot. In the history of the system, we’ve had guys that have had safety backgrounds play it, linebackers. It just depends on what jobs you’re doing. I’ve always liked having a guy with a safety skillset there, so now you essentially have three safeties on the field and you can kind of be interchangeable and trade jobs out just so it’s not easy for an offense to identify who’s who.

“To answer the question (about Josh Jones), is he a safety or is he a linebacker? (The answer) is yes. He’s doing both types of jobs but primarily when we put a DB in that spot, it’s typically in a passing situation.”
