With the loss today, and the now slim chance of a playoff berth, wanted to take a look at the players under contract for the 2018 season.

Used spotrac for the info and things are housed here in a google doc https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TtMpTiHJONrARjc3ouAagd7fOKEG-C2zZXvso3FUDG0/edit?usp=sharing

I feel the pieces are there for a solid top 10-12 defense.  My preference would be to find a new DC to see what this group can do under new leadership and guidance.  Unfortunately, I do not have a specific name in mind, not overly excited about the current "in house" options, but at this point, anyone but Capers is a starting point for me.

DL has 2 solid players and a few other younger pieces that could be rotational guys.  I would like to get another interior pass rusher, but the other needs will too big.

ILB are great in Martinez and adequate in Ryan, but another backup might be needed with Joe Thomas having been injured and limited in 2017

EDGE.....HUGE NEED.  Both in depth and front line starter.  Clay is a FA after 2018 and there is nothing behind him as of now.

Secondary:  I think there needs to be another boundary corner for sure and possibly another late round addition.  Just have to have more depth in todays NFL and given the bad luck of injuries that GB seems destined to sustain.

Draft needs:  EDGE x2, boundary CB, ILB, DL (pass rusher specialist)

I dont even know who is good on defense tbh. Even our 'good' players seem like JAG. Our defense is always reeling, never attacking like you see the top defenses do.

Also can someone explain how Haha went from an exciting player to looking like he is too slow to cover tight ends?

I hear this "the pieces being there for a top 10 unit" hypothetical every year but until I see it outside of a one or two week spell I'm just not buying it. If we can cut one of Cobb/Clay/Jordy and replace one of those contracts with a high level edge rusher on a market value contract however, I may sing a different tune.

Our biggest need is a scheme for these guys to execute. Beyond that, pass rush, pass rush, pass rush.

We have 4 safeties I really think are good football players, I like King and Randall and Hawkins is a serviceable depth guy, I really like our DL and ILBs. Just leaves EDGE. We need a LOT of help there.

However I feel like a DC looks at this job, with what's on the roster and this incoming EDGE class and has to like what he sees.

I think you have a pretty good foundation of players to build from.  Of the players under contract for 2018

Perry - Daniels -  Clark -  Matthews

Ryan -  Martinez

King - Clinton  Dix -  Randall - Jones

That is a pretty good group, it certainly needs some pieces and there are some that could be resigned that would add to it in Burnett and House.

Not going to disagree with you, but I do see potential with the players already under contract.....WITH A NEW DC.

I feel at this point, the risk/reward of a DC change is worth taking to maximize on the abilities that are there.

Agreed.  I would not mind a EDGE/pass rusher from the first 2 picks and another later on in the draft.  For as much as Cullen Jenkins was a weakness against the run, he know how to get after the QB from the inside.  Would be nice to have someone like that.  Daniels and Clark offer it, but there just needs to be more pressure on the QB and whether it is from the EDGE or interior is somewhat irrelevant.

I agree with most said but I feel like to make the jump to a top 10-15 defense we cant just rely on a 1st round rookie to come in and be a great pass rusher. Just sucks that the market isnt there for a good starting pass rusher.

There's none out there...it's like Lawrence then nothing, I can't see them not tagging him, worst case.

We just need pass rush to get us over the hump, these good quaterbacks have too much time to pass against us man. Fackrell can't do it. Biegel is only a rookie and missed a huge chunk of the season, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. We just really need a guy that will come off the bench and get after it. Also more interior pass rush wouldn't hurt.
