Portland Horned Owls

Motivation: It's week 6 of the BDL season and the injuries have hit our team hard, however we'll look to rebound on the road this week against a talented Hungary team and get back to .500 as well as get back in the wildcard hunt.

Portland Offensive Gameplan: Next man up and with our banged up WR corps that forces us to get creative so we'll be imploring a run heavy offense this week to take advantage of our offensive unit's best strength, running the ball and letting McCaffrey carry the offense. We'll start out with a 2 TE base offense but we'll obviously use 3 wide and other offensive formations throughout the game.

Formations: Shotgun, I-Form, 3 wide, 4 wide, 2 TE, 3 TE etc. We'll use a variety of formations. | Scheme:  Pass 45% to run 55%

The Passing Game:

Patrick Mahomes will start at QB for us and will be tasked with picking apart the defense and finding the opportunities to make plays against a talented Hungary team. Jones takes over the no.1 WR spot with Adams out again, he'll command the most targets in the passing game since we feel he's capable of beating any CB Hungary has. Mike Williams will line up as our no.2 WR and will command a few looks in the redzone as well as be used as Mahomes's big body target on key 3rd downs. McCaffrey will obviously be a focal point of the passing game this week as he should command 30+ touches in this game including double digit targets in this one, we like our match ups against Hungary's LBs and DBs for him. KeeSean Johnson and Pharoh Cooper will be used as WRs when needed.

Peyton Barber will be used as McCaffrey's relief option to keep him fresh, still expect McCaffrey to play 90% of the snaps and line up out wide on occasion. We'll use more 2 TE sets as well to help in the running game and rest our WRs on occasion, Will Dissly will also be used a lot more this week since we feel he has established himself as a solid TE. Expect a decent amount of play action since we feel Hungary will be expecting us to feed the ball to McCaffrey in this one.

Hungary has a pretty good defense all round, but we feel our O-line is up to the task and should be able to win their match ups in the trenches and let us establish the running game as well as keep Mahomes protected. Mahomes will adjust protection and audible as needed to take advantage of Hungary's defense, expect him to use his legs a bit more in this one so he can buy time for our weapons to get open as well as look to McCaffrey as the check-down option.

The Running Game:

McCaffrey will of course be the workhorse back in this but expect a 85:15-ish split so he can remain fresh throughout the game Barber and company will mix in to run the ball, as for our running style this game we'll be focused on attacking Wichita's edge's and running outside a lot in this one we'll obviously run between the tackles as well but our focus is on attacking the edge and getting McCaffrey in space.

While BDL D-lineman are capable of playing 100% of the snaps Wichita only has 1-2 d-lineman on the bench the past few weeks to rotate in so we expect we'll eventually wear them down due to the limited amount of bench players to rotate in.

The Blocking Unit:

We'll execute the blocking assignments as necessary. In a pinch Ben Jones will plays C/G, Beachum plays OT etc.

TDLR;

Control the trenches, Win against Defenders, make plays in key situations, no penalties, long drives via running the ball, execute our assignments, finish in the redzone, score points, capitalize on turnovers, win the TOP battle, control the clock, win on 3rd down etc.

Portland Defensive Gameplan:

Cover 1 man, Cover 3 zone with the focus of keeping Hungary's passing game in check. Dominate the LOS and control the game from there, we expect our d-line to win and get after Goff who is fairly weak to pressure.

Formations:  4-3 [Base Defense] / 4-2-5 [Nickel] along with other various formations that depend on down&distance&situation| Scheme: 40% man to 60% Zone coverage, Cover 1, Cover 3, Cover 2 etc.

Pass Coverage:

Our defense is far from full strength but we should be able to handle a Hungary offense lacking any elite healthy weapons, we'll mostly be playing zone similarly to the last few weeks along with mixing in some man.

Desmond Trufant is out this week and that sucks sure he hasn't been great this year but he's still a good no.1 CB,  Logan Ryan will step up as the no.1 CB and will cover the right side in zone he'll also pick up Hilton in man coverage. Eli Apple will hopefully be shiny this week and not be rotten, he'll cover the left side in zone as well as cover Fitzgerald since we feel he's Goff's version of Kupp in this offense he will also follow Fitzgerald into the slot. Alexander will man the 3rd CB spot and the slot again this week, Alexander is a functional CB so he should be able to handle his assignment.  Reshad Jones is finally playing up to his talent level, he will make adjustments to the coverage if need be as well as be tasked with being the deep FS. Malcolm Jenkins will be tasked with being the SS who plays whatever role is allotted to him depending on the coverage, Jenkins will also occasionally cover Olsen in obvious passing situations.

There is no denying Hungary has good stable of RBs even if none of them could catch a cold in the winter if they stood buck naked in the middle of a frozen lake, still they're all solid runners especially Fournette. Pretty sure Hungary will look to go run heavy given the nature of their offense the previous two weeks. Hungary's TEs are pretty solid especially with Olsen who despite having one foot is doing pretty well for himself at his age, Hungary's supplementary WRs aren't fear inducing but they're solid bodies.

In dime packages Blake Martinez remains on the field, he will also be the defensive signal caller for this game and make adjustments if needed, we'll also use more run defense heavy packages when possible to help defend against Hungary.

Front Seven/Run Defense:

We trust our front seven to be able to control the running lanes and the LOS in this game, with some defenders on IR Linval Joseph adds some reinforcements to help Pierce and our d-line to handle the run game.  There are some tweaks to the d-line this week with Ford starting for Matthews who is hurt this week, he'll be used more often as a pass rusher as well as rotate with Beasly. Our front seven should be able to handle Hungary's offensive line, as well as free up our LBs to make the plays they need to change the tide of the game.

