Not a move I would have made. Ultimately, likely to be harmless.... Maybe. That first year cap hit is a weird choice.

Yeah, it's really 2 years, 10 million. I don't see it, with interesting options in the draft to replace the snaps either as second tight ends, permanent slot guys, or as fullbacks, but Shanahan likes bigger personnel groups and Juice has been a part of our best ypa lineups over the past couple of years due to his versatility and the just bad other options that replaced him on the field when he sat. I'm just sad that Kyle Pitts seems to have no chance. This fo/staff likes their guys and sets up for them. If Williams and Varrett are next, I'd bet everything in the world that they are going to pick their favorite edge rusher. I don't know who that is - Paye, Ojulari, Oweh, Phillips, and Perkins are the guys that fit, with Paye being regarded the highest by consensus and fitting the least well into Dee Ford's shoes. If not, it's any of the three big boundary corner types.

I’m going to be very disappointed if we draft Paye. I just don’t see it with him.

I'm not sure if I'd take pitts, but I will say he's in my top 5 of this draft

Meh...

This probably says it all. I will never agree with this, especially in this cap year, but it's kind of pointless to get super upset about it as they have to have other plans in place to work around it

There really isn't much to see as a pass rusher - Michigan seems to do little or no real work on pass rushing technique that I can see. He doesn't have a plan, doesn't attack the outside hand, doesn't really have counter moves. He's just an absurd athlete. He is, however, incredibly high motor and does use impeccable run defense technique. Saw the dude 2 gapping and throwing guys around regularly to make stops like a 3-4 5 tech. Absolutely killed zone read games. He's applied himself to what the coaching staff teaches. But the pass rush is all projection. He would not be my choice either - you are drafting edge early because it is more certain than corner and saves you more money against the cap because top edge rushers are paid above the scale for top corners. I don't think Paye's giving you a ton of value on that rookie deal as a pass rusher. I'd much rather have Ojulari or Perkins after a trade down who do have plans when rushing the passer, do use their hands well, and do have countermoves (Perkins has no right to be as good at speed to power as he is, but there you are). Ojulari especially isn't great against the run, but we need a pass rush specialist that kicks Armistead inside and puts a top on the pocket rather than an all rounder. Bosa is the all rounder. Armistead will get a lot of edge snaps against heavy personnel.

If this how our free agency is going to kickoff, I might as well start drinking now. AND I DON'T DRINK so there's that...

It's kind of stupid that this was the first resigning, though it seems like they were doing everyone at the same time. I'm thinking Trent and JV come soon

High floor guy imo. Uncertain ceiling as a pass rusher. I considered having him out of my first round, but ultimately given the positional value, it felt weirder not having a single first round pass rusher for me lol

Wish I could like this twice

I mean I like Juice and the dyamic he brings. The versatility he gives the offense. But you don't pay a FB 5 mil when you've got limited cap and alot of work to do to shore up the DBs. Not to mention addressing LT. Its a luxury that we just couldn't afford this off-season. I feel like they're going to overpay for a guy like Verrett now so I'm trying to get my angst out the way so I won't be as pissed.

Yep. I wasn't joking when I said he was about 25% of our net cap right now. Insanity. They have to have a plan. I'm assuming dee ford restructure, but they have to wait until 4/1 for that

How will his restructure work? And how will that impact releasing him after next season?
