On the flip side, Portland came up short in a do or die clash which ended their season and now have nothing to play for. Offense: As usual run game will be the focus. With Michael Pierce and Linval Joseph out, Portland have only one healthy defensive tackle on their roster. Da’Quan Jones normally plays about 60% of the snaps in a game and he’ll be asked to play all of them, and without another interior defender next to him. We’re going to exploit this and run it up the middle often, as many as 50 times if we can keep the ball rolling with Elliott getting 35 carries and Singletary 15. This will feed into a heavy play action which will let Allen roll out and use his legs to throw on the run and hit any of our receivers who should be able to do a job against a weakened Portland D. Defense: We anticipate that Portland will come out with 3 wide and 1 TE. In this instance we have the following assignments in our usual Cover 1: Gilmore – Adams Harris Jr – Williams Fuller – Jones Hyde – McCaffery Clinton-Dix – Sample (or JC Jackson taking the 4th WR) Johnson will generally sit in the underneath zone looking to hit any of Portland’s receivers running slants/crossing routes. Savage will sit up top as the single high safety. As with the defensive line, we don’t plan to do anything out of the ordinary yet again. We’ll rotate quite often, with Simmons and Hankins generally coming on earlier downs and Campbell kicking to DE to bulk up our run D. Allen will also rotate with Alexander Johnson on occasion and serve as a 5th rusher on certain plays, or drop into the same zone.
