Nice. I watched it on condensed play and didn't notice re: Gentry.  Was it late in game?  I am rooting for him.  Kind of like an under appreciated player (like Meredith) who makes good. No commentary in condensed and I was playing Clash Royale too in middle of night so I must have missed those plays.

I was thinking they wouldn't cut Wheaton because they paid him a lot to be here next two years and think highly of his him even though he has been out all camp and preseason.

Tough to evaluate any WRs without being at practices and QB play in games from Glennon has been subpar.  You have limited pre season reps to see.

Also, you have zero OT depth. You are going to need at least one back up OT I would think.

___

An aside that may have made a kid like Gentry go undrafted when he clearly has draftable size, talent and film to back it up.  People just overlook some talent for whatever reason.  Gentry should have been drafted and he should have gotten more interest from bigger football schools and he should make the Bears.   I see it at every level of football from kids to pros.

For example on a personal level, a kid I coached for many years has run a 4.3 and low 4.4 at several major college camps this past summer.  He is 6-2 and 195 at 17 (I think he turned 18 by now) and is being currently overlooked by all major schools.  He was fastest kid at U of Iowa camp (I was told) and one of top kids at Penn State camp, I think he was top 2 to 5 in timed speed and fastest shuttle (I was told by close sources - I wasn't there, but I believe it).  Neither offered.  In fact no major college program has offered yet, though a lot of smaller schools have offered.  One scout from a smaller school went up to him at a camp and said I know you probably are thinking Alabama or USC, but hear what we have to offer.  He sheepishly told him no major school has offered at all.  He plays QB at a very large school and is a 4 year varsity starter and 2nd year QB, but can also play DB, RB or WR and is willing to change positions if they don't like him at QB.  Its baffling.

Why?  Several school scouts have said straight out and with candor that its tough to sell their (usually white) coach on a non-black skill player - not going to throw anyone under bus here as I appreciate their honesty.  So its not like I am speculating here and inserting my own bias because I like and know the kid.  Some will just honestly tell you that is the fact of the matter.   They also said once one school offers most others will follow suit because they don't want to miss out, but they don't want to be first because they don't want to be alone and wrong.  Scouts also literally don't believe the times they themselves are recording.  Why?  You be the judge, I think its obvious, I know that he has been made to re run 40 at different camps at least twice and he proceeded to run low 4.4 both times.  No one else was asked to re run because of a fast time.  This even though he runs verifiable really fast times in track too, I believe his best is 10.7 or 10.6 this past season (it might be faster or a little slower I am going off what people told to me) in 100 and I know for for fact he has had near 10 sec splits in 4x100 because I was there for that meet and saw the timer.  He ran 11 secs flat 100 in 8th grade meet that I personally saw with an electronic timer.  I imagine he has gotten faster since the 8th grade so 10.7 or faster is easy to believe.   He doesn't even want to run track I don't think, he does it so there is an objective record that he is actually fast and thought it would help get a football scholarship.

Some kids on his team were suspended before state track meet, but they had fastest 4x100 team in state by time up to that point this last season.  All this puts him in top 1% of country in terms of speed and he is a football first kid, not a track kid.  You are telling me no major conference school can use him?  Maybe he is too small or weak.  But his lifting numbers are off the charts too.  I have personally seen him clean or whatever you call it 400+ years ago.  No idea what he does now.  Do I think he is a pro athlete?  Probably not, few are, but he is certainly good enough for college football.  No doubt in my mind and the numbers objectively prove it. He's bigger, faster and stronger than most skill players on most Big 10 teams right now in his upcoming senior year of h.s.

But no one has bothered to go to a track meet to find talent or verify he is fast.   How many kids in basketball and baseball get overlooked as potential football players as well?  I bet I could build a good program with overlooked players given time and resources for development.  I once saw a 6-7 240 lb h.s. kid  back around 1990ish dunk from free throw line in a dunk contest held at half time of state championship game (this isn't a black/white thing - theeeennnnnn why mention race at all?).  He didn't get a basketball scholarship, fine perhaps he couldn't dribble or shoot,.  But, one would think a college football team could find a use for an athlete with that kind of size and athletic ability.  Nope.  Never heard of him, didn't care so we will never know what could have been as that kid never went to college or at least never played sports in college.

Another example of what I am talking about at high school level involves another kid I know who got hurt in baseball and didn't play football for several years.  This is an outstanding high school level athlete (and probably a good/decent college level athlete as well to be honest given the opportunity), one of very best athletes I ever coached and I coached a lot of really good ones over 20 years or so.  A lot of people told his new hs coaches he was really good and they should take a good look at him (I don't get involved in that), but they didn't know him and they didn't listen to those people.  He got in games just a handful of times last year.  I went to two games last season and he had 2 reps, both instant long TD catches and then he was taken out of game not to return after each instance.  So he was 2 for 2 with 60+ yard average in game reps I personally witnessed and got no further opportunities?   What do you have to do?  What more can you do?  The decision making on personnel at any level is just baffling sometimes.  This season I am told he is now a two way starter and one of top 2 players on team, which is great, but I find it really hard to believe he wasn't one of best 22 last season as a junior and couldn't make it on the field  He just got overlooked by his hs staff for whatever reason in 2016.

