You think ACL injuries are career enders? At least for RBs?

@VikeManDan Latavius Murray isn't a free agent after this season. We have him for 2 more years at the conclusion of this season.

This article may ease your mind:

“The energy of the injury equals one-half of mass times velocity squared,” Mandelbaum said. “So the higher, bigger, faster injuries, the more energy translates to more tissue damage. All those variables are directly related to everything from how quickly you get back to how much needs to get fixed, to the amount of consequent arthritis that occurs down the road.”

Given that Cook’s tear came without contact — which about 70 percent of ACL tears do, Mandelbaum said — there’d seem to be a good chance he’ll have a smooth rehab and be able to return to a big role next year.

There has been no shortage of heroes on the Minnesota Vikings’ roster during their eight-game winning streak, but one player who has seemingly flown under the radar is running back Latavius Murray. After a slow start to the season, the 2015 Pro Bowler has been one of the NFL’s top running backs. Over the past six games, he’s averaged 79 yards per game at 4.5 yards per carry and scored five touchdowns. The only running backs with more yards during that time are Mark Ingram, Le’Veon Bell and LeSean McCoy. Only Ingram and teammate Alvin Kamara have more touchdowns since Week 7.

While the Vikings’ offensive line has played a huge role in the success of the Vikings’ running game, Murray has been tough to take down when defenders get a hand on him. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound back ranks third in the NFL in yards after contact over his last six contests. He’s been effective as a home run hitter and a ground-and-pound finisher. Murray has picked up runs of at least 30 yards in three straight games. He’s also averaging 5.1 yards per carry when the Vikings have been ahead in games.

In the first eight games of the season, Vikings running back Latavius Murray had 78 carries for 249 yards, an average of 3.2 yards per carry. Since the Vikings’ Week Nine bye, Murray has 68 carries for 323 yards, an average of 4.8 yards per carry. So why has Murray been so much more effective after the bye? Murray said this morning on PFT Live that it was the bye itself, which gave him fresh legs.

Murray:  “Taking some time to sit back and let the body heal, take some time away, regather, regroup and hit the ground running after that bye week. Getting some time off, some time away, some time to rest. Guys are taking care of their bodies, guys are being smart about what they’re doing, taking care of their bodies to be available on Sundays.”

Sounds like he'd be in favor of a first round bye as well! :D

The injuries to Cook and Sankey were bummers...and I'm surprised that we didn't go after Asiata.

Asiata was done as an effective runner 2 years ago.  They kept him 1 year too long as far as I was concerned.

Good news.

Also, Cook is from South Florida. They are bred differently down there. See Frank Gore,  Willis Mcgahee, and a few others for proof.

Yeah, but he knew the system and would have been an easy call up. Speed dial.

Probably not the best option and generally teams don't hold onto RBs for very long, but he was an option..

Asiata was never a good player. He had one decent skill set: he could pass protect, which is something Peterson and McKinnon were both awful at. McKinnon appears to have gotten better this year but i wouldn't say it's a stength.

Yes, it's for 2 additional seasons, but I can't see them carrying a backup RB for $6M next year.

How much is Cook making? They could spend a little more on the backup with the starter being on a rookie contact.  They mighr decide that the money could be better used elsewhere, but this year is showing how valuable it is to have a good backup

He'll make $1.5M next year, but I think they may have to put more money to the QB position, so they'll have to control costs elsewhere...
