If it has more to do with the “cast of characters” then why not keep Fields, build an O-line, and get a receiver opposite of DJ who can get open and catch the ball? All of this and continue to build the defense.

This is clearly a good option. But to write off drafting a QB with the top pick that posses better accuracy and has a better contract than Fields is a mistake. MHJ isn't a sure thing just as much as the QB's in the draft are not a sure thing. From what I've watched of MHJ is that he lacks speed

I wouldn't say the Bears have no leverage. They still have the 5th year option for  the 2025 season and can do a franchise tag for the 2026 season. I've made my preferences clear what I would try to do but even if they keep the same core the Bears aren't at Fields' mercy by any means.

I mean if that doesn't count for Fields then it wouldn't count for any rookie the Bears could potentially draft this year.

By all accounts Fields' agent is as cutthroat as they come, and highly unlikely to do anything but maximize the dollars for his client.  I've heard this a couple places but one that comes to mind was Josh Lucas (worked Bears under Pace) on Hoge and Jahns so inclined to believe it.

Gotta give it to the Bears though; just when we thought they were committed to making the same mistakes (draft new QB with coach that should have been let go a year prior) they go and might just invent a new, higher form of that mistake.  Keep said coach, draft new QB,  keep SAME OLD QB.   That would be truly impressive as I'm not sure a team has ever stretched our their window to find out if their QB is good or not to that lengths.  I guess maybe Cutler lived in that twilight of "is he good and we're bad around him?" for a while but damn.

To carry the theme forward:

We keep Flus, keep Fields,  Draft Willaims,  bring back Trestman as OC, Kromer as QB coach, Mel Tucker as nominal DC, Ted Phillips as performance consultant, Chris Conte as end-of-half specialist DB coach, Virgnia becomes strength and conditioning coordinator, and **** it let's say Ditka as diversity and inclusion assistant.

MHJ isn’t the only WR in this draft. I also agree that maybe starting over with a QB who has potential to be a better option isn’t a terrible idea. Contracts are contracts though. They can figure that out and that shouldn’t determine whether or not they keep Fields or draft Williams/ Maye.

And Alan Williams comes back to be the director of Human Resources.

If we pick Williams/Maye with the top pick and take a receiver at 9 than thats 3-4 years of cost-controlled QB play likely winning the same amount of games that Fields will be winning if he were the QB.

That’s probably not the case if Fields is the 4000 yard passer with 40 combined TDs that your hypothetical called for.

What do you think Caleb Williams record/stats would be next season with DJ Moore and another 1st round pick receiver

I have no idea, but if your expectations are that he’ll go for 4000 yards and 40 combined TDs ans a rookie your expectations probably aren’t realistic. That’s literally never happened before.

I bet he runs 4.43 or better

As a rookie, Prescott started all 16 games with 3,667 passing yards, 282 rushing yards, 29 total touchdowns, and only four interceptions, and his 67.8% completion percentage ranked fourth among NFL quarterbacks in 2016.

I think thats a pretty close comp. albeit at the time the Cowboys had a top o-line and running game

So less yards and 11 less TDs? And that’s the closest comp? The fact that that’s the closest comp (and still way short) also suggests that what Dak did as a rookie was an extreme outlier, doesn’t it?

Likely: 3000 yards, 25 TDs, 15 INTs or in the neighborhood

BUT only if he can get a full 3.5 seconds in the pocket

Your right, he'll run sub 4.5. But you know what I'm saying his gets his yards with route-running, agility, and leaping ability. Tremendous catch radius and has soft hands. We could take him #1 but it wouldn't be the ideal spot. It's just risky to trade down for a guy like that because if another team takes him your screwed

Sounds about right, 500 less yards and 11 or so fewer TDs is the only thing you lose when starting a rookie QB day 1 over Justin Fields entering year 4. How many games did Fields win us this season wins above replacement? I cant say its more than 1 maybeee 2

You can take Mahomes stats from year 2 (his first season as a starter) and divide everything by 2 and that would still be better than Justin Fields this year. I don't think its unreasonable to believe a rookie QB can preform well in year 1 when surrounded by some decent players
