OTA/Camp Observations 2019

On the topic of OLBs. From today's practice- https://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2019/8/1/20749949/ravens-training-camp-observations-8-1-lamar-jackson-hayden-hurst-seth-roberts-deshon-elliott-mcphee

On the defensive front, Pernell McPhee is emerging as a veteran leader who brings energy to the drills and holds his teammates accountable. Fellow veteran acquisition Shane Ray has also picked up his play in recent days, both pass rushing and in pass coverage. It was a strong day for the outside linebackers across the board, Matthew Judon stripped Nick Boyle of a reception in 1 vs 1 drills and Tim Williams earned a ‘sack’ during the full team portion. Furthermore, Tyus Bowser collected a ‘sack’ and later tipped a ball at the line that was caught by rookie Jaylon Ferguson for an interception.

The consensus seems to be that Gus Edwards is faster, more toned/slimmed, and has taken a step forward as a pass catcher. Love to hear it.

This is also interesting-

---Tyler Ervin, however, has been perhaps the greatest surprise of training camp thus far. Ervin has flashed electric playmaking potential on nearly every touch, he could be a major weapon if he makes the roster.---

A Tight End exploiting Jefferson in coverage, why I never...

This is why Jefferson shouldn't allowed to play any deep zone. He get caught and receivers get behind him, just like it happened several times last year.

You're wrong, and you should take in information from more outlets. Camp is a puzzle where observers put out what they see. You need to follow all of the observes to put together the puzzle. RSR specifically has done a great job following the EDGE groups' contributions in camp thus far. As I said, the only guy that has been knocked somewhat is Jaylon Ferguson. Looks like today he had a pick though, so things are moving in the right direction.

Or just follow Mike Preston to get the feeling, that the Ravens have nothing going for them and are vying for that number #1 pick in next years draft

Do we have room for him with Justice Hill already probably playing that role, though? For sure we're going to carry Ingram and one of Dixon/Edwards, that doesn't leave room for both Hill and Ervin.

I mean, RSR and those other smaller outlets report on stuff and that gets collected usually by BB or BR.com or Zrebiec or even Jamison Hensely. None of those outlets have made any indication Bowser has been a camp standout. I may be wrong, I hope I'm wrong because I'm a huge Bowser fan.

I mean I could be wrong, but I haven't heard Jeff Z or BaltimoreBeatdown or really anyone praise Bowser or say he's doing anything noticeable or anything to standout yet - and to me that's really telling, especially like I said for a guy who really has to stand out this year to even sniff the roster.

Do we really think Bowser in danger of not making the team? i guess it's possible if he just completely stinks it up during training camp but considering he's basically the only EDGE guy we have who isn't more or less a pure pass rushing specialist, I've been thinking of his spot on the team as being pretty safe.

You're wrong, and you should be encouraged. With the level of contact we're at right now and with our Tackles and Tackle depth, what's been said has been good. I'm happy with our OLB group.

Don't think so. If he's really that impressive he'll be in a battle with De'Lance for a PS spot. Unless Justice Hill stinks it up and gets the redshirt IR or something.

Plus he can be and has been used at ILB. And as I don't see us carrying more than 3 true LBs, he'll be even more important in that sense.

Jefferson has literally said in interviews that he had to learn and grow accustomed to things he'd never done before as a Safety when he came to Baltimore. Our pursuit of him remains eternally mysterious, but all we can do is hope he's stronger this year.

With Earl Thomas coming in, you'd think that would open a clear opportunity for Jefferson to play more in the box, allowing both himself and Earl Thomas to play their "natural" roles. I doubt we see that happen, though.

Yea, Wink loves disguise too much for that to happen. We'll see Earl around the LOS and Tony deep, as scary as that is. I guess we can't judge Wink too harsh, as he did put together a championship caliber defense last year. It is unsettling though.

But last year we had no centerfielder. Weddle and Jefferson were basically clones of each other, except Weddle is much more intelligent in-game than Jefferson (which isn't a slight on Jefferson, Weddle is one of the smartest players in the entire NFL). This year we have a clear centerfielder and a clear box safety. Will Wink use them as such? Time will tell.

Either way at least we upgraded from Weddle. On top of that big highlight Pick 6 he had yesterday, Earl Thomas also pulled down two Sacks according to reports. So even in a different role, he's still super talented lol.
