Forgot that London was sandwiched in there.

He was mostly forgettable.

To his credit, he raised a lot of good men and had good graduation rates. He just couldn't recruit all that well, and was horrible at Xs and Os. Which is kind of the point of the head coach.

Due to Virginia being bad for a length of time, and VT being a middling team.  In the end, we get to the same place.

Yep.

It also didn't help that Groh decided to forgo recruiting in state for major targets outside of Virginia. He was able to get them early on (flash the Super Bowl ring and that attracted a bunch of players), but then he was an ahole and not that good (except for either 2005 or 2006 (don't care to look up which one) when he went 9-5, which got him another contract).

From a couple things I read years back. A few HS coaches in the Hampton Roads area disliked him so much that they wouldnt even allow UVA reps to the school. And would preach to their players how they shouldnt have any involvement with him.

Yep and basically gifted the whole SE Virginia region to VT. Who knew that was going to be a problem? #eyeroll

TL;DR summary: I got bored and reacted to an off-the-cuff statement with WAY more detail than I should have culminating in a multiple hour analysis of what a bunch of other teams' regret levels were for passing on Russell Wilson.

And everyone passed on him twice! Unbelievable

Not everyone. The following teams only had one pick before pick #75

  • Arizona
    • Pick: #13 = WR Michael Floyd
    • Reason: traded their second round pick (#51) the previous offseason to Philadelphia in exchange for Kevin Kolb. Oh yeah, they threw in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie into the deal to get it done.
    • Comments: Given that the finished the 2012 season with Ryan Lindley and John Skelton starting (and Kolb on IR), they probably wish that had not made that deal.
    • Regret Level: 9 cleats to the groin (out of 10)
  • Atlanta
    • Pick: #55 = OC Peter Konz
    • Reason: traded their 2012 first round pick in the 2011 draft to Cleveland in order to draft Julio Jones.
    • Comments: They were probably less upset since they had (and still have) Matt Ryan. Probably wish that Ryan had the same level of success that Wilson has had though.
    • Regret Level: 4 cleats to the groin
  • Dallas
    • Pick #6 = CB Morris Claiborne
    • Reason: traded up from 14th to 6th to get Claiborne, giving up #45 in the process
    • Comments: In 2011, Tony Romo had a passer rating of 102.5 good for 4th in the NFL and second all time in Dallas history. They weren't concerned about what the future held for the 31 year old QB, who would have three solid seasons before having his career effectively ended by a broken back.
    • Regret Level: 4 cleats to the groin, and two of those were due to the Claiborne trade.

Then there were the teams that didn't even have a pick before #75 (really!)

  • New Orleans
    • Reason: traded up in 2011 from #56 and their 2012 first round pick to New England to draft Mark Ingram; their second round pick was forfeited due to the bounty scandal
    • Comments: Kind of hard to draft a guy when you never get the chance. Drew Brees smooths a lot of wounds, though. Losing their 2012 first (which ended up in Cincinnati's hands after New England traded it to the Bengals to move up to take Chandler Jones) hurts somewhat, but Mark Ingram wasn't bad, but wasn't worth the price they paid. Still, they wouldn't have looked at Wilson. Not sure they could have predicted the bounty scandal from blowing up on them
    • Regret Level: 1 cleat to the groin
  • Oakland
    • Reason: traded their 1st round pick (#17) and their 2013 2nd to Cincinnati for Carson Palmer midway through the 2011 season; in 2011, traded their 2011 7th along with their 2012 2nd for New England's 3rd and 4th round picks.
    • Comments: So, they had just traded for Carson Palmer and sacrificed their 2012 second round pick to grab Joseph Barksdale and Taiwan Jones in 2011. Palmer would be traded to Arizona less than a year later. Barksdale would be released four months later before the 2012 season. Jones, a RB, was moved to corner in 2013 before being moved back to RB in 2015. In six years, he would end up with 44 carries for 183 yards, 17 catches on 21 targets for 240 yards and 1 touchdown, and 45 tackles (38 solo) and 1 tackle for loss. "No ragrets" huh?
    • Regret Level: oh ... yeah ... 10 cleats to the groin

Of course, some teams passed on him more than twice.

