Camden Hood Rats

Offense
To start the year we kick off against BDP and his Intimidators. They bring a formidable defense to this game, but with a few key matchups we feel like we can start them off with a loss this season. With Cam and Lamar suited up, we can run an offense full of wrinkles that confuse and slow down the opponent no matter who is back there. Here are some of the ways we want to do that. As in any offense, we want our playmakers as involved as possible all game. Even with Ramsey on Hopkins, we won't ever shy away from targeting him.
RPO's to slow down that rush- Carolina has a good DL, with Bosa being the most feared player along that line. To keep them from pinning their ears back and rushing as hard as possible, we've installed tons of RPO's to force those DE's to have to think for a moment before reacting to anything. This should also serve to freeze the safeties and LB's for moments at a time to enable our pass catchers to wiggle open. With this being a staple in the offense, we have no problem swapping Cam and Lamar from time to time and taking advantage of both players dual threat ability.

Keep the pace fast- With a fast paced offense, we can get to the 2nd stringers of Carolina's defensive line more often than usual, and they aren't very impressive IMO. The RPO's will help in one aspect to wear them down, but staying at a quick pace will allow us to grind on these guys, opening up holes for Michel and Montgomery, but also giving Cam and Lamar time and lanes to work with in the passing game.

'Big slot' formations- With a players like Evan Engram and Walker on the team, we want to get them out in space as much as possible. At times, we'll put both on the field, and flex one out into the slot (Engram more often than not) to force Carolina to make a decision. Cover him with a LB (TJ Watt would be an easy target) and have a disadvantage from a speed aspect, or put a smaller DB on him and risk being out muscled on a pass play.

Taking deep shots- With the RPO a focal point in the passing game, as we mentioned before, we think we can take advantage of players pausing for a split second and getting beat. With Hopkins and Dede working the intermediate part of the field, we want to feature Courtland Sutton more downfield. As a rookie playing with a weak armed QB last year, Sutton was still able to manage almost 17 YPC thanks to his ability to get down the field and use his big body and high point skills to make plays. We won't forget him in this game especially if covered by the shorter Alexander.

Defense (cover 2 nickel base)
BDP brings an offense as potent as any into the matchup, so the contest will be won and lost in forcing the Intimidators to play small ball all game. Here are the basics of the defense and some things we'll try to get this offense out of sync.

Cover 2 base w/press- With Carolina having two stud WR's who can get down the field and cause damage, we're going to employ a cover 2 shell. Normally in a cover 2 there's a small potential for a 'seam buster' TE to give you problems up the middle, but Carolina has failed to field a legitimate threat at that position so we feel comfortable making that a tertiary worry of ours. This way we can focus our do-it-all safeties on making sure neither of Evans or Beckham can break off anything of significance deep down the field. As often as possible, Ward will be on Beckham and Bouye/Williams will be on Evans. Bouye will kick into role he's familiar with in the slot if Carolina goes 3 wide.

Get to Rivers w/varied rush- With our CB's pressing, our safeties deep over the top we'll need to get after the QB. Carolina has a very good offensive line, one that may rival our defensive line. So in this game, stunts, LB blitzes, safety blitzes and corner blitzes at key times will be important for us. With Darius Leonard showing how good he was at timing blitzes last year, he's going to be crucial in keeping Carolina on their toes. Sweat will rotate in, Chandler Jones can kick inside from time to time to maximize rush as well.

Kamara stopper- No one can follow Kamara alone all game long, so we've got to employ a series of Kamara stoppers in this game. Between 6 players (Leonard, Byard, Adams, Maddox, Hooker and Elliott) we feel we can keep a strong rotation of athletic/versatile players in the game for when Kamara is in the backfield. 3 safety sets (taking Todd Davis or Jewell out) are going to be very important in this game. We take pride in having an entire arsenal of safeties who can do it all, and being able to rotate those guys to follow Kamara around out of the backfield. He'll make plays, but we want to stop the crushing plays.

Don't let Carolina lean on the run- With a nickel base package, Carolina could opt to go run heavy early to try to push us around. Luckily for us, our front 4 is stout against the run as is, and our LB's and safeties are physical players that we are willing to gamble can handle the rotation of Carolina RB's.