That's interesting stuff, dl! I think athletes unfortunately will always slip through the cracks -- for whatever reason -- and I'm sure human/personal bias will always play a role.

I like Tanner, I think he's a talented WR, I just worry about his long speed/ability to get separation. He's got an outstanding ability to fight for 50/50 balls, but with an accurate QB like Mitch I want someone who can win at the LOS and with quickness/route running.

Not a lot of difference in our rosters, but looking at yours and mine the Bears OT and even the OL depth is pretty ugly.

I just don't see them cutting Miller when healthy he offers way more than any other TE, if Shaheen shows something more than falling over in the next two games I could be comfortable with cutting him but he doesn't make much as it is.

Yes Houston makes a lot of money but with how the injuries have hit the Bears the last few season I think he needs to stay this season as a back up though..

Wheaton is a tough call just because they gave him so much money for one year, my last spot was down to him and Carey and I just think Carey offers more on STs than Wheaton.

And about the OT depth I know its very thin but they don't have anyone there right now anyways, I am hoping they pick up some one after cuts happen and then they can let go of Richardson and put Morgan on the practice squad after the season starts.

-I think Christian Jones ability to play OLB means you don't have to force someone on to the roster.

-McPhee goes on PUP and then maybe IR.

-Deon Bush looks lost, Langford hasn't played.

-You can't cut Houston, they have nothing behind Young.

QB - Glennon, Sanchez, Trubisky

HB - Howard, Cohen, Cunningham

FB - Burton/Stevenson (I'd have them both play a lot in the next two games, and get a winner

WR - Meredith, White, Wright, Cruz, Gentry, Wheaton

TE - Miller, Sims, Shaheen

LT - Leno

LG - Long

C- Whitehair, Grasu

RG - Sitton, Morgan (If a guard goes down Grasu moves up first)

RT - Massie, Compton (look for upgrade in cuts)

LE - Hicks, Howard

NT - Goldman, Jenkins

RE - Bullard, RRH

LOLB - Floyd,

Mike - Freeman, Kwitakowski

Jack - Trevathan, Timu

ROLB - McPhee, Young, Houston, Acho (Interchangeable with LOLB)

CB - Amukamara, Fuller, Cooper,

NB - Callahan/LeBlanc

FS - Jackson, Hall/Houson-Carson (HC is also 6th CB)

SS - Demps, Amos

K - Barth

P- O'Donnell

LS - Scales

Kickoff Specialist - Aguayo (he's young and showed huge upside in college, maybe getting to fix whatever his issue is will help. Kickers can play forever, so one year of redshirting would be worth it IMO. At worse you can help you defense as Barth is atrocious at kickoffs)

Practice Squad

HB - Carey

FB - Stevenson (if he loses battle)

TE - Brown

WR - Braverman

OL - Poehls (mountain of a man, get him down 20 pounds and he might be a pretty solid reserve at G)

QB - Shaw

I get why some of you guys don't want to cut both Miller an Houston but here is my thinking behind it...

With Miller we have seen that this team is going to use a lot of 12 personal and run a lot of off tackle zone run plays...for that you need TEs who can block...there is a reason we signed Sims and drafted Shaheen both at around 270lbs...Miller's weakest part of his game is blocking and does he offer so much more as a #3/flex than Daniel Brown at a fraction of the cost and can he play special teams like Brown?...

Houston is nothing more than a former somewhat big name free agent signing...I get we don't have much behind Floyd & Young at OLB with McPhee being hurt but that is no excuse for keeping a guy who is ineffective and being way overpaid for what he offers...he is a one tricky pony who can't line up anywhere else or play on teams...I would cut him tomorrow and bring in some UDFA at this point and give him a shot...then look for cuts around the league.

I could also see Miller being gone, but for other reasons in addition to MM90's. At 32, he's the oldest guy on offense, and the team isn't exactly being shy about its youth moment on that side of the ball. The next oldest guy on offense would be Cruz at 30, I think, and he's not a lock for the roster either (though I think he makes it). By the time Trubisky would really start coming into his own, Miller would have aged out of the league. If this is really a developmental year and we're not seriously looking at a playoff push, I don't much see the point of keeping an aging, injury-prone TE on the roster when we could be giving Shaheen his snaps. I'm about 50/50 on his release - I'm not expecting it, but it wouldn't surprise me, either.

I think Roy Robertson-Harris makes the 53. He seems to be the team's special project, and it paid dividends last game. If he has one more showing like he did against the Cardinals, I think he's a lock.

I don't know that we keep an FB on the roster. I really want to - look at what the Patriots were able to do with an FB last year - but we haven't been showing much of it in the preseason. Maybe that doesn't indicate anything, though.
