Cancun

We are excited to be playing the Raleigh Firebirds this week. We do not like or respect this team. No team in the league talks more undeserved **** than Raleigh, which has yet to even reach .500 under its current ownership. We intend to use this week to show them what a contender looks like and just how far away they are from being one.

Offense:

We are going to play a mix of 12, 21, and 11 personnel this week, with a small amount of 4 WR between the 20s as well. Behind our top two receivers, we’re going to work our other four active receivers into a rotation, with Olave typically moving to the slot on the opposite side of the field from Metcalf. Iosivas will typically be the third receiver in the redzone. The backs will likewise rotate, with Aaron Jones getting heavy run on passing downs while Taylor and Stevenson eat up most of the other carries. We expect to throw a LOT this week, but our run game focus will be on testing the edges of the defense on stretch and toss plays to further force the ends to play contain instead of getting upfield. We will also give Mahomes some pass-run options out of the 11 and 21 formations, with the run portion being a QB keeper to keep the linebackers and safeties honest.

The cornerback depth chart for this team is, to put it simply, brutal. We expect to see Kendall Fuller on DK Metcalf, which is a matchup we want to target relentlessly. All Fuller does is give up touchdowns as a boundary corner, being credited with up to 9 TDs allowed last year and infamously getting moved to safety with the Chiefs once upon a time. Simply put, we don’t believe he’s anywhere close to capable of handling Metcalf one-on-one, and we’ll be pushing the ball down the field to him on post routes and deep crossers all day. Mahomes will be very patient waiting for Metcalf to blow past the safety to his side if Raleigh lines up in Cover-2, and if we see more Cover-1, we’ll rotate to target Olave left one-on-one on the other side and Henry over the middle.

Olave vs either Marcus Jones or Byron Murphy is likewise a heavy mismatch in our favor, and we’ll be running the whole route tree with him featuring lots of double moves to either pop Olave free for a big play downfield or force the CB to back off and allow easy yardage underneath. Hunter Henry will eat up targets over the middle, using him as a chain mover when the defense has the deep portions of the field covered.

Up front, we’re leaving Robert Hunt on an island while Andre James helps out Zion Johnson. Zion is having an excellent start to the season particularly as a run blocker and we trust him to get the job done this week as we give Dotson some time to get healthy. With 12 and 21, we want to keep the second tight end or one of the backs in to help chip the right-side edge rusher. We have two great tackles, but we want to be very aggressive throwing downfield this week and that requires making sure Mahomes has plenty of time to throw. We’re not worried at all about Raleigh’s coverage holding up, so having one less player out on a route doesn’t bother us.

We intend to put the pressure on Raleigh by scoring early and often, forcing their tepid offense to try and keep pace, which I’m sure will not go poorly at all with Matthew Stafford at the helm.

Defense:

This week, we get Raleigh, led by fearless leader @EaglesPeteC, five time consecutive BDL Offseason Champ.

We anticipate a heavier dose of 3 WR look, and will go into a base nickel package as per usual. Stat Padford is off to a rough start this season, but we know that he's capable of slinging the ball around, and Jordan Mason is a very capable RB himself. Rookie sensation Marvin Harrison Junior had a great Week 2, and the left side of their OL is stout. Typically, we believe in maintaining gap integrity throughout the game and limiting creases in the run game, but with Stafford being a true pocket passer, we will be mixing up a lot of DL stunts and utilizing a RUSHMAN type package, with KT and Dorance Armstrong splitting 50/50 on early downs and then Armstrong kicking inside as an interior rusher (KT, Armstrong, Allen, Rousseau). We will also use SirVocea Dennis getting some time at LB after a strong 11 tackle and 1 sack game in some 2nd/3rd and long situations as a blitzer and sideline to sideline guy, with Jones coming off.

We will switch between an odd and even front to disguise pressure and twists, showing no gap defenders presnap, with a variety of inside/outside pressures:

Play_1A.JPG

We expect a heavier dose of Mason, followed by a playaction style attack, hoping to get the ball to MHJ in the intermediate and downfield, as well as using Quinton Johnson, Courtland Sutton, and Jerry Jeudy in the intermediate and Red Zone areas. The last man on the LOS will be responsible for the RB, ideally Pitre will be towards the RB unless they motion late and flip him to the opposite side of the QB.

To generate pressure with 4 down linemen, we like a lot of loops and twists to overload one side while disguising pressure:

We also like the CLOUD with a robber coverage and sending pressure, with the robber to bracket MHJ:

We also like the ability to use Pitre as more of a Swiss Army Knife in terms of Apex, pushed back, and as a blitzer:

Zone_2.jpg

Above is a Pitre inside pressure, below is a Pitre outside pressure, but "hot rules" apply if the RB goes out for any type of pass in the flats or screen game.

We like a lot of fire zone, coverage rotation, bracketed towards MHJ, and daring someone other than him, Mason, or Stafford to beat us. Our object is to force Stafford to get rid of the ball quickly, eliminate the play-action passing game, and to force a lot of 2nd and 3rd and long situations to best utilize our personnel.

Disclaimer: This game plan will criticize Blue's players. I know that Blue is a sensitive flower and is a special baby boy. I would like it to be known that the things said are in an attempt to win a BDL matchup and not to be a mean girl. The invitation is extended to Blue after the matchup that if he needs to reaffirm that he is a good boy, I am open to holding him and singing to him and giving him all the love and snuggles he needs to make sure he know how much he is loved.

DEFENSE:

Blue’s offense doesn’t get memes.......ok just one

9498ds.jpg

Base formation and coverage: 4-2-5: Two high shell, prevent the big plays

Pressure Rate: Higher pressure, don’t let Mahomes get comfortable attack the right side of the offensive line. Use stunts and twists, to loosen up Hunter and Carter. Hunter lines up over Walker and Carter over a banged up Dotson or his backup. Lots of rotation of Turner in for Alim. Blitz Quincy Williams to create an extra rusher. Blitz Marcus Jones out of the slot occasionally use his speed to create havoc.

3rd and Long formation and substitutions: Turner replaces McNeill and Rodgers comes in for Campbell

Short Yardage Formation and substitutions:4-3 Walker in for Marcus Jones

Focus Players to Stop: Patrick Mahomes, DK Metcalf, Jonathan Taylor

Run Game Philosophy: a high attack style with really strong run stopping LB’s in Williams and Campbell should force Taylor to have to bounce plays and make guys miss early. Blitz LBs to stop the run.

Pass Game Philosophy: Man/Cover 4/Cover 2 with almost exclusively 2 high shell. Cancun’s weapons especially Metcalf and Olave are more big play receivers than ones that can be overly relied on to move the ball down the field slowly. Take away the big play, force check downs and make Cancun move slowly. Funnel the pass game to their TE’s who aren’t a significant threat.

That was a bit different, but also still conveyed the gameplan well. I think it's a close game, and will need to come back. That said, I think Mark Andrews could be the difference maker, making a play or two down the stretch or in the red zone.