  • Buffalo
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #10 = CB Stephon Gilmore, #41 = OT Cordy Glenn, #69 = WR TJ Graham
    • Comments: The Bills went into the 2012 season with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tarvaris Jackson, and Tyler Thigpen. Given that the Bills signed a big extension halfway through the 2011 season, it was likely they couldn't get away from Fitzmagic. They probably massively regret that mistake, especially since they cut him after the 2012 season.
    • Regret Level: 8 cleats to the groin
  • Cincinnati
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #17 = CB Dre Kirkpatrick, #27 = G Kevin Zeitler, #53 = DT Devon Still)
    • Comments: This was the second season of the Red Rifle (Andy Dalton), so I don't see how they could get away from Jackson, as much as they might have liked to in retrospect. In all likelihood, Marvin Lewis would have ruined Russell Wilson.
    • Regret Level: 5 cleats to the groin
  • Cleveland
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #3 = RB Trent Richardson, #22 = QB Brandon Weeden, #37 = OT Mitchell Schwartz
    • Comments: Ooof.
    • Regret Level: 11 cleats to the groin (yes, out of ten)
  • Denver
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #36 = DT Derek Wolfe, #57 = QB Brock Osweiler, #67 = RB Ronnie Hillman
    • Comments: They had just signed Peyton Manning to a five year contract. Given that he would take them two Super Bowls and win one, I'm sure they were okay with it. Of course, that loss was due to Russell Wilson's Seahawks so that stings a bit.
    • Regret Level: 2 cleats to the groin
  • Indianapolis
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #1 = Andrew Luck, #34 = TE Coby Fleener, #64 = TE Dwayne Allen
    • Comments: Given that Luck had been considered the best prospect since Peyton Manning, I don't think the Colts gave Russell Wilson a single thought. Again, like Atlanta, they would have rather seen Wilson's success replicated in their guy. Of course, if they perhaps protected him better (or really at all) so he wouldn't have retired on them as early as he did, he might have had some.
    • Regret Level: 4 cleats to the groin, all for ruining the best prospect since Peyton Manning
  • Jacksonville
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #5 = Justin Blackmon, #38 = DE Andre Branch, #70 = P Bryan Anger
    • Comments: They had drafted Blaine Gabbert the year before, but even going into the draft, there were major questions about Gabbert. His rookie season did nothing to stop those questions. Still, kind of hard to give up on a first round QB after their rookie season. However, when you draft a punter five picks before a two time Super Bowl winning QB? That's going to leave a mark. Oh, and Gabbert would only start 13 more games across two years for Jacksonville. Yikes. I suspect only Cleveland fans have a harder time looking at this draft amongst the "more than two" crowd.
    • Regret Level: 10 cleats to the groin
  • Kansas City
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #11 = Dontari Poe, #44 =  OG Jeff Allen, #74 = Donald Stephenson
    • Comments: You ever wonder what it is like to be the guy drafted right before a Super Bowl winning QB? I mean, if you are Donald Stephenson, the one thing you can say is "I was drafted before Russell Wilson!" I mean, your 80 games and 37 career starts (and multiple drug suspensions) ain't going to get it done. Poe was a Pro Bowler with Kansas City so that wasn't so bad. Still, when your season was going to helmed by Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn, and Ricky Stanzi, you are probably wondering a lot about that #74 pick. Especially when all three men were gone by the start of the 2013 season. Still, that decision led to Romeo Crennel's firing and replacing him with Andy Reid. So they have that going for them. Reid and Wilson would have been a VERY interesting combo.
    • Regret Level: 8 cleats to the groin, only Poe and Reid saving them from getting the full monty
  • Miami
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #6 = QB Ryan Tannehill, #42 = OT Jonathan Martin, #72 Olivier Vernon
    • Comments: On the plus side, two of the three guys that the Dolphins drafted ahead of Wilson ended up in the Pro Bowl. On the down side, they did it for other teams (Tannehill for Tennessee in 2019, Vernon for the Giants in 2016). Oh yeah, then there was the whole Jonathan Martin bully fiasco.