Their RBs are pretty talented but they're no threat in the passing game at all so we're not worried about that aspect of them so instead we'll be focused on limiting the running game and forcing Goff to beat us through the air. Javon Brown draws the start at WLB and has quickly proven himself to be one of the Titan's best young LBs, we'll get after the QB as well but we won't be blitzing often but we will play disciplined football and stay in our lanes. We'll rotate our DL+LBs+DBs etc as necessary to keep them fresh and change personnel for coverages/schemes/situations as needed.

The Pass Rush:

Goff isn't exactly skittish but he has been known to be shaky when confronted with a good pass rush so we hope to take advantage of that by getting after him early and often. Vic Beasly will be used as a blitzing LB on occasion and will rotate in with Mercilus+Ford+ on occasion as well to keep them fresh.

TDLR; Play good defense, control the LOS, dominate the running lanes, force turnovers, get after the QB, don't blitz often, contain Hungary and the running game, play smart football, mind the down&distance etc.

Offense -
This week we will be rolling with a balanced RPO offense. To keep Mahomes and McCaffrey off the field, we will look to have long sustained drives by utilizing the running game to eat up clock.

With Portland's pass rush taking some hits due to injuries this week, Goff will have some time in the pocket to make smart decisions. Using the RPO, the offensiveline does not have a tell. It splits between pass and run blocking looks to confuse the front seven of Portland's defense. This delays the reaction of the defense (or they try to guess) of this it makes the defense very susceptible to the play action especially with a balance run/pass offense. With the passing game how this benefits is it will help our booming receiving group to get open. The Hilton, Fitzgerald and Metcalf will be running a number of routes throughout the game. Routes go to short (to run clock), medium and long especially when the CBs bite on the run. Look for Metcalf and Hilton especially on streaks if their corners cannot sustain coverage. Fournette and Olsen will be used in safety valve roles underneath, and occassionally Mostert will add a speed element to the backfield to test Portland's sideline to sideline looks in the passing game.

One asset our interior O-Line has is that Marpet, Glasgow and Dahl are all quality run blockers. This week when playing the meat wall of Portland we will look to take advantage of our o-line to open holes both in the middle against Pierce and Joseph as well as on the edge especially with Olsen setting up the edge blocks against some edge players that are susceptible to the running game. Fournette (60%) Brown (20%) and Mostert (20%) will take up the majority of the carries. Look for some end-around runs as well to take advantage of our speed elements on offense.

Defense:
Portland is down to only having four receivers. Marvin Jones, Mike Williams, Keesean Johnson and Pharoh Cooper as John Ross went to IR this week and Davonte Adams continues to be sidelined due to injury.

Because of the injuries to Portland's offense, we have two goals this week on defense. 1. Pressure Mahomes. 2. Stop the running game. To do both of these, we will be deploying a 3 safety look this week.

Mahomes has been an incredibly mobile QB but he sustained a leg injury last week. As a result he could not throw on the run and part of his game failed because of it. Thus this week we will be looking to pressure Mahomes into making mistakes and to make him inaccurate as he has been the past couple of weeks. To do this in addition to our four man d-line, we will send some additional pressure from Kuechly, McMillan, Smith, Chung, or Peppers on any given play. We want to confuse Mahomes on where the additional pressure is coming from throughout the game to constantly make him unsteady as the game progresses.

For coverage assignments this week it will depend on what offensive base they decide to come out in with their injured personnel.

In all sets:
Melvin will be on Jones. Talib will be on Mike Williams. Kuechly will have Dissley. McMillan and Peppers will have McCaffrey. Smith will play

In 2 TE:
Chung will cover the second TE.
Smith is deep zone shaded towards Jones as he is the deep threat.

In three wide:
Chung plays deep, Smith covers the nickel.

In four wide, McMillan comes off for Kirkpatrick.

Run defense:

By having a three safety look you have the makings of a 4-4 look with two safeties playing up at LBing level with Chung and Peppers. Both excel in run defense and will make it difficult for McCaffrey to find open space to run. In three wide it moves Smith closer to the line instead which is a deadly asset if McCaffrey tries to run to the edge. On D-Line we are deploying our own meatwall. All 4 DTs we have rotating this week excel in run defense. We will look to take away the inside run and stuff McCaffrey behind the line.

After watching Kirkpatrick get shredded and get hurt, not so sure about that.

Kirkpatrick got shredded? Guy gave up one catch today before getting injured. He wasn't even the one with coverage responsibility on Andrews when he messed up his knee. That was blown LB coverage. Shredded my *** lol

Hungary wins this one. I’ve been vocal about not being a fan of their WR group before they brought in TY. I think they take advantage of the Portland corners when they have the opportunities. The three safety defense combined with those linebackers can slow down McCaffrey. Dissly will win some battles (he is healthy for this one) but I don’t see the speed element from Portland to challenge Hungary deep. I think Hungary is well prepared for this one. Mike Williams might beat Kirkpatrick on some plays and McCaffrey will still get his but it won’t be enough to beat Hungary. 24-14 Hungary.

Hungary take this one.  A depleted and very shaky group for Mahomes to throw to, coupled with McCaffery having another no show performance will lead to Portland's offense not being able to keep up with the scoring from Hungary.  Once down they won't be able to move the ball effectively brought to mount a comeback.

28-14 Hunagey Hippos
