I feel the pieces are there for a solid top 10-12 defense.  My preference would be to find a new DC to see what this group can do under new leadership and guidance.  Unfortunately, I do not have a specific name in mind, not overly excited about the current "in house" options, but at this point, anyone but Capers is a starting point for me.

DL has 2 solid players and a few other younger pieces that could be rotational guys.  I would like to get another interior pass rusher, but the other needs will too big.

ILB are great in Martinez and adequate in Ryan, but another backup might be needed with Joe Thomas having been injured and limited in 2017

EDGE.....HUGE NEED.  Both in depth and front line starter.  Clay is a FA after 2018 and there is nothing behind him as of now.

Secondary:  I think there needs to be another boundary corner for sure and possibly another late round addition.  Just have to have more depth in todays NFL and given the bad luck of injuries that GB seems destined to sustain.

Draft needs:  EDGE x2, boundary CB, ILB, DL (pass rusher specialist)

First of all, none of the "talent" matters if Capers is the one coordinating the talent.

Second, I agree the D could be better immediately if the existing talent just received better coaching.

Third, I agree EDGE is both a huge and the biggest need, just as it was last offseason when Ted failed to fill that need.

Fourth, I think you overrate the ILBers. I have always been a Martinez fan, but he will never be great. Above average sure, but not great. And Ryan is a huge liability in the passing game and lacks speed. We need someone with speed to complement Martinez and that someone is not Joe Thomas.

Fifth, agree another CB is needed in addition to King and Randall.

Sixth, Safety, which was supposed to be a strength heading into the season, is a complete unknown heading into 2018 between Burnett's age & contract, Jones' regression, and HHCD's who know what.

Seventh, the D really needs a difference maker,  preferably at OLB or CB.

That is a lot of defensive needs and question marks.

Hire a new DC ASAP and get the front office to work.

I kind of see Edge like I see WR

Which $10 million Edge are you gonna sit assuming we are successful drafting one ?

And no - neither will take kindly to sitting on every third down or passing situation

Well I dont think its ever happened where CM3 and Perry were healthy together for a season let alone 3 games

Is that really the fear? Who to bench?

I don't even know who is good on defense tbh. Even our 'good' players seem like JAG. Our defense is always reeling, never attacking like you see the top defenses do.

Also can someone explain how Haha went from an exciting player to looking like he is too slow to cover tight ends?

I don't know either.  This bend but don't break reactionary defensive philosophy just isn't working and it hasn't in a while.   Unless changes are made on that side of the ball this offseason I'm all for wholesale changes in this coaching staff after 2018.  This is when Ted's and Mike's contracts are up.

I agree with most said but I feel like to make the jump to a top 10-15 defense we cant just rely on a 1st round rookie to come in and be a great pass rusher. Just sucks that the market isnt there for a good starting pass rusher.

Yes, if we want to make an upgrade there we'll have to draft one.  Teams hang onto their good pass rushers so they rarely hit the open market and if they do they are super expensive.

We just need pass rush to get us over the hump, these good quaterbacks have too much time to pass against us man. Fackrell can't do it. Biegel is only a rookie and missed a huge chunk of the season, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. We just really need a guy that will come off the bench and get after it. Also more interior pass rush wouldn't hurt.

I feel that we neglected that position for far too long and it is coming back to bite us big time.   You aren't gonna find a lot of good EDGE guys in the later rounds.  The good ones go early and often.  :(

Pass rushers are not divas.  If Perry or Matthews were asked to be situational, they might even prefer it.

We've seen plenty of times this year how much different Clay plays when he's had rest between plays.  Clay gets more sacks in 2018 the less snaps he plays.  Fact.

Having 3 capable pass rushers still means each get 65-70% of the defensive snaps.  Goes up if you have Clay plying some inside.

Agreed. Clay is and will be overpaid next season but they really need to hold onto him because they just don't have much at OLB right now. Clay becoming a situational rusher could improve his overall production. Just gotta find a new young stud starter in the draft and likely draft another one in the later rds for depth

This topic is useless until Capers and TT are gone. Until then the defense is going to look 95% the same personnel wise with maybe an added rookie or two, and be the same dysfunctional unit under Capers that we've seen for years. You want to fix the defense? Change the people who can't seem to put it together right despite years of opportunity.

It's not my fear - but a reality - in some way shape or form - yea

Don't want to get benched, play better. Nobody on house is going yeah but if we draft a good pass rusher we'll have to bench someone! Who cares...

At the very least Capers. Time to go all out and get a top tier talent on the EDGE. A new DC and a stud pass rusher and the D will be ready to go. Re-sign Burnett as well.

Who though... Who is top tier that will come available? I don't see it.
