The coaches suck, but the rosters have been flawed. They have had some elite players at certain spots, but lack depth which is one reason why everything goes to hell if one of the "stars" is out. AJ Smith was an ***hole, but his teams had much better depth which is why they got to the playoffs much more often than Telesco's teams.

Are the chargers cutting, Mike, Bosa, Mack and Keenan? They’re in cap hell rn. All those guys are making over 20 Mil.

We had Dodds sitting right there man....

And Champ Kelly.

Let's recap Telesco's era even more than @Teen Girl Squad

Biggest draft hit relative to value:   Keenan Allen (give him that one)

Big star picks:  Joey Bosa,  Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater - here's the thing - they were the default pick where the Chargers were.

Big trade:   Khalil Mack (give that to him, but again that's more on CHI dumping Mack than Telesco actively looking for value)

Here's the thing - during the peak Philip Rivers years when Telesco was GM, and the last 4 seasons with Justin Herbert - the Chargers were this great O, meh D team every year - that you could push around, beat with the run game, and couldn't get off the field.   And each year, Telesco literally did nothing to address run D on the front 7, each year he'd prioritize CB, maybe the odd RB/WR extra choice.     And yes, he's the one hiring these god awful game manager HC's (Anthony Lynn, lol) or guys who wore out their welcome (Staley).

I'm truly shocked a division rival would even think of Telesco as GM.

If the Chargers get Harbaugh as HC, they double-gain by upgrading HC and not having Telesco as the GM who can't build a balanced roster.....now triple gain by Telesco joining the Raiders as GM.

What on earth was Mark Davis thinking....

Mike is gone, Keenan probably gets extended to get some relief. They will have to choose between Mack and Bosa.

Bingo. As I said the other day, his teams were generally built like some of those Colt teams with Peyton he helped build with Polian. Physical teams always gave them problems. The playoff game against New England in 2018 is a textbook example and that was the best team he assembled during his 10 year run here.

To add on another fun fact, the Chargers have not signed a single day 3 pick to a second contract during his 11 year tenure. Thats impressively bad. Meanwhile the team sharing the building and upstate on the i5 seemingly can't stop drafting studs in the later rounds.

Edit: Even a bigger fun fact. Telesco has only signed 4 players after the first round to a second deal. They were Keenan Allen, Tre Pipkins, Denzel Perryman, and Easton Stick. Literally two non-replacement level players.

Even more to your point:

Loaded roster my ***.    He had the good fortune to have generational talent drop into his lap 3x in R1 and he did hit on Keenan Allen / Khalil Mack trade.    But he’s a massive reason they underachieved.

I am floored the Raiders passed on Champ Kelly and Ed Dodds for this guy.

Raiders are so screwed long term. Hired a motivator HC and a GM who consistently handed out some of the worst contracts we have seen. Brutal.

Davis definitely over-corrected from his previous hires. Probably a decent bit of bargain bin shopping as well to help smooth out the payroll for a few years. Best case for them is that Pierce is a hidden gem and that they can get a few great first rounders out of Telesco before getting a real GM.

At least we have nice unis and a state of the art stadium for other teams to win Super Bowls in.

Man, Mark Davis....

That's just bizarre.

Would this have something to do with other GM candidates not wanting Pierce forced on them? I wouldn't think so since AP seems really well liked across the league.

It has nothing to do with AP. Mark Davis didn't want a rookie HC with a rookie GM.
