Cowboys "likely" to release WR Amari Cooper at start of league year

In a piece of poetic justice, he should get traded to the Texans for like a fourth rounder, Texans pick up David Johnson on a 1yr-deal and throw him in the trade. Now with an heir-apparent locked and loaded the Cowboys are able to move on from Zeke after this year.

^^^ That seems extremely far fetched and roughly ~50% of what Gallup should be paid. But, in the far fetched reality where this actually happens, it completely justifies cutting Cooper.

I could maybe see 5 years with $30M just being the guaranteed money. Literally zero chance that's the full deal though. If it is, Gallup should fire his agent immediately. $6M per year is the going rate right now for rookie first rounders and like, one year deals for injury prone vets. Nelson Agholor, Curtis Samuel, and Corey Davis all got over $11M. No way Gallup is anything under $10M/year.

If Gallup accepts that something is wrong with him.

If his value is THAT low, then he needs to take a 1 year deal and get back to the market or 2 years max.

Michael Gallup is already 26 years old and now coming off of a serious knee injury (ACL).

Amari Cooper: 27 years old.

517 Receptions.

7,076 Receiving Yards.

63.2% Catch Rate Percentage.

46 TDs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Michael Gallup: 26 years old.
193 Receptions.
2,902 Receiving Yards.
55.5% Catch Rate Percentage.
15 TDs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Dallas WR core just downgraded because Michael Gallup isn't an upgrade).

Your NFL career production is what sets your future FA NFL contracts.

And let's be real here.

Michael Gallup is already 26 years old and has never been too productive. And now he's coming off of a serious ACL knee injury.

No one was going to pay him big time $$$$ to begin with; so if he receives pennies on the dollar? It's more than understandable (given his age, lack of NFL production + blown knee).

He had 1107 yards in 2019. That’s a lot more than top 5 TE Dalton Schultz had last year with Gallup missing half the season.

He's also had years of 445 receiving yards, 507 receiving yards and 843 receiving yards.

No team would be stupid enough to pay him any type of big time FA $$$.

I’m not saying they should. I’d give him a one year deal to prove he can return to form from the ACL.  I was questioning “never been too productive.” You can’t hold the 507 against him if you don’t hold Schultz’s first two years against him though.

The comp for him could easily be courtland Sutton

Sutton:

50 games- 175 / 2658 / 15.2 / 12 tds / 1 acl / 15 million per year

Gallup

55 games- 193 / 2902 / 15.0 / 15 tds / 1 acl

Even their peak seasons are bizarrely similar:

Sutton - 72 / 1112 / 6

Gallup - 66 / 1107 / 6 (Gallup had two fewer games)

Sutton is 5 months older

 honestly cant say I have watched enough of Sutton to know if thats a great comp. I am clueless.

But what I can say, is Gallup was asked to run a 9 route pretty much as a broken record. In 2019 I was breaking down the all 22 and we (meaning Cowboys) have never had a WR that we asked to run the "hard" routes as much as Gallup. It was all Go/post/corner with the rare curl or slant.

He was never put in a position were catching 75% of the passes was reality.

Well then Denver made a big mistake paying Cortland Sutton that much money coming off of an ACL injury of 2020.

Because his production of 2021 last year resembles nothing of a $15M type of WR and his Receiver Rating of 78.4 is atrocious in comparison to his 2019 Receiver Rating of 96.5 (before his 2020 ACL.

Denver made a big mistake and all teams should learn from it.
