Dunlap is an often mentioned possibility. Things heated up.

In 2020 he went to Seattle and started at OLB. Last season he was pass rush specialist, starting only two games and still posting 8.5 sacks. His time in Cincinnati was as LDE including two Pro-Bowl nods playing next to Geno Atkins. Early in his career, the Bengals went to five playoff games then 2020 in Seattle, losing all six. Watching the Bengals go to the SB has got to chafe.

Fun point from Chiefs Twitter I wasn't aware of, Dunlap is amazing at batting down passes at the line. Like, better than Chris Jones, even. Averages about 8 batted passes per year over the last 6 seasons. Had more passes defensed last year than Mathieu did lol.

Best off-season ever.   I wanted him over Clowney and Ingram after the initial FA waves were over.    I can’t fault a single move made this off-season, and 5-6 new players that I would have banged the table for.

This is a very good signing. If he matches what he did last year, he's honestly quite a bit better than our recent vet mercenaries at DE (Ingram, Suggs, Okafor.)

Exactly, though not better than Ogbah. I still wish we had re-signed him.

Robert Quinn was my first preference, but this will do very well.

One nice thing is that Dunlap is a true DE not a bulked up LB. We can slide Karlaftis to DT in the nickel sets and not worry about setting the edge. If he wasn't so freaking fast, I could see Chenal in a similar role.

Update: Some reactions to the Dunlap signing.

The point is fairly made that Melvin Ingram didn't have a choice. He was traded so he had to come. There is a school of thought that he did not want to be here and was never going to re-sign. Dunlap turned down other offers to come here.

Dunlap is also much more of a Spagnuolo type player--long and lean. Ingram wasn't.

Dunlap is a very huge get because it gives us a legitimate threat as a pass rusher in the outside and the ability to rotate players without having a giant drop in production potential.  It also gives a strong veteran presence for guys like GK and Chenal.  Not that we didn’t have Jones and Clark, but Clark is t exactly the role model I want for these young guys.

Dunlap played about 40% of the snaps last year. My guess is Danna/GK will be opposite Clark and then bring Dunlap on passing downs

That's one possibility. Another is that a rotation develops.

One thing that was clear last season is that Clark was called upon to play too many snaps. He started hurt, got healthy, but then wore down. Having four legit DE to rotate would be a big plus.

Sort of related, who will give Chris Jones some help inside? We expected it from Reed last season but he never developed any push. Is Wharton going to step up? Spags has often used DE inside. Another thought is a 3-3-5 set where either Gay or Chenal is keyed to rush.

One other thing to remember is that Dunlap and Clark have played together for whatever that may be worth.

A lot of the "experts" said GK could kick inside but I'm not sure if he has the bulk to fit there in the NFL, even just occasionally. I could see him just get washed out but that's why I don't work for any NFL team lol.

Seems the most logical but I'd rather not have an opposite Chris Jones going outside effect.

Actually they missed each other in Seattle by a year or 2

That's something Spagnuolo has consistently done. In pass rush situations, bulk is less important than in running situations.

You're right. Dunlap started in Cincinnati and moved to Seattle rather than the other way around.
