Whenever someone wants to complain about Kwesi, just show them this, and be glad your favorite team’s GM isn’t Terry

yeah, what was the Atlanta GM concerned about? that the Bears would trade up to 8 and then trade again with someone else, and that team would take Penix?

and now this...

In conjunction with the release of the new league documentary NFL Draft: The Pick Is In, we’ve gotten a behind the scenes look at some negotiations between the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Rams that came when the Jets were on the clock at #10 overall.

The video shows that the Rams offered the Jets their first-round pick at #19 overall as well as their second round pick at #52. The Jets’ front office ponders things for a bit and then decides to place a call to Minnesota, giving Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and company the opportunity to offer the deal that the Jets ultimately took for the Vikings to move up one spot. Apparently, the Jets decided that moving all the way down to #19 was too large a drop to take.

Now, I don’t know for sure if McCarthy was the Rams’ target in their quest to trade up, but I do know that’s who the Vikings wound up taking at #10. McCarthy was the fifth quarterback off the board in the first ten picks, and the Denver Broncos then took Bo Nix at #12. The next quarterback wasn’t taken until somewhere in the 170s, so had the Vikings not managed to make that deal they may have been forced to either settle for Nix or not take a quarterback of any real value at all in the 2024 NFL Draft. If McCarthy was the object of the Rams’ trade up attempts, that is.

While the Jets were on the clock, Rams coach Sean McVay separately called Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell to confirm he wouldn’t be inclined to trade back if O’Connell’s guy (J.J. McCarthy) was there. (It’s possible that the Vikings made the move from No. 11 to No. 10 because O’Connell became concerned by McVay’s call that the Rams were thinking about jumping the Vikings in order to get McCarthy.)

After the Jets traded down to No. 11 with the Vikings, the Rams tried again to move up. Snead offered No. 19, 52, and a third-round pick (No. 99) for No. 11 and No. 185, in round six. Douglas declined.

The Rams kept trying, until the Raiders took tight end Brock Bowers with the 13th pick. (The Rams offered the 19th pick and the 52nd pick for No. 13 and No. 112 to Las Vegas. The Raiders stayed put.)

It became clear from the context that the Rams wanted Bowers. After the Raiders took Bowers, the Rams became focused on a potential Aaron Donald replacement, in the form of Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy.

That didn’t last long, because Murphy went just three picks later. And coach Sean McVay correctly sensed that No. 16 — Seattle — was the floor for Murphy.

The Rams ultimately remained at No. 19 and took Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse. And while they were happy about it (because what else would they say?), the peek inside the draft room makes it clear that they wanted Bowers first and then Murphy, before settling for Verse.

a good example of... "why didn't my team get aggressive and trade up? the bums!"

it's not just about your own willingness to trade UP, you have to find someone willing to trade DOWN.

So, KAM could have stayed at 11 and still taken McCarthy?

Oh well.  At least he got his guy. As long as that works out it's all roses. If it doesn't, well at least he took his shot. It's better to go down swinging than to never swing at all.

it's really unknown. could another team have traded up to the Jets' #10, besides LA?

all we know is LA tried, NYJ passed, then called the Vikings to let them know interest in trading had occurred. then the Vikes took their shot.

And, I don’t believe, we know who the Rams were targeting at 10. It’s presumed that they were after Brock Bowers because they kept calling teams until he was taken by the Raiders. But I don’t believe any of the GMs, or coaches on those videos gave out any names during their phone calls.

The gamesmanship between the GMs is the fascinating part of the video.

Imagine if the Rams had traded up to 10 and taken McCarthy, and then this video comes out with the Rams calling the Vikings, telling them that they are trying to get Bowers just to get Minnesota to stop competing for the Jets pick.

The Broncos — mainly Sean Payton — claimed they drove up the price of Minnesota’s trade with the Jets, but it appears the Rams were the team vying for the pick.

Consider it shocking that Payton attempted to irritate the Vikings but with little punch behind his nonsense.

good point. in learning a few days ago it was McVay and the Rams talking with the Jets at 10 and trying to make a trade deal, nothing has ever come out that Denver was talking to the Jets too.

as @SteelKing728 would say... it's confirming what we already know - a lot of Sean Payton is just hot air.

That man doesn't have one redeeming quality. He is a puke human and an overrated puke of a coach. 5 losing seasons with prime Drew Brees and no playoff success outside of Bounty Gate... I don't think that is a coincidence.

I'm going to enjoy watching him flame out in Denver, but feel bad for their fans.

Really looking forward to seeing him crash and burn in Denver
