Ivory Coast

Motivation: Beat Raleigh. *Pretend there is a humorous and entertaining introduction section here, include laugh track*

Offense
Primary Formation: 11 personnel (Single Back, Shotgun formations)

Running Game Focus:
After suffering a devastating and predictable loss to Berlin, we go back to the drawing board a little, but don't lose our overall offensive identity. We'll continue to use the 21 personnel formation with Kamara and Gibson primarily together, but with the return of Addison we'll go back to an 11 personnel primarily. We're monitoring William pre-game; if he can't go, Guyton will slide to the LT and Steele will start at RT. We'll have our offensive line focus on double teams inside to open running lanes, and use a balance of inside and outside runs. There will be some misdirections and counters, but we'll mainly let our backs read the running lanes and make their cuts. The run game will also help set up the pass with playaction getting featured more. Terence Steele will be the swing tackle and provide the 6th OL support in goal line situations (Myers if Steele is starting). Myers will step in as the backup for interior positions.
⦁    Use 11 personnel to spread out the box and allow our OL to win matchups
⦁    Use double-teams with our guards to open lanes for backs to cut through
⦁    Take advantage of overpursuit with counters and misdirection
⦁    Use pre-snap motion out the backfield to lighten the box pre-snap, both in 21 and 11 personnel

Passing Game Focus:
With the return of Addison, we'll go back to primarily having three wideouts, and shifting our receivers, TE(s), and HB(s) around with pre-snap motion. We're going to allow Purdy to focus on an efficient short and medium range passing game, allowing our playmaking receivers to create quick separation, and producing yards after catch. We also want the ball out quick to avoid having to hold up too long in pass protection. We will be monitoring the performance of our OL, especially the tackle position. IF WE SEE THAT OUR TACKLES ARE STRUGGLING, WE WILL ADJUST - THERE WILL BE ADDITIONAL BLOCKING SUPPORT, AND WE'LL SHIFT THE LINE AS WELL. Our running game will also help set up the passing game and we'll utilize playaction passes throughout the game. We'll usually have one player taking a deep route to force the defense to maintain their discipline or else be punished. Some routes will be run out of the backfield by our HBs, such as wheel routes, and we'll have a sprinkling of screens too. If we motion Kamara out and see him matched up against a linebacker, we trust Purdy to make the right decision. Ultimately, smart ball control will be our overall offensive focus.
⦁    Use majority of 11 personnel to allow for mismatches with our receivers and other receiving weapons
⦁    Use our receivers YAC ability to take short catches into medium/big gains
⦁    Get the ball out quick to help offset offensive line pass protection, and use sliding protection and additional blockers if needed
⦁    Take advantage of our athletic tight ends and shift them out for mismatch opportunities; also use Kamara and the other backs in a similar fashion coming out of the backfield both pre-snap as well as post-snap
⦁    Throw in some screen plays, both HB and WR variations - get the ball out quick by Purdy
⦁    Against Zone we’ll utilize flood concepts against one side of the field
⦁    Against Man we’ll feature slants, rub routes, and stop-and-go routes
⦁    Use the running game to set up the play-action pass later on.

Defense
Defensive Formation:
The 4-2-5 alignment will be the primary alignment against three receiver sets. Payne and Wyatt will man the middle. Garrett and Mack start on the edges, with rotations to keep them fresh all game long. Bobby Wagner and Jordan Hicks are the off-ball linebackers, with Wagner being the primary linebacker stepping up to the line. Our trio of cornerbacks will be Greg Newsome II, Trevon Diggs, and AJ Terrell. We plan to use Diggs and Terrell as our boundary corners, with Newsome manning the slot and providing him with more playmaking opportunities. When Raleigh goes with 2 receivers or fewer, Newsome will come out, and Edgerrin Cooper will come on to take the weak-side linebacker spot, with Jordan Hicks taking the strong side and Bobby Wagner holding the middle. Whitehead and Dugger will operate at the safety spots, rotating the primary deep safety in cover-1 to avoid tipping anything pre-snap. If and when Raleigh uses 4 receivers, we’ll counter by having Hicks come out and bring in Lassiter as the dime back, and utilize zone defense. If they ever go 5 wide, we’ll play a mixture of zone coverages with 4-1-6 personnel.

Against the Pass:
We're going to stick with the simple concepts, and line up against Raleigh to beat them. Our main pass defense will be cover-2 man-under schemes, with safeties over the top to keep the deep pass defended, and our corners matched up underneath to prevent quick passes and YAC yards. Wagner will take the primary HB and Hicks will cover the TE. From time to time we'll use Cover-1 with Dugger dropping to cover the TE and bringing a LB on a blitz. We'll use some stunt concepts on passing downs (3rd and 7+) but otherwise will maintain gap discipline inside and prevent the QB from having room to step up in the pocket. Our edges will be able to collapse the pocket from the outside, preventing rollouts, bootlegs, and getting to the quarterback. We've got enough defensive line depth as well to keep rotating bodies and constantly attacking their OL with our DL, winning enough matchups to force errant passes.
⦁    Rely mainly on man underneath with keeping usually two but at least one safety over the top
⦁    Collapse interior of the pocket to prevent stepping up and sacking Stafford
⦁    Rotate defensive line to keep constant pressure and force mistakes
⦁    Don't give up the deep pass and wear the offense down
⦁    Trust our edges to pass rush and play contain as needed
⦁    Alternate Mack, Garrett, and Jordan inside on certain passing, as well as third and long packages

