In any event, the sales were down for both tickets and toys and just about everything else for The Last Jedi, and there are many reasons behind it.  The big one is the steaming dump that was taken on the story that was established beforehand.  You can't expect fans and non-fans alike to talk about the movie for two years, and then make all of those talking points irrelevant without expecting to face some sort of backlash.  And it happened, and it's not been a good time for the franchise ever since- especially since it coincided with the lootbox disaster with Battlefront II

It wasn't just TLJ that was impacted, Solo essentially bombed because TLJ was so bad.

And Solo was a decent movie in it's own right.  I disliked adding another criminal faction to the Star Wars universe given how many there are already (and in Legends).  It's also clear what parts of the movie were from the original directors, and what was re-done and added by Ron Howard, but it's still a decent movie.  I also believe that they should be doing an episodic show around the characters that were portrayed by Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton.  They easily should've had more screen time.

The worst part of Solo was bringing Darth Maul back to life.

Eh.  His resurrection was part of canon probably before they sat down and started writing Solo.  If they don't have another movie that wraps up that arc, it will be very disappointing that they wasted that effort.  But right now I'll keep an open mind

Well, eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed that when Maul stood up to address Qi’ra at the end of Solo, the camera revealed some robotic limbs on his lower half. That’s because unbeknownst to Star Wars movie-only fans, Maul has been living out an entire post-Phantom chapter in two popular Lucasfilm animated series: The Clone Wars and Rebels. Here’s a look at him voiced, as he is in Solo, by Samuel Witwer:

So Rian Johnson screwed up the current villains so bad they had to start bringing old ones back from the dead?

Pretty much.

Had Kennedy focused on delivering an actual story with real fans of the series. For all the gripes that there may have been it probably would have been much better received.

But Disney bought this to make money, that is it. Iger gave Kennedy the reigns and so long as they are turning a profit that's all that counts, so since they have no real big baddy going into the 3rd they pretty much had too.

If they were going for another trilogy I would think they could have saved this series in a big way had they just used that trilogy to add on to this one and correct it with a real producer like Feige and a comprehensive story tying up all the plot holes and such of these 3 movies and make it a grand spectacle.
