NYRaider
The fights are officially canceled. Apparently California, who still has legal authority over criminal matters on Indian land, was considering stepping in as it violates the shelter in place order. But ultimately Disney and ESPN executives pulled the plug and told Dana that they wouldn't broadcast the event.

BayRaider
Disney owns ESPN (which I didn’t know) and Disney told ESPN to tell UFC to tell Dana to stand down on having UFC 249. Heard this on SiriusXM. I hated Disney already, and now even more so. They play it more safe than any company ever. Even the new Star Wars had zero new ideas and just “safe” and horrible. With or without Disney this event was never going to happen - there was a zero percent chance this event took place and just about everyone knew it.
JonStark
So why was it ok for Wrestlemania to go on but not 249? I didn't hear any outrage towards the WWE.

The main thing would be that wrestling is not a sanctioned event and they own their own rights. So what was somebody going to do/say?

For one McMahon own his company so no one can tell him that he can't broadcast an event. But more importantly Wrestlemania was filmed on March 25-26 in Florida before the state had issued shelter in place.

California is currently in shelter in place. The UFC was essentially renting a tribe, which is against the law, to host the event. The Governor said he didn't support it and the California State Athletic Commission said that they didn't support it either. The state of California still has legal authority on Indian land even if it contradicts Indian law. There were reports that they state was going to step in and stop it anyway. No but why would that matter? It’s still two athletes “competing” by disregarding social distancing in an event that takes a decent amount of people to produce. One being real and one being fake, or one being taped and one live, shouldn’t matter right now. Point I’m trying to make is that had the UFC went their own way like the WWE did instead of jumping into bed with ESPN, we would still have fights next week. And all the people saying it’s unsafe better feel the same way about WWE who are currently putting on shows.

No they wouldn't - it's still a commissioned sport and no commission was going to sanction any UFC event.