    • Regret Level: 10 cleats to the groin
  • Minnesota
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #4 = OT Matt Kalil, #29 = S Harrison Smith, #66 = CB Josh Robinson
    • Comments: Huh, Kalil made the Pro Bowl as a rookie because Trent got hurt in that bar fight in 2012 (forgot about that). Other than that, he was meh at best in Minnesota and an outright disaster in Carolina. Harrison Smith has been a mainstay as a Pro Bowl player. Also, the Vikings drafted Christian Ponder in the first the previous year. While he had a meh rookie season, it came with some upside hope. That turned into an mirage. Again, there's the question of whether Leslie Frazier would have been able to do anything with Russell Wilson.
    • Regret Level: 8 cleats to the groin
  • New England
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #21 = DE Chandler Jones, #25 = LB Dont'a Hightower, #48 = S Tavon Wilson
    • Comments: Jones would have more success in Arizona, but was a solid contributor to New England. Prior to opting out of this season, Hightower has been a mainstay of New England's defense his entire career. Oh yeah, they had some random kid named Tim Broody or something at quarterback. I wonder how that turned out.
    • Regret Level: 0 cleats to the groin
  • Philadelphia
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #12 = DT Fletcher Cox, #46 = LB Mychal Kendricks, #59 DE = Vinny Curry
    • Comments: So, again, this is a "what could have been" moment. The Eagles had Michael Vick, whose 2011 season was more in line statistically with his career stats unlike his crazy 2010 season. They had Andy Reid. Do you think Eagles' fans would trade either Kendricks or Curry for Wilson and keeping Reid? I honestly don't know about that one. I think they were done with Andy by that point, and winning the Super Bowl in 2018 probably calms the nerves. But ... what if? Thankfully, we'll never know
    • Regret Level: 6 cleats to the groin
  • San Diego
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #18 = LB Melvin Ingram, #49 = DT Kendall Reyes, #73 = S Brandon Taylor
    • Comments: On one hand, they had Philip Rivers. On the other hand, they never even made it to a Super Bowl with Rivers. However, I wonder if Wilson would have had as much success with the Chargers' continual offensive line woes.
    • Regret Level: 5 cleats to the groin
  • St. Louis
    • Number of times passed: 5
    • Instead drafted: #14 = DT Michael Brockers, #33 = WR Brian Quick, #39 = CB Janoris Jenkins, #50 = Isaiah Pead, #65 = CB Trumaine Johnson
    • Comments: Had Sam Bradford. He was looking up. They had just ripped off Washington. Things were looking up. Problem: they had Jeff Fisher as the head coach and an owner in Stan Kroenke who was plotting to move the team back to LA. So, lots of wasted opportunities and didn't know that their QB would only start 23 more games for the rest of his career with the Rams. I shudder to think of what Jeff Fisher would have done to Russell Wilson.
    • Regret Level: pales in comparison to the move back to LA as well as suffering though the Fisher era
  • Tampa Bay
    • Number of times passed: 3
    • Instead drafted: #7 = S Mark Barron, #31 = RB Doug Martin, #58 = Lavonte David
    • Comments: I used to work with a Bucs fan. He swore up and down that Josh Freeman was the real deal and just needed that bit more of support. Yeah, he got Martin, but would start one more season before being released shortly into the 2013 season.
    • Regret Level: 8 cleats to the groin

This is a problem for college football. I hope they can get this under control and have a season, but I’m still concerned they won’t be able to finish it especially bc in a month we’ll be dealing with flu season on top of COVID-19.

Freakin hurricanes making it double rough down there. Getting supplies, getting to shelters, fueling up in lines, stagnant waters, blood sucking mosquitoes bouncing person to person. Then for players. Running home to check on family members and all else.

Because of all the coastal teams. They should have prepared to start after hurricane season.

That’s a good idea, starring in October would’ve been better.

Didn't even think about hurricane season.  That would have been a smart idea.
