Raiders sign QB Gardner Minshew (2 years, $25M, $15M gtd)

Should have gone with Minshew instead of the nonsense Jimmy G experiment last year.

Fine with this as a bridge. A "bridge to what" is probably the real question here, but there's no denying he's better than O'Connell.

$15M guaranteed does not put you out of ANY potential QB to bring in lol. Fields is cheap, a rookie is not much more expensive, they're not out on anything because of $7.5M in real money per year.

Good for Minshew, finally makes a decent lil pay day and should end his career having made $70-80M and started quite a few games, not bad for where he was taken and what was expected, but this doesn't preclude the Raiders from making other moves at all.

Yeah this won't stop us from getting our QBOTF, nor should it. I was totally fine with AOC as our #2 behind/in front of a high pick. But I can totally get behind Gardner.

But...the Colts didn't make the playoffs?

The colts made the playoffs.

Three years ago.

Big oof.

Solid signing for the raiders and gives them flexibility and allows them to go BPA while giving Pierce *something* if AOC bombs.

Was hoping the Vikings could sign him as their stop gap QB but it is what it is.

It does feel like the Vikings are the team that has kind of been left without a chair here.  In terms of a surefire "immediate starter".  Obviously still have the draft and there are still some potential trade targets out there who are "starter ready" right now.  But in terms of FA stopgaps...Tannehill is a big yikes who looks like he's fallen off a cliff.  What else is there?  Try Dobbs again?  Yuck.  Drew Lock?  Ooof.  Basically have to find a guy in trade like Fields, Howell, Danny Dimes lol?  Do the Raiders move AOC now, when they land somebody else in the draft?  Does anybody else have a spare QB available that they're not using?

Otherwise...you're putting immense pressure on that drafted QB to start right away.  Which may work out fine, but it also might not.  You don't really want to be in that situation.  Especially if you're not holding the top pick with a bluechip guy sitting there.  Also worse...it puts immense pressure on you to make sure you actually do land one of the handful of QBs in the draft.  That can lead to desperation and paying through the nose to make sure it happens.  Which isn't great.

I guess the draft has some "fallback" worst case options like Nix and Penix, who due to their age+experience, could reasonably be expected to start early.  But i'm not sure how thrilled Vikings fans would be with that outcome.