Against the Run:
No CMac makes it easier, but we will still need to play smart, efficient football. Our defensive front will be smart, reading the play and flowing to the ball. Our interior defensive line will be helping keep our linebackers clean and flying to the ball, preventing holes from opening up or draw plays from catching us unaware. Our players will focus on securing the tackle while the secondary defenders will try to strip the ball. If additional run support is needed, we can drop a safety into the box to read the play and bait the QB if it ends up being a pass or being closer to support against the run.
⦁    Play smart, fundamental football with secure tackling, but letting secondary defenders try to strip the ball if the opportunity arises
⦁    Trust our defensive line to win matchups
⦁    Edges will contain the outside runs
⦁    One safety to drop down into the box pre-snap if needed
⦁    Defensive interior will keep linebackers clean with gap control and preventing the QB or HBs from slipping through on draws

OFFENSE

Establish the run; do not let Myles Garrett wreck this game. Use motion and move Marvin Harrison Jr around the formation to allow him to be the focal point of the passing game.

Base formation:

12 personnel with Andrews and Knox on the field as much as possible to always be able to help the tackles and support the outside run. The 2nd WR position will be rotating a decent amount. Mooney will get the most snaps to give a speed threat. Johnston and Sutton when we want size, especially in the red zone.

Run/Pass Ratio:

Heavy run to start and then pass to compliment the run. Run to keep it close and the pass to win the game towards the end.

3rd and Long formation and substitutions:

Sutton or Johnston and Mooney for long yardage and a TE leaves the field OR split out Andrews as a WR instead of the extra WR. Lots of motion, to switch between Mooney and MHJ as the slot player.

Short Yardage Formation and substitutions:

13 personnel with Erick All and sub out a WR

Redzone Formation and Substitutions:

Use the Fields package mostly as a decoy to open up the run. Quentin Johnston used heavily in the redzone

Offensive Focus Players:

Jordan Mason, Marvin Harrison Jr, Darnell Mooney

Run Game Philosophy:

Outside stretch runs with counters off of it. Make the IC geriatric LB’s run sideline to sideline instead of attacking downhill. Motion the TE’s to give us numbers in the run game to open up gaps with Knox and Andrews who are both versatile enough to be run blockers and receiving weapons. Make their pass rushers have to be run focused early and slow down the rush. Use our run blocking O-line as a weapon in this game.

Pass Game Philosophy:

Make the defense have to find and adjust to Marvin Harrison each play. Have him switch sides, move into the slot and and motioning him around pre snap. Use mesh concepts to get Marvin Harrison and the speed of Darnell Mooney open in space post sna. Build in RPO slant and screens to the WR’s into the run game as IC starts to come down to respect the run. There will always be a TE to help block Garrett on each and every play or combo block him with two offensive lineman. Garrett will not be the reason we lose. Then pick our spots to play action deep and/or run the downfield routes. Specifically attack Diggs’ proclivity to jump routes with double moves.

Additional Information:

If Smith is out, Fuaga starts at RT

DEFENSE:

Disrupt routes, make Purdy hold on to the ball and have to make second reaction plays. Make Purdy as uncomfortable as possible

Base formation and coverage:

4-2-5: Cover 4 press bail.

Pressure Rate: High pressure.

Dennis Gardeck comes from the waiver wire to the field for us. He has had an impressive start to the season as an OLB/EDGE player for the Cards. Attack the interior duo of Scruggs and Biadiaz with Carter and Turner. Line up Hunter over the rookie Guyton. Use Gardeck and Williams as  box players to mix up pressure and coverage players, so the IC line is confused of who is coming and dropping

3rd and Long formation and substitutions:

LB off, Reid in to cover Kamara

Short Yardage Formation and substitutions:

Campbell on and Jones off

 Focus Players to Stop:

Terry McLaurin, Amon Ra St. Brown, Alvin Kamara

Run Game Philosophy:

Push the middle and make Kamara have to go wider than he wants to hit holes. Slot Blitzes from Gardeck, Jones or Baker buzzing down to blow up outside zone plays

Pass Game Philosophy:

Cover 4, press bail. Disrupt early in the route and then turn and run.

Focus extra attention on St Brown. Keep one of the LB’s in zone in the middle of the field to disrupt crossers or to attack short Kamara dump offs. Use Reid as the box safety to cover Kamara (if he plays) on long yardage.

Additional Information:

If Kamara is out, more focus goes to Addison.

These weapons are getting it done right now with Purdy at the helm. Even with the focus of Raleigh on them I think it’s too much gas in the tank for Raleigh in this one.

What I like:

- Ivory Coast weapons in this bounce back week after their tough Berlin loss.

- Raleigh gameplan to run heavy formations to help their solid pass protectors not let Ivory Coasts' elite pass rush (led by Myles Garrett wreck them.

- Raleigh's INT DL is playing great football and I think they can execute their plan to make Kamara have to run to the outside. So I like the plan there.

What I don't like:

- Tough week from Matt Stafford, which is further hurt by Raleigh having less weapons to work with in this contest.

- While I like the Raleigh gameplan to limit the IC Pass Rush, I think it further limits what this passing offense can do to support the run game (since both of the starting TEs are doing a whole lot of nothing this year.

I liked alot of what Raleigh gameplanned and think they do a good job limiting weaknesses and pushing strengths. But, IC just has a little too much firepower and gets a close win on the road.

but what if your tackles are struggling, what will you do then

I kinda have to echo Scoundrel here, Purdy and those weapons are a huge mismatch with the Raleigh CBs and I don't think they can get enough pressure to make up for it. Sucks that it comes down to something that simple. Also, think it might be time to bench Stafford for Fields, which is not a sentence I thought I would be writing at any point this season or possibly ever.
